The broadcast covers the team's physical preparation, the electric fan atmosphere, and local cultural trends, while also featuring a segment on professional pumpkin carving techniques for the Halloween season.
Good morning, everyone, and welcome
on in to Fox Tampa Bay Live on this Wednesday, October 28th.
I am Regina Gonzalez, your host and executive producer,
with you for the next hour as we chug along.
Is anybody else tired? Anybody having that second cup of coffee?
I actually went with the energy drink this morning
because I was up a little late, like most of us,
watching 12 innings of some incredible baseball
and we need to keep that energy going guys that
was amazing with their season on the line
the Tampa Bay Rays rallying in the bottom of the 12th
and Ben Williamson delivering that walk-off four to three the Rays win
and this World Series
is officially staying right here at the Trop
for game five tonight now Milwaukee still leads the
series three to one there's plenty of work left
to do but tampa bay is still in this cue the song
staying alive we're reliving that wild finish
and getting you ready to do it all again uh in just a
few minutes fox 13's walter allen i know he's
been joining you all morning live from the trop we let
our sports team sleep in a little bit
and wally is uh being amazing he's going to join us in just
a sec to look ahead to game five tonight
also with the help of a pitching coach who's worked
with the Rays and he's now working
with the Royals he'll be part of that conversation
plus we're going to hear
from Rays fan Cynthia Wires she joined us during our three o'clock
streaming special she had all her lucky cowbells
and pearls and it must have done something because
boy was this amazing here's actually a live look inside
of Tropicana Field courtesy of Fox Sports
We're going to talk to the fans.
And then Tomahawks are the primetime snack right now.
Did anybody, was anybody up to see this?
This was amazing.
Alex Rodriguez, Big Papi, Derek Jeter,
they all had a little midnight snack.
Thanks to Yandy Diaz,
the Tomahawk steak has truly become the snack of the World Series.
So we're going to have a conversation about that.
Ariel Placencia heading out to a St. Pete market
that is now selling cuts of Tomahawk steak.
So as you can see, we've got plenty of rain coverage ahead.
But as we continue that rain coverage,
as you guys head out to the Trop, head out to
Ferg's, head out to watch parties,
maybe even enjoy a nice drink from your backyard watching
the game.
I know you want to hear all about that weather forecast,
so let's welcome in Jim Weber, our
Fox 13 meteorologist, live from the Weather Center.
Hey, Jim, were you up last night?
How are you feeling?
Tired.
You know, I feel like I've aged a couple of years just by staying up
and watching that nail biter last night.
But you know what?
As long as they're delivering wins,
I will continue to deliver a nice-looking forecast.
We love that.
Yeah.
That's a good trade.
And I think that's why we're extending this on.
All the Milwaukee fans are down here.
They're saying, we can't leave.
This is just too nice down here.
So look outside right now, and it's another day.
just like what we've seen the past several days.
Beautiful blue skies, nice temperatures,
78 degrees. The only thing you notice,
camera bounces around a little bit. It's another
somewhat breezy day, but that's not a big issue
as we head into this evening, looking very nice
as well. We'll continue breezy as we head into the evening hours.
Those temperatures, very nice,
77 degrees, and then only dropping down
into those mid-70s as we go through the evening.
So really a perfect evening to head out and watch yet another game over
in St. Petersburg, 79 degrees right now here in Tampa,
St. Petersburg, you're very pleasant, 76, Clearwater, 78 degrees.
So those winds has been the only issue,
and it's not a big, big deal over here on the West Coast.
On the East Coast, it has been causing a lot of flooding issues,
especially as you head down towards, say,
Fort Lauderdale, down towards Miami.
but we're on that lee side of things
so it's just a land breeze for us but we have this very little
pressure that is passing to our south as it does
so it's been giving us the breezy conditions it's
been giving us a few of these passing showers
so we will continue to see that 10-20% chance of a
couple of showers as we go through the next several days
although our rain chances they
will be heading up as we head towards
the weekend you see up to about a 60% chance we have a front
front, that'll be pushing down across the southeast.
It's not really going to bring us much
in the way of any cooler temperatures,
but it is going to bring us some rain heading
our way as we head into the weekend,
up to that 60% chance, and then we'll start to dry things back out.
But for now, the nice weather continues.
All right, Jim.
Well, thank you so much.
And I love that the weather doesn't necessarily matter
when it comes to baseball games over in St. Pete
because Tropicana Field looking all nice this morning under the dome.
You can see crews working on the turf once again,
getting ready for a game five that I will say yesterday we didn't know
if that was going to happen or not.
But as we look inside of Tropicana Field, we actually want
to head outside of Tropicana Field and technically over to Kansas
because that is where we are being joined by our next guest.
We have FOX 13's Walter Allen outside of the Trop,
And then we're also being joined by Joey Greeny,
a speed and agility trainer who's worked with the Rays,
Royals, and Dodgers organizations.
I know you're with the Royals right now.
Guys, how we doing?
We're good.
We're tired, but we're chugging along.
Wally, I'm going to start with you because I know you were asleep,
as you should have been.
I know you have an early alarm clock, but I mean, I know you've been
talking about the highlights of 12 innings of baseball for a while.
I mean, it was tied.
I was up.
I saw it was going into a 12th inning.
I'm like, oh, I got to go to bed.
