AI GeneratedA recent ICE enforcement incident in northwest Harris County has sparked a wave of community unity. Residents are leaving \"I Voted\" stickers at a memorial for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, signaling that immigration enforcement and local tragedies are heavily influencing their perspectives and motivations as they head to the ballot box.
We had another incident involving ICE, this in Harris County.
Let's pull up a map to show you guys exactly where it took place.
We're looking at Old Fulton Road near 249,
that's northwest Harris County.
And you know, when you talk about ICE incidents, this is at least
our third significant one here that's been happening recently.
And for some people, immigration is translating to the ballot box.
So let's get to Karis Belger, who spoke to a man there.
Karis.
Yeah, Anthony, I spoke with David Almaguer,
you can see the I voted stickers here at this
makeshift memorial for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo here on Canal Street.
David's sticker was one of many that was left here.
He and many other people chose to leave
their I voted stickers here after they went to the
ballot box as a way to show unity.
They say now as they come upon this election,
it's not just about voting for Lorenzo, it's
about voting for people who were in their communities.
And in fact, as I spoke to David,
Lorenzo's son, Ronaldo Salgado, walked up.
This all started when Ronaldo left
his sticker at this memorial for his father.
He said he did it because his vote was in his father's honor.
Well, there are a few people in the community who saw that,
and they decided to do the same.
And over the last few days, at least 100 stickers have now been left.
In fact, right before you came to me here live,
I saw at least two more people leave their stickers here, Anthony.
And when you think about it, right,
this is all because of what's happening with immigration
enforcement here in Houston.
Obviously, this would happen with Lorenzo,
there was another incident involving a man
who was hit by a car, and of course, what happened this morning.
Our understanding is the gentleman
who was involved in that is in ICE custody after being
taken to the hospital.
But as for people like David Almaguer,
he tells me he grew up in this neighborhood,
that's why he stuck his sticker here, his brother did it on Monday.
And he says seeing the stickers here represents unity for him.
And he hopes that other people will be mindful
when they cast their ballots as well.
We have to do what we can.
We have to do what we can, cuz we need to show support for one another.
No matter where we came from,
where we're from, what colors can we have?
Some powerful stuff there taking place, Karis.
Can you tell us a little bit more about
the incident itself that took place here today?
Yeah, so it happened a little after 6 in the morning.
Our understanding is that ICE enforcement agents
were chasing that individual, ran into
the back of his car.
That person got out of the vehicle and ICE
then pursued him on foot before he was taken
into custody.
He was taken to a hospital, as I mentioned.
We're working to learn more about his current condition.
We also know the district attorney's office has
been notified about this incident as well.
But at this point, it is unclear if any criminal charges will be filed.
Anthony.
The man you spoke to, did he mention
or speak at all to the fact that he's been paying attention
to the news and these ICE incidents and that impacted his vote at all?
He did mention the news, but he also mentioned his life experience.
He lived here in the Memorial Park neighborhood almost all
of his life after coming to this
country when he was a child and later gaining citizenship.
So it's not simply about hearing what's happening on the news,
it's about what's happening in
his community, including the death of Lorenzo.
And he said that specifically struck him,
and that is exactly why he wanted to not only
make sure he voted early,
but also that he came and left his sticker among the many others
that are here as well.
Anthony.
All right, Karis Belger, thank you so much for that report.
