Our reporter, Alizé Gadivais, is covering that for us in Paris.
So, Alizé, give us the latest
on what's happening there at Porte d'Italie.
Well, we know that 135 people have been arrested
so far across France.
That's the number from 1 p.m.
Also here at Porte d'Italie, in the march, we saw Jean-Luc Mélenchon,
that's the leader of the left-wing party LFI.
And well, here there's people are screaming, chanting.
They're chanting Macron resign.
They're also chanting anti-police chants.
And we saw one of the helicopters a couple of minutes ago above us.
And everyone started booing.
They are really not happy
with the police deployment of the helicopters.
And in the green building behind me,
there are people on the balconies hyping up the crowd.
and in general it's quite peaceful well of course people
are whistling chanting screaming but like
we haven't seen any tear gas yet
and the police is not super present at least not in the march
and the road however is quite tight
because we are marching from Porte d'Italie to Porte de Vincennes
we are marching along the tram lines
so the road is quite tight and even at some point we had to
cross a bridge which in terms of security is not great
if there were clashes or something of this
sort. My colleague Claire Pacalan is near Porte de Vincennes
and she told me that there's another
group of people that's going to join the march.
So the two groups will collide at some point.
We are about to see whether the police is going to deroute them
or if there will be a big clash
of two groups of people, which might actually be quite dangerous.
So what are some demands that these protesters are making today?
Well, they want to, first of all, be allowed to march.
As we know, I talked earlier that the protest was changed
from Bastille to Nation to here, Porte d'Italie to Porte de Vincennes.
And some people didn't know that,
so they showed up at the wrong location.
And they say that that's, first of all,
not very safe and secure to change the location like this last minute.
And second of all, it doesn't really respect their democratic freedom
and the right to protest.
Of course, a lot of people are here to support the students
who are asking for a better school infrastructure,
to have less students in classes to be able to learn.
And they're also asking, of course,
for more money for the public infrastructure.
and lower cost of living and lower cost of gas and fuel prices.
Alizé, thank you for bringing us
those updates from Porte d'Italie in Paris.
