Mascagni - Cavalleria Rusticana: Intermezzo | Orquesta Reino de Aragón, Ricardo Casero

Performed by Orquesta Reino de Aragón
Conductor: Ricardo Casero
Composed between 1888 and 1889 for Mascagni’s one act verismo opera Cavalleria rusticana, premiered in 1890, the Intermezzo is the most celebrated orchestral page of the work: a brief, luminous interlude that unfolds while the stage is empty, between the two dramatic halves of the opera. The music draws on themes heard earlier in the opera’s religious scenes, especially the “Regina Coeli” and an earlier “Ave Maria”, and turns this sacred material into a purely instrumental meditation, evoking both the peace of the Sicilian village and the intense, unresolved emotions of the protagonists.
The piece opens with a delicate, suspended texture: the strings, often supported by harp and organ, introduce a serene, floating melody in a high register, creating an atmosphere of quiet reverence. A second, more expansive theme, also carried by the strings, unfolds with growing warmth and intensity, building toward a broad, singing climax before the music fades into a gentle, consoling close. Mascagni’s writing is economical yet deeply expressive: the focus on strings, harp and organ gives the interlude a luminous, almost sacred sound, while the absence of voices and the stillness of the stage heighten the feeling of suspended time.
The power of the Intermezzo lies in its contrast with the drama around it: it offers a moment of lyrical rest and spiritual reflection before the tragedy resumes, and this makes its serenity all the more moving. Its memorable melody, transparent orchestration and emotional directness have made it a favorite in concert halls and film scores alike, and it remains one of the most iconic examples of verismo’s ability to capture intense feeling in a few minutes of pure, singing orchestral beauty.