But I mean, the bottom of the 12th, that was some magic.
Wally, walk me through those highlights.
Okay, so you got the typical one-run game
as we've had in games one, two, and four.
And, you know, bottom 12.
So this goes into extra innings.
You know, top 12,
Cooper Pratt just sends a missile into the left center stands.
And so a lot of Rays Nation is saying, oh, great, here we go again.
Milwaukee's going to start pouring it on.
Well, we're able to get out of it.
We have three outs to play with in the bottom of the 12.
We've got to get at least one run to tie it to keep it going,
an extra one, two runs,
if we want to end this thing last night.
So that's exactly what we did.
And I think our approach to the plate was fantastic because we had
at least two, if not three, of those hits came with two strikes.
And that's what Milwaukee has been doing to us all series long.
Their ability to hit with two strikes is amazing.
And that's what we did to keep that inning going.
And once you start, you know, getting that pressure,
putting the ball in play, you look at Junior Caminero's,
his scorcher to third, it was a throwing error.
That's what put the first runner on.
And then Junior was eventually advanced to third.
And then we got a base hit that drove him home that tied the game.
And then you have the bases juiced.
Unlikely hero.
Much like we had in 2020 with Brett Phillips.
You have Ben Williamson who comes in.
Not known for his offense per se.
More or less of a defensive guy.
But he gets the ball in play.
He puts the ball on the ground.
And that's exactly what we needed.
He hits that chopper over the first baseman's head.
That's a walk-off.
We walk it off 4-3.
and we force a game five tonight.
What a thrilling way, and what a way to grab some momentum.
You know, we talked to a Rays analyst, Doug Webster,
a little bit earlier this morning, and he said,
if there's a way for the Rays to get back into the series,
they had to have that really emotional moment.
They had to have that, whoa, my goodness,
look at what we did, and we can continue to do it.
And I think hopefully momentum is shifting in our way.
You know, some things are not going our way
in games one, two, three, certainly not in three.
But I think things are starting to turn around for us.
There's a lot of belief in that clubhouse
that we can still do this thing.
Now, we've been saying all morning long yesterday,
nobody's ever come back from a three nothing deficit.
Okay, now it's three one.
And I know somebody who's come back from a deficit three one.
The Cubs did it in 2016.
They were down three to one
and they were able to turn it around
and become World Series champions
for the first time in their franchise history.
So there is still belief there.
I still believe that we can do this thing.
So let's bring in Joey Greeny,
the strength and conditioning coach
for the Kansas City Royals.
You used to work right behind me here,
but now you're in Kansas City, long time no see.
Joey, what'd you see last night?
What'd you like?
Yeah, absolutely, it's amazing.
And everything that the city of Tampa went through
with the hurricane and to see the boys back in action
and on the biggest stage in the World Series is a lot.
And the way they won last night,
Hopefully that gives them some momentum going into this series,
and they can take it back to Milwaukee.
Okay, so if I'm counting correctly, Joey,
I think we played 175 games from your perspective
to keep your guys fresh, loose, and not have muscle pulls and tears
and that sort of thing.
What is it that you can do from a strength
and conditioning perspective?
Yeah, so both teams right now at this point of the season,
they're tired, they're fatigued, and it all goes into the preparation.
that they do weeks and months prior to the season.
And that's what people don't realize is, you know,
these guys start the season in February in spring training,
and they're preparing their bodies from a conditioning standpoint.
They're performing all their running, their tempo runs, their shuttles,
their gassers, their sprint work.
And then they go into the weight room
and they perform all their weight training routines.
And they prepare themselves throughout
the whole season to get to this point.
And it's extremely important to continue to train during the season to,
you know, so that when you get to this point,
your body is naturally going to be fatigued and tired.
But you still have a little bit left that you can draw from,
you know, during these these big games and moments that matter.
I mean, if you were to tell me that Yandy Diaz is still lifting
weights during this World Series, that would not surprise me.
I mean, are people still training?
Are these guys still training while they're in the World Series?
Or they're just, you know, the work has already been done.
Now it's just to go out and play the game.
Yeah, good question.
Yeah, Yandy specifically at this point, I'd probably pretty
much guarantee that he's sitting in the weight room.
He's probably in there right now working out before the game.
So he's one of those guys.
He don't, you know, vary from his routine.
So I wouldn't be surprised if he's in the weight room
and getting his lifts in.
Joey, I want to ask you, because I saw yesterday Junior Caminero,
he actually had to have a
runner sub in for him in that 12th inning.
He was limping.
We're hearing that he may have pulled a muscle.
He jokes that he would play with one leg,
but realistically, what should his morning
look like today?
Is that possible?
Should he be playing?
And that's up to the training staff there,
and they do a tremendous job of preparing
these guys to go out and compete, especially in these games.
But Kevin Cash said last night that he'll go out
and play on one leg if it's up to him.
But it's all hands on deck at this point.
Like I said, these guys, they're fatigued,
they're tired, but they're the best of the
best.
And they're gonna find a way to go out there and play,
even if they're injured or sore
or tired.
So this is what it all comes down to.
This is what they've been dreaming about since they were a little kid.
And we get to watch it all play out here tonight.
exciting. Wally, anything else from the field?
