An autumn evening in the Japanese countryside, beside the irori hearth in my old home.
I couldn’t wait to use my new Nambu cast-iron grill, so I spent the day searching the local shops for lamb.

As the lamb begins to sizzle, the bustle of the day slowly fades.
Tonight, I’m having Torikai shochu with soda in a Ryukyu glass.

A little frying pan holds warm wakame soup, and yakisoba rounds off the meal.
Then I dim the lights and linger by the fire with a cup of tea.

The evenings grow darker earlier as I think about my first winter in this old Japanese house.
The kerosene heater I’ve prepared brings back memories of the warmth I knew as a student.

In this vast world, you somehow found this little irori.
I’d like to treasure that small connection.
So you can find this fire again, I hope you’ll stay close.
