-- First real snowfall of the year, it was very heavy and wet.
Started a fire, hung out.
Finally got some substantial snow.
Got some snow the other day and it melted almost immediately.
Today's almost a whiteout, as you can see looking over the field there.
But the bad thing with that is with the snow came
the drop in temperature.
All this was frozen the other day.
Oh, there's no snow on the inside of it, but it sure is soaking wet.
There's a couple of pieces here that aren't too wet,
but all the bottom, the bed, the seats all soaked.
Well, this should be a challenge
on the search for some dead standing.
Oh, looks like he's seen something.
What are you doing?
Come.
I smell something.
Come, come, come.
What is it?
Anyways, like I said, on the look for some dead standing,
preferably with some bark on it.
Try and keep the water or the moisture out of it as much as possible.
So something like this would be ideal.
I'm not going to take it because it's
a little thick for what I want to use.
I just don't want to take down that big of a tree. It's pretty tall.
I'm not going to be out here for too long. I'm not going to burn it up.
And if I take it down, then it's just going to get soaking wet.
So I'll save it for another time where I'm actually gonna use
the whole piece. Alright, here's a cluster of maples
I want to take this one here
Nice and thin, it's about a little bit smaller than
my wrist. In the winter time you can't tell
if something's dead or not
I just like to give it a little slice with my knife.
It's not green underneath
Which it's not.
In the winter
time
firewood
warms you
three ways
Collecting it, cutting it, and burning it. I believe that to be true
I posted a while back, actually a long time ago,
about using my Mora knife as a striker
and getting charcloth to catch,
and there had been a little bit of interest in it recently.
I had a couple private messages and somebody asking me how I did it,
so it's definitely
not my idea.
So I just take my knife, my Mora,
and I hold it with the blade point, like the tip of the
blade pointing up, and I'll hold my flint with my left hand
because I'm right handed,
I'll just place the char cloth as I would
as if I was using a normal striker
Then this is
gonna work is
how I want to
try to start
my fire today
Like I said,
it's gonna be a challenge.
Okay. Now I'm gonna leave
that in there almost
smoldering for a minute
So I gotta get some ---- flamed up on me.
So I gotta get my fire pit ready
I didn't want to put the bark slabs down
too early because then it would've got wet.
This is very delicate
Go start
to do this
and film
at the
same time
do this
period
but it
is so wet
out here
I can't even stress. I know I've said
it 10 times, but it is ridiculous.
