James Kaufman, World News Report today.
Ladies and gentlemen, today has been a blast, literally a blast.
After weeks of no activity on our star,
we've had five M-class solar flares,
and a couple of pretty strong ones.
There are most definitely, most definitely,
coronal mass ejections inbound to hit Earth very shortly.
what you're seeing here
is a one-two punch sympathetic flare happening after another
flare what you're seeing is a one-six the first
one over here the one-six followed by a one-two
and they happen just as quick
as it looks like they did here i'll show them to you on goes
and they did create a coronal mass ejection together that is inbound
but these aren't even
close to the strongest m-class flares
that we saw today just the beginning this is ar419
and this is ar420 and both of them are delta
class currently ready to x flare at any moment
head over there goes x-ray flux we're taking
a look at exactly what occurred and believe it or
not this is what you saw on the chronograph just now
that was the two M flares those were the M
1.6 and the M 1.2 followed right behind
that now that was followed
by an M 4.3 followed by an M
1.7 followed by an M 4.9 all of them basically coming
from those two sunspots that are
generally earth-facing especially 4220
that dumped most all of them on us, let's take a look
all right, this is what we have guys
those first two flares right here, one from 4419, the next one
from 4420, sympathetic solar flare
from 4420, you can see that both of them are red meaning
they're both delta class, most complex sunspot we know
you can see that 4420
turned from beta gamma to delta just today, 4419 has
been delta class, then we move up with a big
pop come from 4419, it is moving around towards
the exiting limb here on M of 4.3, moving further up
for 4419 again and M 1.7, you see all the activity coming
from 4420, but the flares are not as large
And then that final flare, the M 4419
So we'll see how much of that is inbound
It'll probably take them some time to model that.
That model is not finished yet.
We do have some, well,
we can see the CME ejection from the first two flares on LASCO
And we really have a treat here.
We can see the halo eruption from the first two M flares
They weren't very strong, but are inbound towards Earth
And then we have Penumbra 2025, R3, coming into the picture
It will become more visible
It's only half the distance to the sun.
There's no chance of it burning up.
It's going to fly right by between us
and the sun over the next couple days.
what an interesting situation, i'm not quite sure
if this is going to be visible during the day
they said it was going to be, i have to follow up
on that but it's getting close enough to the sun
it's going to brighten up quite a bit, headed over to go
so ultraviolet imagery you can see
that 4419 was much more earth-facing when it flared
and it's becoming almost to the limb
there you can see it continue to flare there
and 4420 is this area here we have tons of sunspots
coming around that look very active
and we've got some coronal holes that are trying to form as well
so we have all types of things going on on our star today
and over to our D region absorption
prediction center you can see those M-flares
as they hit one after another you'll see quite
few of those one or do we jump to option prediction
I guess we only get to see the last
two but now sure
have more coming
oh there we go
stronger flare there we should have more coming
I might have hit the wrong button let's see if we
can catch those last
couple here looks like we're gonna give
them to us it doesn't look like it
after all but we did get to see at least three
M-flares pop off and i guess the big one was over
the Atlantic second one was basically over
the Atlantic and parts of south america and the big
one as far as we're concerned was another M-flare over
the Caribbean happened right there right over
the u.s so we got to see four
of the five flares there pretty impressive all right take a look at
HMI intensigram there are two delta class
sunspot groups here 4420 and 4419 4419 will
probably be out of play by tomorrow
but we do have some more activity coming around the limb here
and we had a total of only four sunspots earth facing
the other two are simple 4421 and 4422
all right 4419 4420 4420 is a reverse polarity
or could be argued to be a reverse polarity
sunspot with black over white
in the northern hemisphere well this is clearly not reversed
this one's been giving us the most trouble it
was located right about here at the beginning of the
day but so the earlier flares would will would
be what we were worried about so most of the bigger
flares occurred later in the evening we'll probably miss earth
although the first two
definitely created a chromospheric ejection i've already
been modeled to hit earth and i will actually
read NOAA's summary for you guys about the incoming CME
when we took a look at so 284 angstroms
probably the slide that allows us to see
the most can see coming around the limb we've got some
serious players and there are some holes trying
to form here after weeks of quiet the sun awakened
the action began today with a double M1 class solar flare it
was a sympathetic flare caused
by magnetic teleconnections between the two widely spaced sunspots 4419
and 4420. these sunspots have
since produced additional M-class flares including an M4
and M5 solar flare the double flare launched
a coronal mass ejection into space.
So, chronographs saw that and more.
Comet Panstar C2025R3
has also entered LASCO-C3's field of view.
The comet will be visible to SOHO for the next few days
as it passes almost directly between Earth and the Sun.
It could be a good show
and will update our movie frequently.
Meanwhile, Coronal Mass Ejection shown above is not squarely
aimed at Earth, but it seems to be Earth-directed.
A NASA model suggests it will deliver a glancing blow on April 26.
This could spark a G1 to G2 class geomagnetic storm
with auroras at high altitudes.
with that said god bless you guys on the 26th we could have
a little geomagnetic storm i think
those big infernos might have missed us
and we've got some real trouble coming around the limb
as we speak
