France 24's correspondent, Gulliver Craig,
has more now on what came out of that meeting with Witkoff.
I mean, the only vaguely positive thing
is the Russians agreeing to trilateral talks,
though Steve Witkoff said that they would be of a technical nature.
And this came after there was talk of just having
a meeting between Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping of China
to decide on Ukraine's fate, amongst other things,
which Ukrainians reacted very angrily to.
of course, Volodymyr Zelensky being the first
to say we absolutely must have a seat at the table.
Generally, Ukrainians that I've been speaking
to these last four days are watching aghast at the
way Donald Trump seems to have really lined up behind Vladimir Putin.
Some think that this is
a final decision of his and that that is how it's going
to be and that he always was basically pro
Russia and now he's just decided to go all out for Russia.
Others are more optimistically hoping
that this has got something to do with the midterms,
perhaps that Donald Trump's behaviour
will change after the midterms,
perhaps that Donald Trump's party will lose the midterms so
catastrophically that he'll be impeached.
I mean, I think that it's not only in Ukraine that people
are beginning to think that that might
be something we ought to be hoping for, given the way
the president and not only the president
which is something Ukrainians are increasingly worried
about but also people around him including Marco Rubio
the Secretary of State Steve Witkoff of
course you know seem to be saying things
that uh first seem to support Russia secondly as Steve
Witkoff was saying yesterday
which outraged people in Ukraine that seemed to be treating Vladimir
Putin not as a war criminal
but as a humanitarian that was the word uh that he used and uh all this
kind of pro-Russian slant is one thing.
And the other thing is that it is so divorced from reality.
The things that both Donald Trump
and many of the people in his administration are saying
don't correspond to what's going on in Ukraine at all.
It's very, very easy to point out the factual flaws
in their statement.
