Wānaka New Zealand | A Kiwi Favourite Holiday Destination | Spring 2026 | Walking Tour

Experience the beauty of Wanaka in early spring in this relaxing 4K walking tour through the lively town centre and along the stunning shores of Lake Wanaka. With cherry blossoms in bloom, busy cafés and restaurants, crystal-clear blue water, and snow-dusted mountains in the background, Wanaka offers a beautiful combination of small-town charm and spectacular alpine scenery.
Our walk begins on Ardmore Street, right in the heart of Wanaka, surrounded by beautiful cherry blossoms that bring a touch of spring colour to the town. We continue along the main street, where cafés, restaurants, and shops are bustling with activity. Outdoor dining areas are full of people enjoying their meals and coffee, while others stroll through town, cycle along the street, or walk their dogs. Across the road, Lake Wanaka provides a beautiful waterfront backdrop to this lively town centre.
From Ardmore Street, we continue along Ardmore Street and into the Wanaka Skate Park area, before crossing the road towards the lakeside. Here, the atmosphere gradually changes from the lively streets to the peaceful beauty of Lake Wanaka. Beautiful lakeside villas line the waterfront, and walking trails follow the shoreline, offering lovely views across the lake.
As we follow the lakeside path, the scenery becomes truly breathtaking. It is early spring, and the surrounding mountains are still dusted with snow. Against the deep blue lake, the white mountain peaks create a stunning alpine panorama. Gentle waves ripple along the shore, adding to the peaceful atmosphere. The contrast between the fresh spring blossoms, the blue water, and the snow-covered mountains makes this one of the most beautiful times of year to explore Wanaka on foot.
A little about Wanaka: Located in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island, Wanaka sits on the southern shore of Lake Wanaka, surrounded by the Southern Alps. The town is a popular destination for outdoor activities, including walking, hiking, cycling, kayaking, and skiing in winter. Nearby attractions include the famous #ThatWanakaTree, Roys Peak, and Mount Aspiring National Park.
Wanaka has a relatively small permanent population compared with New Zealand's major cities, although its population has grown considerably in recent years. The wider Wanaka urban area had approximately 9,000 residents at the 2018 Census and around 12,000 by the 2023 Census, while the wider district has a larger population. During the holiday season, the town becomes much busier as visitors arrive to enjoy its lakeside scenery, outdoor lifestyle, and relaxed atmosphere.
Join me on this spring morning walk through Wanaka, from its charming town centre to the beautiful lakeside trail. Whether you are planning a visit to New Zealand, remembering a previous trip, or simply looking for a peaceful virtual escape, I hope this walking tour brings you a little closer to the natural beauty of the South Island.
