I've just been on a panel to discuss some
of the amazing opportunities that are in mathematics
and beyond, particularly where a degree
or a course in mathematics can take you into
the workforce and how you use those skills in industry.
So when I hear maths,
the first three things I think of are engineering, numbers and careers.
Algebra.
Difficult.
Memorisation.
Difficult.
Hard.
And I can't do it.
We have an insatiable appetite for people with STEM skills
and we just do not have the pipeline coming through.
So you actually say that someone who was not top of their class at maths
could actually create a fast-growing,
successful, innovative business using maths.
I mean, that's pretty amazing.
We need to have discussions like these to sort of open up.
What's going on and where mathematics can take you,
not in terms of just university,
but the fact that it's going to be a key skill in any career you pick.
My vision is to actually have a fundamental change
in societal attitudes towards maths,
and we all have a role to play in that.
It's going to challenge us
and I'm really excited to be at the forefront of that, because
it's an exciting curriculum and teaching kids is an exciting thing.
Tonight had such a great buzz to it I think
and it was awesome to see such a great turnout
and yeah the different kinds of people that were here
and they're interested in maths careers and
just some awesome things that were said.
I was sitting there tweeting and I just couldn't keep
up with like the amazing quotes. I love the magazine.
I think it's really important to
have positive role models of people
that have used maths in their career beyond and to make
Careers in mathematics are a lot more relevant to the students
that are going through studying mathematics at the moment.
We're really passionate about continuing to tell
the story about how STEM can lead to the careers of the future.
We're really excited to start those stories,
to connect with regional Australia
and to really get kids thinking about how they can create
a job that they love and love what they do.
