Nick Turpin's On the Night Bus was published by Hoxton Mini Press in 2017 as part of the Tales from the City series. The photographs were made over a two year period from a fixed position above the Elephant and Castle roundabout in South London, where Turpin used a long focal length lens to photograph passengers travelling on the upper decks of London buses during winter evenings. Working through steamed and rain covered windows, he recorded commuters, night workers and travellers absorbed in conversation, sleep or quiet reflection, transforming familiar journeys into a sustained study of contemporary urban life. The book includes a foreword by novelist Will Self and reflects Turpin's long standing commitment to candid street photography.

Rather than entering the buses, Turpin remained outside, photographing through layers of glass and condensation that soften detail and create painterly effects. The resulting images explore the relationship between public and private space, revealing intimate moments that occur within the anonymity of public transport. Without identifying his subjects or interrupting their routines, Turpin presents the night bus as a place where people briefly withdraw from the pace of the city before returning to their individual lives. On the Night Bus stands as an important contribution to contemporary British street photography, demonstrating how observation, patience and a carefully defined viewpoint can transform everyday travel into a compelling documentary project.
