I'm your host, Lori Pinson, and we are discussing this morning,
let me just bring my guest in,
Kelly Robinson, a former police officer
who also happened to deal drugs.
We discussed his story, the name of his book is Forgiven Too.
The second part will tell you where you can get your copy of it.
Very descriptive and detailing his addiction with cocaine,
how he processed working in
the police department with all of the things
that go along with that um but where we left off Kelly
was uh you have delivered your cocaine
to the drug dealers you have been paid your two thousand
dollars and someone's knocking at the door it could either
be you were being robbed or you were
being raided which one was it yes um talk about adrenaline rush
your heart boom boom i could feel
my heart beating in my chest i jumped up
and i took the closest place i could find which was behind
the door when the door swung open boom it hit the tip
of my boots my steel toe boots and i could see
the name on the back of the jackets FBI
and so your heart sank my heart sunk it did um i had
three weapons on me which i always had
when i'm delivering drugs and i had money and they came in
they searched the whole house they couldn't find me
and I'm thinking you guys you look behind the
door did you try to get out past well you couldn't
though because in the book there were people there
were officers outside there were officers outside
so did you flash your badge I mean oh my gosh when
I saw that you were a police officer what happened
well I I uh I stood there and then finally I just
said here I am I surrendered I came out from behind the door
and immediately they uh they
cuffed me and asked me did i have any weapons
and you know 357 and nine millimeter 38 on my ankle
did you know them from the other departments did they know
who you were i did not know them
they knew who i was oh so they knew that you
were a police officer they had me under surveillance
for some time uh and and other police officers
also um and that was the beginning of the end
They took me down to the federal building.
They explained everything to me.
They told me about other police officers that told on me.
And I'm thinking, we have a code of blue. We don't tell on each other.
You know, and so I it was it was a turmoil,
just a smorgasbord of thoughts going through my head.
And of course, the first one was my family.
What is my wife going to think when she find this out?
They wanted me to cooperate with them for a year. I did.
I went to work as a police officer cooperating
with the police I mean with the FBI um to
undercover you know just a few police officers that I knew
who told on me first because our
code of blue was violated and um I did I cooperated long story short
with that um I was I was promised
I was facing 20 years to life in prison for the amount
of drugs that was uh federal sentencing
guidelines, the amount of drugs that I was captured with.
Um, but they promised me six
years if I cooperated. So I, I, um, I did cooperate.
Um, we eventually moved out of
New York, uh, moved to another state and I,
uh, went back to get sentenced. By this time,
it was a transformation in my life.
God began working in my life, doing things in my life
that I never thought would happen.
Uh, he changed me. Um, and, uh, when I went back
to get sentenced. I was somewhat nervous.
Were you clean? I was clean. Oh, yes, I was clean.
And I was terrified going home. And I began to pray about it.
I said, oh, God, I don't want to
do this. And he gave me a piece about it.
And when I went home, I said, God, if I have to do life,
I'm going to serve you. If I have to do 20 years,
I'm going to serve you. If I if I have to do two
years, I'm going to serve you. Whatever it is,
I'm going to serve you for the rest of my life.
um got in front of the judge
and he said do you have anything to say before i pass sentence in it
and i said yes your honor i i asked god
to forgive me i asked my family to forgive me and at this
time i asked the court's forgiveness the judge said i've
been on the bench for 15 years i always
give jail time he said but it's time
for a change i sentence you to community service and probation
um i just said thank god for you i said
and your family probably was like oh my god so
Well, in the time that we have left, I know that you wanted to,
you talked about addiction and hope.
How do those two things go together?
What would you say to someone who's facing that choice of addiction?
And a lot of times, like you said, you were in a stressful situation.
They might not even listen.
Right.
They may already be embroiled in this.
Yes.
What would you say?
Well, I tell them that there is a way out.
The majority of people that are using drugs
do not want to be in the addiction.
They don't know how to get out of it.
It's something about you don't know what to do.
How do you stop using these drugs?
I eventually came home.
I told my wife, you have to be honest.
I told my wife, I came home.
I said, honey, I'm using cocaine.
And this woman who I've been married to for 40,
46 years now, I'm expecting her like she normally do.
Say, what's wrong with you?
You're a police officer.
Are you out of your mind?
Are you crazy?
You're using drugs, cocaine.
Are you?
She said, we have to get some help.
we have i'm gonna find some place i'm gonna get some help
and i was shocked and she was there and
i'm thinking what do you mean we i'm the one
that's using um and then she said you know are
you crazy you're a police you shouldn't be doing
this uh that was the road to recovery um the last
time i used it was june 1st i went and i bought a package
and i went to get another person this
not of this year no no no this was uh it's 1990
and 36 years queen now let me ask you this question
Yeah. Why did you write this book?
Who is this book for? Why did you write it?
Good question, because I I didn't want to write a book.
The last thing I wanted to do was reveal this thing.
I wanted to keep it under wraps.
I began working with the adult rehab center at a recovery center.
I was I was eventually a mailman. I was hired as a mailman,
even with a felony conviction, three felony convictions.
God opened the door for me to get on the postal service
and on my route was a drug addiction
rehabilitation center I'm going here talking to these guys
and they said maybe you can come in
and speak to these guys so I did
and then I began uh for years working with these men the most
rewarding thing I think to for these guys to know
that someone else has been through what they've
been, what they've been through.
Oftentimes, it's the person who's experienced certain things that
can help another person. People that don't know about it,
they don't know what to say. They don't
know how to react to it.
And that was huge for me, working with these guys. And they told me,
when I told them my story, you need to write a book.
Man, this is like a movie. I said, I'm not
writing a book. Writing a book? No way.
I'm not writing a book. And I began waking up at 4.30 in
morning and I'm like okay I'm praying there's something going
on and I didn't understand it
the next day 4 30 in the morning I'm like okay what's going
on God I mean um something I need
to check the third day 4 30 in the morning
and I went and I sat down in our office and I got a
computer and I hit the mouse and it woke up the computer
and there were my notes from everything
that happened I said oh wow
so in a little bit of time that we have left just a couple of minutes is
there anything that you want to add uh what first
of all where can people find your book
uh it is on Amazon okay you're giving to second power
um and um so what what would you like to
say you got roughly about a minute
and a half i think i want to give that time to you yeah
there's people out there that think there's no hope
and your loved ones you want to seek
counseling for them seek guidance talk to someone
in programs that can advise you on how to help
them without enabling them let them know you care
and doing things differently and expecting you do
things the same you expect different results is insanity
so you want to do things differently
you want to approach it differently they know where they
are you have to show love show
understanding compassion and that you want what's best
for them you want them to recover you gotta
help them and pray about it pray about it thank you
so much for sharing your story with us i'm
glad that life has turned around for you
and maybe you're being used as an instrument to help other
people as well yes so it's a powerful story
because not often do we get to see the other side
uh we know that it's a stressful type of job
and you see like you said people getting robbed hurt
murdered every single day uh we hope that any police officers
or folks in public service who
are watching this aren't turning to those type
of um ways to to deal with it but we appreciate you
also sharing your story with us yes
so much kelly my pleasure i'm glad i can be of uh assistance and
uh there is hope there is hope
no matter how much you think there's no hope there's hope um seek
seek guidance and those that are using tell
the truth to someone you have to confide in someone
let them know someone you know you can trust confide
in them they'll be there to help you
Thank you so much. That's Lori's stories for today.
Thank you so much for joining us.
And as I always say, have a positive day.