Yeah, my last question to Joey would be as far
as the starting pitcher is concerned,
we still haven't had one named yet for the Rays. We know
we're going to go up against Misuraka
on the other side of things. But if I'm looking at
everything, Freddie Peralta pitched 87 pitches on Monday.
Drew pitched 89 on Saturday. I thought
Drew would go today, but again, it's only on three days rest.
And our friend Doug Wechter reminded me
that he's had three arm surgeries, so he is injury prone.
From a coaching and a strength and conditioning perspective,
how much do you have to kind of make sure
that these guys don't overdo it?
Of course, these guys want to be in there.
Drew, I guarantee wants to pitch tonight,
but you have to kind of keep him on the rails.
Does that make sense?
Yeah, I was wondering how soon again we would see Rasmussen.
I mean, those are the conversations
that are happening right now behind you,
trying to figure out the logistics of the
game and if the game
does tend to go into later
innings tonight, who knows. But those
are all the conversations that are going on now
and they have a pretty good idea
of their game plan at this point
and it's just a matter of going
out and executing the game
plan and
hopefully at the end of the day they push another game
game six and take it back to Milwaukee.
Joey, if you were in that clubhouse
what would you say to this
team right now after forcing this game five lots
of disappointments surrounding monday's game but
i mean we're holding out strong yeah i mean you got
to go one game at a time one inning at a time
one pitch at a time at this point uh from my side
of things from physical preparation just make sure
these guys are hydrated um you know they they
do their preparation routines and they go out there
and compete like i said this is this is it
this is the end of the season they've been preparing
all season long. So now it's just going out and taking care of business.
Absolutely. Well, I got one more question.
Don't do it, Wally. I was just going to say one more, one more.
Absolutely. Before I let you go, Joey,
before I let you go last night in attendance,
Chris Archer, Taj Bradley, who we didn't see on camera,
but he was there. Doug told us
Pete Fairbanks, Tyler Glass.
Now all these former Raiders Rays who are still in the league.
Have you ever seen anything like this,
guys coming back while they're still in the league,
supporting their old team, even though they got traded away?
It's unbelievable.
Yeah, that was great last night to see them in the seats.
You know, once a Ray, always a Ray.
So these guys will come back, supporting their own team.
And like I said, you know, the city has gone through a lot,
especially with the hurricane and rebuilding the trop.
And to have the team in this situation, it's really special.
And it would be great for them to continue this World Series.
It would be great for the city, great
for everyone involved, great organizations.
So, wish them nothing but the best.
Awesome.
I love it.
Gentlemen. Joe, thank you.
Thank you.
Yes, Joey, thank you, Wally.
Thank you for arranging for Joey to come
on here from Kansas City, Missouri.
Not Kansas, that's how tired I am this morning.
Guys, we appreciate you both.
Go Rays, let's rest up and watch some good baseball tonight.
Thank you so much.
Joey, thank you.
See you, buddy.
Bye, guys. See you.
See you. Bye.
Thanks, Walter. Thanks, Joey.
All right, everyone, the coverage continues. When we return,
we are going to bring on a former Rays in-game host.
I don't want to say turn super fan because
she's always been a super fan. She was at game three.
Excuse me, now I'm getting the numbers
mixed up. She was at game three.
Obviously, a very disappointing night for Rays fans,
but she was, of course,
watching very closely yesterday as they stay alive in this series.
So we're going to talk with her about her thoughts when we come back.
All her good luck charms, the lucky pearls, the lucky cowbells.
They clearly worked.
We are continuing to take you
live inside of Tropicana Field
as a forced game five
is happening tonight.
First pitch at 8-0.
Wait, I don't believe we know
who is throwing out the first pitch tonight.
I don't think that information has come out yet.
So just another surprise we can look forward to.
But, I mean, I don't want to call last night a surprise.
I know everybody's energy was a little bit low
because of what happened at game three.
But 12 innings of baseball when we got to the top of the 12th
and I saw the Brewers hit a home run.
I was like, oh, no.
But I stayed up.
And then the Rays came back, baby.
Ben Williamson.
I know Kelly Cowan's actually talking to a former coach of his.
So that'll be a really great conversation.
We're going to try to get that for our special
that is actually happening at 3 o'clock.
So you guys should tune in on Fox Local,
3 o'clock every day that there is a World Series game.
You can bet that you'll find us talking all things Game 5.
Today, we're going to have a bunch of different coverage.
And I should let you know, in that hour,
we are expecting some sound live from manager Kevin Cash,
as well as Chandler Simpson
who's been hitting a lot of walls lately he's been making some
incredible catches
but yesterday on our 3 p.m stream we actually had a very special guest
former in-game host and super race fan known
as Cynthia Sunshine Cynthia Wire up and at them
joining us live once again this time via zoom
because I know everybody had a very late night
Cynthia, my girl, how you doing?
I'm amazing, Regina.
How you doing?
I am good.
We are all a little tired, but in good reason.
So you were here on set,
and I wish I grabbed some of the footage of your ticket.
I know you have your World Series jersey in the back of your shot.
Look at it.
Yep, you got all the stuff, all the good luck charms, and they worked.
You and I sat here less than 24 hours ago talking about needing
to keep the energy up,
needing to keep the vibes going because this team needed it.
And clearly that came through in the final at bats last night.
What was your take me through Cynthia's emotions watching
that game play out?
So at the start of the game, as we talked about yesterday,
the Brewers fans are so dang nice.
