Another self-driving taxi goes rogue.
Numerous incidents nationwide.
The taxi drives passengers into active Los Angeles fire scene.
A self-driving taxi darted past emergency flares
into an active fire scene, according to KABC-TV.
on Tuesday. The incident involving
a Waymo robo-taxi took place in Hollywood, California,
the news outlet reported.
The autonomous vehicle apparently took a wrong turn on Melrose Avenue
and entered an area that had been blocked off
by the Los Angeles Fire Department.
There were passengers in the back seat, according to the report.
Witnesses told KABC the car stayed
in the restricted area for around 10 minutes before making
a U-turn and driving away.
Wemo is owned by Google's parent company, Alphabet.
This is just one incident in a growing list
of oddities occurring with these autonomous vehicles.
In September, a Wemo taxi
was pulled over after making an illegal U-turn
in front of police officers operating a DUI checkpoint.
I guess he didn't want to get busted.
The San Bernardino Police Department said in a post
on social media platform X that they had to contact
the company to inform them of the glitch, quote-unquote.
Quote, since there was no human driver, a ticket could not be issued.
Our citation books don't have a box for robot,
the department's post on X explained.
Hopefully the reprogramming will keep it
from making any more illegal moves.
The Facebook post went on, for those who believe that we
are being lenient, there is legislation in the works
that will allow officers to issue the company tickets and notices.
One ex-post said California law only allows officers
to issue moving violations to human drivers.
legislators attempted to address these safety concerns
but the final law was weakened to only
allow quote-unquote notices of non-compliance
to be reported to the department of motor vehicles
and did not allow tickets to be issued
that law assembly bill 1777 won't take effect until july
leaving enforcement stuck in limbo.
This is only a start, folks. CBS News reported a September 29th
incident involving a Waymo vehicle in Atlanta
that reportedly zoomed past a school bus that
was stopped with its flashing lights on.
This could have been a huge tragedy. And yet another
story that made national headlines,
including coverage by the New York Times, a beloved San
Francisco cat named Kit Kat was killed October 27th
by a Waymo taxi causing an outpouring of
emotion and calls for increased regulations.
Wow, folks. So they can't ticket them. They're
rogue. Please share, subscribe,
and always remember anything's possible in California,
and I guess in Bizarro World as well. God bless.
