Age is just a number, and that is more and more true
when it comes to giving the gift of life.
Earlier this month, a Plymouth woman became
the oldest organ donor in Minnesota at the age of 83.
Maury Glover spoke to her family about why it was so important for her.
Do you remember that picture being taken?
I do.
Yeah?
Long time ago.
Throughout her life,
family members say Mary Jo Grudel was dedicated to helping others.
And even in death, she found a way to continue that passion.
I think it was an extra special blessing.
I think we were all surprised.
Grudel passed away earlier this month after suffering a stroke.
Her family says she was always vocal about wanting
to become an organ donor.
So even though she was 83 years old
and had been a recovering alcoholic for nearly 20 years,
she was able to donate her liver
to a 68-year-old grandmother, saving her life.
It's so sad to lose your parents,
but the fact that she can help someone else is just amazing,
and it's really what she would want.
LifeSource says with her gift of life, Grudel set a record
as the oldest organ donor in Minnesota and the Dakotas.
The Minneapolis-based non-profit that matches donors
with recipients says medical advancements have made age
and certain ailments less of a barrier to donating an organ.
Ultimately, you're never too old to be an organ donor. We want everyone
to register to be an organ donor for that opportunity to exist.
Family members say adjusting
to life without Mary Jo is a work in progress.
But they hope her selfless act inspires others
to check the box on their driver's licenses.
no matter their age if it's aligned it's meant
to be and it's it's a it's a great gift that she was
able to give to somebody else as she left
this world if you'd like more information about how
to become an organ donor we'll add a link to our story