So I started my night at Green Bench and saw a lot of them.
And we were just having some good talks about just what
great ball we've been seeing on field, especially from them.
And as we continue, I would cheer as we would get on base.
Every little thing that we did is a win, right?
We stack those up and that'll hopefully get us to the trophy.
And it definitely paid off yesterday.
You saw on that 12th inning extras, I'm freaking out.
I migrated to Ferg's.
I was a little scared to go there at first
because it was so busy, but I love it.
I love the energy of everyone coming out.
Even people that don't watch baseball.
My friend was like, look, we're going.
And I'm like, yes, do you see?
You're having fun.
Baseball, and I think the guys remember that last night.
Baseball is so fun and challenging.
I mean, the fact that it was tied a majority of the game,
I saw it go into a 10th inning and then the 11th inning.
And I'm like, my alarm clock is suffering.
But, I mean, just to watch it until the final at bat,
I mean, I can imagine.
So, Ferg's is right across the street from the Trop.
I know in game three, when we saw a pretty disappointing performance,
a lot of Rays fans were leaving early.
But what was the energy like outside of the Trop after that win?
So we were on the side, one of the side lots watching the game.
I ran immediately to the
main DJ stage for us to have a dance party.
I said DJ already hit that. Play the Bee Gees
because we're staying alive baby and we are.
And it was just such lively energy and people
weren't going anywhere.
I can't remember the time cuz we were just, I was on cloud nine,
you know, having that win and look,
12th inning with my 12 jersey, it worked, man.
I was like, are we allowed to still keep playing music?
But we had such a blast and
everyone was just so hype.
I'd yell out, yeah, yeah, and I'd get yes back and we just kept it
going. I love it, I love it.
I know that you were at game three, but this was a look at just you
You bring in the vibes and I mean,
obviously this was before concerning performance, but
the lucky hot dog key chain,
I know that obviously these world ticket, excuse me, world series
ticket prices are expensive, but I mean,
I think you can definitely speak to the fact
that you do not have to be inside this stadium to bring the energy
and to keep the momentum
going.
Absolutely, it's about who you surround yourself
with and people know that if you
You gotta be around me.
We're gonna be loud.
We're gonna have a great time.
And we're gonna hype up the team with the good and the bad, honestly.
We're just happy to be here.
We're in the World Series.
And I know Brewers fans are feeling the same way.
They're happy to be here.
They haven't been here since the 80s.
And that's why on both sides, we've got just major energy going.
I love it.
And I mean, okay,
walk me through what your thoughts are as of tonight, game five.
We have to win the next three games straight
to clinch a World Series title.
Give me your thoughts.
So yes, we have to win three more to get that title.
But right now we need to focus on what's in front of us.
Yesterday we won a game.
Today we're gonna win a game,
chunk it out one at a time and that's how we get it done.
Only think about today, reflect on yesterday, but keep moving forward.
We said it yesterday, do or die, today again, do or die.
Hit that repeat button, let's keep going
and let's play some freaking baseball.
Let's play some freaking baseball, girl.
The fans, you mentioned so far, I mean,
I can imagine Brewers fans were upset last night.
They thought that they would be celebrating a World Series win.
You mentioned it at the top of the interview,
but I mean, what has it been like watching
this alongside Milwaukee fans, who might I add,
we were just so surprised to see how
how many actually came to Tampa.
Yeah, I've been calling it the wave
of cheese money coming down to the Sunshine State.
They've been so energetic and they're also giving us our kudos.
When we won, they were
like great job. It was good baseball to watch.
Of course, they wanted to see themselves have
the champagne showers, but we live to see another day
and someone's gonna have a shower
at the end of this week. So I think everyone's excited
to see how we're gonna shake it out.
Yeah, I actually, I don't, I wasn't able to get it.
It wasn't technically our video,
but I don't know if you saw it, Cynthia.
There was a video that one of the reporters
covering the game last night caught.
Do you know what I'm talking about?
Them carting the champagne out of the Brewers Clubhouse
because they were like, wait, hold up.
There's not going to be a celebration just yet.
Listen, being behind the magic of baseball on either side,
there's a lot of moving parts.
So, they're prepping the clubhouses,
they're trying to make sure they've got the tarps
all on the side.
And I'm sure they were ready to cart in some beer
and champagne and they're like, Oh twelfth
inning we gotta go, and reverse back to the storage closet.
I know, I know, Sin,
what was it like for anybody that is watching this and headed
inside the Trop today,
regardless of the performance that you specifically saw that night?
I mean, what was it like being at a World Series game?
That's what I'm saying, and that's what I've
been telling people. I got to go to a World
Series game. Who else can say that?
Only 40,000 other people each night, but got to go to
a World Series game, that's history, that's amazing.
The Brewers hadn't been since, what, the 80s?
So they've been waiting for this for a long
freaking time, and I got to go now.
And we were just in in 2020 and in 08, so it's just,
I'm getting goosebumps. It's just an incredible feeling
to be able to be part of something
like that, especially with this team that raised me,
and raised me literally, and also
raised me in my career of being able to work there for six seasons.
I just, I'm fired up.
And if you're not, please come talk to me,
because I'll make sure you leave fired up.
I was literally going to ask you,
we have totally failed to mention this entire time
that you were an in-game host for how many years?
