EXHIBITION: About the North: Imagined Dialogues. The Side Gallery, Newcastle.

A visit to the wonderful Side Gallery in Newcastle to have a look at their latest curated exhibition About the North: Imagined Dialogues which features the work of some of the world most reputable photographers and their project work in the North of England.

Side is the only long-standing documentary film and photography organisation in England committed to working-class stories. Through exhibitions, screenings, events and learning programmes, we create meaningful ways for people to engage with real histories, and the places and conditions that shape people's lives. We also support photographers, filmmakers and local groups to make and share work that looks closely at lived experience.

We are proudly based in the North East of England, and its people, photographers, cultural life, and irreplaceable heritage, shape our priorities and the projects we take forward. From our home here we work across the region, the UK, and internationally - linking local experience to wider conversations and building cross-border connections through documentary practice.

At the heart of Side is the UNESCO-recognised AmberSide Collection, a powerful record of working-class life, everyday experience and the shifting realities of the North East and beyond. Through work with exhibition partners, community and heritage centres and digital platforms, we extend the reach of these stories and explore pressing questions about how lives are seen, remembered and understood.
