Would you live in a cemetery? 👻 A unique rental opportunity in Brookline is drawing attention for its unusual location and one big catch. Boston 25 News takes a closer look at the property and what it means to call this place home.
Local cemetery has a unique job listing.
They're looking for a cemetery caretaker
and that person would live right there on the property.
Boston 25 news reporter Ellie Murillo live in Brookline.
Ellie, this role wouldn't be treated like a regular job, would it?
No. And look, this home is located in one
of the most expensive housing markets in Massachusetts.
I mean, take a look. This home is beautiful. But let's just say
your neighbors and I'm going to take viewers for a little walk here.
Let's just say they're not the talkative type.
Now, the price tag might catch your attention,
but living here does come with some unusual responsibilities.
Walnut Hill Cemetery dates back to 1875,
spanning 45 acres.
Tucked inside is this single-family home.
The starting rent, $1,600 a month.
But before you start packing, there's a catch.
It wouldn't bother me at all to live here.
The person selected would serve as the cemetery's caretaker
with some responsibilities a week.
That includes helping open and close the cemetery gates.
You'd also be responsible for utilities,
including costs associated with the attached cemetery office.
Walking through it, I just look at it
as a part of history because it's New England.
So you read the headstones, they're people from the 1700s.
Melanie Jennings says she's walked the cemetery's trail for years,
calling it peaceful,
even sharing moments with the previous caretaker on the property.
Did he ever tell you about his experience here?
No, no. We just sat and talked about my dog,
my golden retriever, and he enjoyed himself.
He used to sit out here on the bench and chat. It was lovely.
Melanie says people should consider the perks.
Yes, it's beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
While others aren't so sure.
I just think because it's a cemetery
and I totally believe in ghosts and spirits.
I'm way too freaked out about that type of stuff,
but I think that's pretty cool.
And I think someone should do that.
Now look, this would be a three-year agreement,
and if you are interested, you have to submit a formal proposal
and just how much you're willing to pay.

Listen, cost of living these days,
I think people will get their resumes ready. Ellie, thank you.