I was a fan host for, I want to say five, six years.
I think COVID obviously stopped us, but I joined in 2015.
Wow. I was in college,
it was my junior year and I wanted a part time job.
And it was the most fun job I've ever had
to date. And I still go back,
I see all my pals every time I go to the truck, I gotta make my
rounds. I started gate one,
I go and see Bruce at 118 and I just run around, it's a great time.
Bruce at 118, they still remember you,
but you are an unforgettable person.
Walk me through, did you say, do you have the lucky pearls?
The one in the bag.
I'm gonna be honest with you, Regina.
I wore the pearls last night.
I can't find them.
I can't find them from the ones I wore on show yesterday.
I'm sure I just delicately took them off
and just put them where I don't remember at the
moment.
But I will be wearing them tonight, once found,
because they're home here, safe and sound.
I just, it's a lot of- Okay, okay.
A lot of everything for Rays fans today.
Okay, that's all we need to know.
Cynthia Weyer, I could talk to you forever.
I will let you go get some rest.
Thank you so much for coming on here
and continuing to bring all of our viewers and
Rays fans just the energy that we need,
especially after baseball at one o'clock in the morning.
We appreciate you.
We love you.
And we'll talk to you soon.
Love you, Regina.
Raise up.
Raise up, girl.
All right, everyone.
We are going to continue this fun
and energetic coverage with a conversation about steak.
Yandy Diaz, designated hitter,
bringing the Tomahawk steak front and center as a World Series snack,
not only at Tropicana Field now, but at a local market
that is very well known to those who live in and around St. Pete.
Fox 13's Ariel Placencia is going to join us from that market.
Mazzaro is on the other side of this break.
All right, everybody, welcome
back here to Fox Tampa Bay Live.
I'm Regina Gonzalez continuing some all
the way race coverage after a very exciting 12th inning
walk-off win by our team last night.
If you managed to stay up, I can't believe I even
saw this with my own eyes.
I was awake that late, but a lot of us were. Alex Rodriguez,
one of our Fox Sports contributors for the World Series
and for the MLB, he had a very
familiar looking,
if you've been to the Trop in the last couple of months,
Very familiar-looking midnight snack.
Let's listen in.
Yeah.
Let's go.
You going to dive in?
I got it, Kevin.
You just going to dive in?
I tell you, they look great.
But it is 1 in the morning.
I'll get in there.
All right.
Now we're talking.
Wow.
Now we're talking.
That's aggressive.
What an animal.
It looks good.
And, by the way, the concession stands closed at the seventh inning.
It's really good.
It's sitting there for a while.
It smells really good.
No, no.
They just made it.
Eating about 10 of these, it is really good.
It smells really, really good.
They just made it.
Can we place an order for tomorrow?
That's right.
I would love to do that if we could do this.
Daisy, tomorrow dinner.
Let's get the highlights.
Yeah.
Well, you don't even have to go to the Trop anymore
to get a nice cut of a tomahawk steak.
We've got Fox 13's Ariel Placencia joining us at Mazzaro's in St. Pete,
where they are selling their own.
Ariel, have you gotten to take a chomp out of one yet?
Good morning.
Nice breakfast.
Yeah, Regina, that's certainly the goal.
i don't care if it's one in the morning
or 11:30, a tomahawk's always a good idea right i mean that
sounds delicious and that's exactly why we're here
at Mazzaro's Italian Market we're only about two
miles away from the trop
and look what we have here this is Michael Murphy here the butcher at
Mazzaro's Michael how are we feeling fantastic let's go Rays
that's exactly right look at this beautiful
piece of meat my goodness tell us about this cut the tomahawk
so the tomahawk is a ribeye with the
the bone attached. You see here,
this is a beautiful one. You're going to see perfect
marbling in here, a nice spinalis cap.
This steak right here looks unapproachable, but once
you get it at home and you put it on your grill,
you're going to fall in love. There's plenty of
people all over Tampa Bay that have been eating Tomahawks
for years in this place. To see Yandy
come out and do it the other night was really cool.
Absolutely. And I know that you guys sell
Tomahawks all the time, but you posted
on social media about obviously wanting to celebrate like
Yandy what's the uh customer feedback
and response been oh everybody's coming out to see these now
this is uh we've been blowing through them all week
um everybody's really excited about the
Rays they want to join in the celebration get themselves
their own tomahawk which we have plenty
of right down here definitely and you were saying
that people were coming in trying to ask questions
about them maybe considering them
and sir do you mind if we talk to you i saw you i saw you looking
at the tomahawks over here tomahawk
and i've been looking at that too because i've been seeing them
eating them at the game on tv that's right what's
your name sir, Mike, Mike Muley, Mike, Mike, thanks for
joining us here uh live on Tampa Bay Live
so uh tomahawks you thinking about buying one they look
pretty good that's not a bad price $19.99
a pound i mean that's a really good deal so i might and
they got great fresh meats here i come to Mazzaro's
for years i'm coming in for some good wine too but
definitely for the game you know wine goes good
with steak yeah you going to the game tonight
Possibly one of my best friends,
hopefully his son will get me a ticket for free.
That would be even better.
That would be even better, and then hopefully Rays winning,
and then he celebrates with Tomahawk, right?
Watch the whole game, yes.
Yeah, it was incredible.
