A brief insight into Mark who a week after the 2014 floods in Staines by the Thames is still stranded at his prefabricated home along the river bank.

The winter floods of 2014 were among the most extensive experienced along the River Thames in recent decades, following months of persistent rainfall that saturated the ground and left the river system unable to absorb further water. In communities such as Staines upon Thames, rising water levels remained for days rather than hours, leaving homes isolated and many residents displaced. The flooding exposed the vulnerability of properties built close to the river and highlighted the complex interaction between prolonged rainfall, high groundwater levels and the Thames' network of tributaries, channels and flood defences.

A week after the floodwaters first reached his prefabricated home, Mark remained stranded on the riverbank, illustrating the prolonged nature of the event long after the initial emergency response had subsided. His situation reflects the reality that for many residents the impact of flooding extended beyond the dramatic images of submerged streets. Recovery involved waiting for water levels to fall, assessing structural damage, restoring essential services and deciding whether homes built alongside the river could continue to withstand increasingly frequent and prolonged flood events.
