Former nurse sentenced for sexual assault

Let's get live to Fox 2's Scott Wolchek on Detroit's West Side. Scott, this is actually the first of many criminal cases against this nurse. Yes, it is, Rup. Yeah, Wilfredo Figueroa Berrios. He was sentenced up to 15 years in prison for two different counts, and he was found guilty by jury of sexually assaulting a woman here back in August 2022, here when he was a nurse at DMC's Sinai Grace Hospital. Of course, he either resigned or was let go after these allegations came out. But, yes, seven other criminal cases are coming up with this guy. He has a lot of allegations and accusations against him. And this was the first criminal case to go down, and this happened in August of 2022. There's also a civil lawsuit with over 30 women who have stepped forward saying that they were assaulted in some way by Figueroa Berrios here. And some of those were allegedly at the DMC. Some of those were at other different places. He had worked at a mental health facility in Livonia before this. Now, even though he was found guilty, he did claim innocence. Take a listen to the woman who is involved in this case. Of course, we can't show you or name her, but you can listen to her words and take a listen to the defendant himself here. I was at Sinai Grace because of my drinking. I passed out. A stranger called for help, and I woke up in the hospital bed. I was there to be taken care of. He was my nurse, and he came into my room again and again, and he did those things to me because he knew I was too drunk to stop him, and he thought I was too drunk to be believed. I want to be very clear about something. Your Honor, nothing he did to me in that room was medical care. I have performed amazing things. I have made a difference between life and death in so many souls. All of this is now gone because I have been found guilty of a crime I did not commit. This is a very, very big win for survivors of sexual violence and sexual abuse. And this is an absolute validation that they were believed and that people will be held accountable when these acts of violence and these acts are committed. So what's next? Well, we've got all those different criminal cases, many of them out of Wayne County. Remember, this guy also accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a porta potty at one point a couple of summers ago. So some very serious allegations. And we've also got that civil suit.