Hopefully they win tonight, and they keep winning.
That's what we need.
Yes, win.
That's the goal.
Well, thank you so much for your time.
I'll let you keep considering your choices here.
Michael, let's bring you back in here to talk about the Tomahawk.
Now, I'm sure you, I would love to know how to cook it,
Because I'm sure you heard Yandy,
how he likes his tomahawk medium well.
Thoughts on that?
He likes it medium well.
Yandy likes it medium well.
I would say the perfect temperature
for a tomahawk steak is 135 degrees in the middle,
which is close to medium well.
You want to make sure you get all this nice basting fat rendered.
You see this right in here?
That's the added flavor that comes right from the cow.
So he's not doing the wrong thing.
He's definitely doing a good job with it.
Any temperature you want to cook it to, though, that's your preference.
I'm sure that they're just as delicious
as rare as they are at that midwell.
Ariel, can I ask a question?
He keeps hitting that ball like that.
That's exactly right.
Yeah, Regina, what you got?
I have a question because obviously Yandy Diaz,
that steak is as big as his guns.
He probably could attack one by himself.
But how many people does this typically feed one tomahawk?
Say that one more time, Regina.
I want to know how many people that cut of meat
that he's holding could technically feed.
because I know Yandy Diaz can kill one by himself.
Regina's saying, you know, Yandy can eat this entire thing by himself,
but how many people is this going to feed?
We definitely recommend bringing a friend.
They go up to four people.
You know, you want to do about eight ounces per person.
These go two and a half to three pounds.
So depending on how much you like the meat
and how much you like your company,
that'll tell you how many people you can feed.
That's right, that's right.
And listen, I know you guys have been packed all week.
And today, I mean, we've seen everybody coming into the store.
Admittedly, though, you've had some Brewers fans come in here.
Have they been getting the Tomahawks or have they been buying?
No, no, no.
We have a great cheese department.
We have a little cheese cave back there.
That's where the Brewers fans have been mostly.
Okay, okay.
So cheese for the Brewers fans, Tomahawks for the Rays fans.
Thank you so much for your time.
Just what's the message to the Rays fans?
Obviously, I know everyone stayed up late.
They're coming in here.
They're looking for lunch, looking for something to celebrate.
What's your message?
Protein.
Come on.
Come get your tomahawk, we got the protein, the Go Rays.
Absolutely, thank you so much for your time, Michael.
We appreciate it, we appreciate it.
Regina, thoughts?
Tomahawks sound good for lunch, right?
Tomahawks, and then actually I wanted to add, sorry, Ariel.
I'm just like my stomach's growling
and I'm asking these questions out of pure
hunger.
What is good to eat with a tomahawk steak?
Are we talking a little mozzarella, a good salad?
What are some good sides?
Any recommendations on what would go good with this?
You're eating this and you're still hungry.
You want some other things to go with it.
thoughts? We have plenty of things here. We have plenty
of roasted vegetables, potatoes, everything like that.
We got roasted fingerlings and
some Parmesan cauliflower.
You could grab those and pop them in the oven. By the time
this is done, you got your whole meal cooked up
for you around here. We do it soup to nuts.
Start to finish, you can start raw
or we can prepare something for you. We've got you covered.
Definitely no cheese though. No cheese, no cheese with your-
No cheese on tomahawk, thank you very much.
Good to know. And then Ariel, I'm so
Sorry. One more question. If we see another game that goes 12 innings,
how do we handle leftovers of a tomahawk?
Are leftovers wishful thinking?
Leftovers? Leftovers of the tomahawk?
I mean, I don't know. When the Rays win,
there ain't gonna be any leftovers, right?
There shouldn't be many leftovers. There
shouldn't be. But if you wanted to grab a little creme fraiche,
I do enjoy steak and caviar.
And nicely finished steak with a little creme fraiche and caviar,
that's a beautiful finish. And we can do that too.
That does not sound bad. I love it.
Ariel, thank you so much.
Thank you to our fabulous butcher.
We appreciate you.
I'm starving.
We will talk to you soon, my friend.
Have fun out there.
Go do some shopping and eat some steak for us.
Absolutely.
Thanks, Regina.
Go Rays.
Thanks so much.
Go Rays.
Go Rays.
All right, everybody.
This has been so much fun.
I love it.
For people who are running on barely any sleep,
everybody just has the, I keep using the word
energy, but that's what you got to keep up right now, is that energy.
because our rays are feeding off of it. They need it.
We are going to take a quick commercial break.
When we come back, we're actually going
to switch gears here a little bit. It's a Halloween.
Halloween is on Saturday.
I know everybody is high prime time spooky season thinking right now.
So what about those pumpkins?
I actually have a pumpkin at home that I bought. I'm looking at the
wrong camera. I'm looking at the wrong someone.
I need another energy drink. We're going to talk
pumpkin carving when we come back uh we're gonna have
a world championship pumpkin carver
and artist here with us
on Tampa Bay Live after this break
all right everyone welcome back to
Fox Tampa Bay Live a little after 11 40 here and we
although we are cheering on the Tampa Bay Rays
and that's going to remain a huge focus
of our coverage throughout the day there is another
event that I cannot forget.
I am the Halloween queen, the scream queen. There's actually
going to be a Halloween special airing tonight
at 7.30 that I make an appearance in. It's
hosted by our very own Amari Craft
because she has been going all over the place, central
Florida, around Tampa Bay to check out all the spooky experiences.
