Demands for reform in the Detroit Police
Department reached a boiling point today
during two separate news conferences across the city.
Community members and activists called for increased transparency,
better accountability,
and the firing of DPD officers up to and including the police chief.
Fox News' Ingrid Kelly joins us live from Detroit.
Ingrid.
Well, you know, hey, Charlie, you know what?
The person who was actually shot, his name is Alonzo Lee Perkins.
He's a Detroiter, and you know what? He maintains his innocence.
He says basically he was unlawfully approached
by Detroit police before being shot in the back.
And now activist groups,
they're demanding many things from that police department.
Tristan Taylor joins me now.
I understand you held a press conference earlier today.
Yes, correct. And we held that press conference
to put forward three most important demands.
One, we want the charges against Alonzo Lee Perkins dropped.
Two, we want the officer David Gonzalez fired.
And three, we also want him prosecuted for shooting unlawfully
and without reason Alonzo Lee Perkins as he was leaving.
Exactly. Now, we understand Alonzo
was not able to make the press conference.
But, you know, he's doing well.
He's back working and everything like that.
But you know what? He wants justice.
Talk to me a little bit about that.
And also, what was he doing leading up
to being stopped by those officers?
Well, he was just walking, and it was during the fireworks.
So like a bunch of young people in Detroit,
he came downtown to have fun.
And we think that that is not a crime.
And one of the things that's troubling
was the hysteria around the teen takeovers.
We think that that created an atmosphere
for Detroit police to act with more aggression.
Wow.
So talk to me a little bit about, I understand, no lawsuit just yet.
No.
We're right now just trying to deal with the criminal charges.
which again should not exist we think
is absolutely criminal the footage that was
released with the shooting just shows
the police officer calling Alonzo out of his name
following him aggressively as Alonzo is fleeing rightfully
so because he's afraid of what the
officer might do and the officer in fact did
do harm to him we're lucky that he's alive okay and
you know what I did reach out
to Detroit police they actually say an investigation is ongoing
right now and they released the statement which reads in part upon the
investigation's conclusion if misconduct
is identified the matter will be referred
to the disciplinary administration unit for review
and a determination of
whether disciplinary action is warranted back to you well I mean is the
protesters they're putting the cart before the horse I mean there is an
investigation and assuming the investigation goes in his favor that may
be the end of story.
Well, they just basically want to make sure that, you know, their voice
is heard even before that decision is made.
And I just want to make it clear, Tristan, also
basically during the Black Lives Matter movement,
you had your own basically case against Detroit
police. Yeah, for acting unlawfully
and going against the constitutional rights of protesters.
So this is not the first time that they stepped out
of their bounds. Okay, back to you, Charlie.
All right. Thank you, Ingrid, for that report.
