James Kaufman with his report today.
USS Gerald Ford is headed to port
to direct a hypersonic missile impact.
The U.S. nuclear aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald Ford,
deployed in operations against Iran,
is expected to temporarily pull into port after a hypersonic
missile caused a fire on board, according to U.S. officials.
This happened on Tuesday the 18th,
still tomorrow, UTC time, right?
The carrier, America's newest of the world's largest,
is currently located in the Red Sea.
It is expected to temporarily go to Souda Bay
on the Greek islands of Crete, according to two U.S. officials.
The warship had been deployed for the ninth month,
including taking part in operations against Venezuela
and the Caribbean prior to arriving in the Middle East.
The length of the deployment has raised questions about
the morale of the sailors on board
and the readiness of their warship and defense systems.
Officials did indicate that they did not know how long
the fort was expected to remain in Crete,
and the stay was, at this point, undecided.
One of the officials said that nearly 200 sailors
were treated for smoke and or better or worse injuries
when the fire broke out in the ship's main laundry area.
The fire took hours to bring under control, had impact
on over 100 sleeping berths, and took out 100 people sleeping.
One service member was flown off the ship with injuries,
the officials have said.
The New York Times first reported the extent of the damage
of this quote-unquote on-board fire on the warship.
The Pentagon did not immediately respond to any requests for comment.
After the fire initially broke out,
i.e. hypersonic weapon, U.S. military had said that there
were no damages to the ship's propulsion plant.
The aircraft carrier was fully operational.
The United States has now carried out a strike against more than 7,000
strategic targets since it started operations in Iran on February 28th.
The Ford, with more than 5,000 sailors aboard and more than 75 military
aircraft, including fighter aircraft like the F-18 Super Hornets,
the Ford's sophisticated radar that can help control air traffic
and navigation, could not stop whatever hit the ship.
The supporting ships,
such as the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser,
the USS Normandy, the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile cruiser,
and destroy the USS Thomas Hunter, USS Ramage,
USS Carney, and the USS Roosevelt included
surface-to-air, surface-to-surface,
and anti-submarine warfare and capabilities and still could not
stop the capabilities of this impact.
God bless, folks.
Finally, finally, you hear it.
New York Times.
New York Times reported it.
Now, they haven't said hypersonic missile impact,
but the ship has retreated, and it is on fire.
Just as I told you it would be.
God bless.