And she's going to showcase all of it for you.
That's going to air tonight and over
the weekend but what are we doing with our pumpkins i have seen
so many creative ideas i
have a blank canvas of a pumpkin at home
and i need some ideas on what to do with it so what
we're going to do right now is we are going
to bring in a professional joining us this morning
is Adam Beerton a nationally recognized food sculptor
and Food Network champion, we already
asked him to carve a raised logo that would have been too much
but Adam, we so this is incredible
what you have here. How are you doing? Happy almost Halloween.
Yes, thank you for having me, guys.
Happy almost Halloween. And this is my grind time,
my busy season. It's the last few days of October,
and I've been carving pumpkins nonstop.
Wow, so tell me about your life
as a professional pumpkin carver. How did that happen?
Walk me through how you got to this incredible point in your life.
So I went to art school for high school,
so I was always a visual artist. I fell in love
with the creativity of Halloween at a very young age,
and I just never stopped. I moved
to New York City, I got onto a show called Halloween Wars,
and I won that show. And that's
kind of what solidified me as a professional pumpkin carver,
and I've been carving pumpkins
ever since.
Wow, so walk me through,
I know you have some incredible examples here, but you
You also have so many incredible videos.
When you're talking about the detail that goes
into some of your work, how long does
something like what you're doing right now in this video,
how long does that typically
take?
So this style of sculptural pumpkin where I'm actually
not carving all the way through
the wall of the pumpkin
and lighting it up like your typical jack-o'-lantern, I can spend
anywhere from four to 12 hours on a single pumpkin.
Wow, wow.
Is there a certain place, does a certain pumpkin or size,
does size and shape matter?
I know that's a big thing when you go to the pumpkin patch,
you're looking for the right
shape.
Yes, for sure.
I always like to enforce that,
that we want to play our design into the shape and size
of the pumpkin rather than force the design
into a pumpkin that might not fit.
So the sculptural style that you see,
I'm looking for something that's a little bit
taller, that's maybe heavy for its weight
and will have a thicker wall that I can actually
sculpt into.
Wow.
But as you can see here, I have a whole bunch
of different examples where little baby
pumpkins and the use of seeds or potatoes
and carrots are great ways to enhance your
design.
Yeah, I mean, walk me through what people need to know.
Obviously, not everyone can do this.
So when you're working with people who wanna create this,
but maybe are not as well crafted
as you.
My job as the professional carver is to kind of inspire some creativity
and give you guys
some tips and tricks.
So I have some tools here that you probably have at home
and are great for pumpkin carving.
And I have this little example here that I've kind
of mapped out a traditional jack-o'-lantern.
You can see that I've cut the hole
in the bottom rather than cutting the hole in the
top, which is maybe what you're used to.
But I think preserving the stem's character
is very important for the pumpkin.
And leaving that stem intact will actually extend
the overall life of the pumpkin.
So there's a couple of ways,
but these little dry erase markers are really great because
they can mark up your pumpkin, but then they wipe right off.
And what I like to tell people is,
you wanna stay away from really big format knives.
Your big kitchen knife is probably the worst idea.
You want it to go with something smaller like this.
These are two of my favorite knives.
These are little paring knives.
You're probably used to something like
this from your pumpkin carving tool kit, which
obviously will work, but you can see,
I'm gonna cut a couple different shapes here.
This little serrated edge you can kinda see will tear up
that surface versus a paring
knife will give you a nice clean cut.
So I like to use these small format knives
and scooping your pumpkin really clean is
very important.
You wanna thin out that wall and it's just
gonna make carving your pumpkin that much
easier.
Wow, you make that look so easy.
Well, lots of practice, but there's so many fun ways to carve pumpkins.
I think that people are, you know, a little scared or timid to try something new,
but pumpkin carving
is experimental and it's meant to be fun.
And at the end of the day,
we have to realize that it's just a big piece of fruit and, you know, it's
eventually going to rot.
So, you know, get out there, have fun and carve something cool.
Definitely.
What would you say,
Is it a question that, you know, a lot of people may make a certain mistake
when they want to go and carve a pumpkin?
What are your best tips and tricks?
Well, I don't want people to be scared of making a mistake.
Some of my mistakes have actually turned into some of my best carvings.
So it's, uh, you know, a removable material.
So like once you remove that shape or that piece, uh, you can't put it back on.
But the slight difference between the placement of the eyes
and the mouth can completely change
the character.
Yeah.
So, you know, for instance, I've cut this shape out of here,
but adjusting that shape is very
easy and you know you can kind of develop that character as you go.
And there's so many fun other ideas like you probably have
a melon baller in your kitchen
drawer.
And these are really cool
because you can, you know, just cut little eyes out of here and you can even
turn these around and make them little polka dots.
So that's cool.
Vegetable peelers are really great.
Sometimes they're a little too small for the size of your pumpkin.
They work a little bit better on smaller ones.
But some of that sculptural stuff you've seen, I'm using ceramic tools.
So this is like a big ceramic tool
and it's really great for peeling out pumpkin skin.
So, you know, again, you just wanna experiment and get some inspiration,
check out my page and just
get out there and have some fun.
Now, I know that you just mentioned pumpkins are a fruit,
they obviously don't last forever.
Is there anything people can do to make
their creations last a little bit longer?
Sure, there's a couple tricks, nothing is guaranteed.
It really starts with the freshness of your pumpkin.
So if you can get out to the pumpkin patch
and find something that's recently picked,
and usually the indicator is these nice green stems.
If you see a green stem, it usually means it's nice and fresh,
and that's just automatically
going to extend its life.
And we wanna treat it like a piece of fruit.
You wouldn't take a bite out of your apple
and put it on your front porch and expect
it to last a couple weeks.
So what I actually do is I wrap all my pumpkins in saran wrap
and I put them in a fridge or
a cool dark space when they're not on display
and that is just gonna ultimately make them
last longer.
I love it.
I also have this little lemon juice water solution that I use
and I spray all my
pumpkins down, keeps it moist and kind of slows that mold growth.
Okay, very smart, Adam,
I love this so much for people who are watching and they
want more of you, they want more inspiration, how can they follow you?
It's very easy, it's just my name, Adam Bearden,
I'm on Instagram, TikTok, you can check out
my website, adambearden.com.
I have links to a lot of all my favorite tools,
I've got some tutorials and templates, endless
inspiration for you guys.
This isn't Chris, these pictures, Adam, are amazing.
Do you have a favorite?
Do you have a favorite that you've made?
My God, I love all the pumpkins.
So the last year I was able to do a almost 2500 pound pumpkin,
it was like 10 feet tall.
It was this big monster and it
was eating up some of these little characters.
I did that with the New York Botanical Garden
and that was a pretty cool car.
Wow, my gosh, I could talk to you forever.
This has been amazing.
Adam Bearden, thank you so much for joining us here
on Fox Tampa Bay Live with this incredible
inspiration.
I need to go home and up my game.
I have a pumpkin that we got this weekend.
I haven't gotten a chance to do anything with it,
and now I'm feeling inspired thanks to you.
Well, I can't wait to see what you come up with.
Thanks, Adam.
Take care, and happy Halloween.
Happy Halloween, guys.
All right, everyone.
Wow, that was so cool, and my background's changing.
That's fun.
We're going to make it Halloween.
There we go.
Spooky.
All right, guys, we are going to be right back after this break.
We're going to wrap up our show,
continuing to talk about our Tampa Bay Rays.
But what an awesome Halloween segment that can get you feeling all
the feels as it's just a few days away.
I think the only the first time in what is going to be,
I believe, 10 years that Halloween is going to be on a Saturday.
So I hope you have your costumes ready.
You're ready to do some trick or treating.
There's been a lot of events happening across Florida just
to get us in the spooky mood.
So I hope you're feeling it, too.
We'll be right back.
All right, everybody,
welcome back to Fox Tampa
Bay Live on this Wednesday,
October 28th.
We are just a few hours away from Game 5.
Tampa Bay Rays taking on the Brewers at Tropicana Field,
a forced Game 5 after the Rays had such
an impressive 12th inning walk-off win last night.
We're so proud of them.
Maybe we're going to take this thing back to Milwaukee.
Here is hoping our sports guys, our sports team working so hard.
I think you're actually gonna hear from Fox's Sean Barry in the noon.
We figured that we would spare them
because they actually were working pretty
late last night.
Actually, let's take a listen to this.
We love Sean and Scott and all them so much.
We took this from their social media.
If you've ever wondered what it feels like
to leave a baseball game at 1 17 in
the morning, this is what it feels like.
How are you feeling guys?
Game four.
I can't wait to be back here in like three hours.
Game four goes to the Rays.
I don't love sleeping at all.
No.
It's the worst.
We will sleep in the offseason.
How can you sleep with an ending like that?
Why didn't you?
Ben Williamson walks it off, if you want to call it that.
I mean, gosh.
Look, we will sleep in the offseason whenever
that is, but it ain't today.
Smoke.
I like my Crabstone, my Grouper Fried,
my Beaches Like Heaven, Rays in seven.
Wow, we're going to need to make him repeat that.
They're doing so good.
They're working day in and day out
to bring you some incredible coverage.
And so is our entire Fox 13 news team.
I know Mark and Ali, I believe they're going
to be back at the trap tonight.
We're going to have Chris Cato out there.
Chris Cato has truly made me miss being in the wild so much.
Obviously being here, I haven't been able to go out
and do as many in field wide, out
in the field live shots, but he has been having so much fun.
We've got Evan Axelbank at Ferg's.
We've got, what is it? We've got Ariel, who is at Mazzaro's.
She's doing the kind of
race food tour today.
So it's gonna be a lot of fun, and it's gonna continue with Fox 13's
Linda Hurtado and the News at Noon. Hey, Linda.
Hey, Regina. We are bringing our viewers with us.
They're going with Sean. They're going with Chris.
We are all in, all behind the scenes,
all day long aren't we oh my i love it i love it actually i don't know
if you saw it linda but in
our three o'clock stream i think on monday scott
was so kind he zoomed with us while he was going
through the metal detector for the media entry i
was like this is the true behind the scenes
content that our viewers need they've been they've
been wonderful i love it and when they were in
milwaukee it was like we got to go to media day
with them i mean it was fantastic i've never seen
anything like it was like a free for all so let's do it
again, shall we? Let's do it again. Have a good afternoon
