Video Summary
AI GeneratedJane Taylor Natt documents her process of knitting a Sophie scarf using hand-spun merino and bamboo yarn. Over a weekend, she navigates adjustments in needle size, shifts her project goals from a scarf to a shawl and back, and balances the project with other fiber arts like spinning.
Good morning, good evening, good afternoon,
wherever you are, whenever you're watching this,
welcome to the channel, it is amazing to see you.
I am Jane Taylor Natt, my name is Natt.
Today I have a free weekend basically,
so I have most of today to just knit,
and then most of tomorrow if I need it to just knit too.
So I thought, because I'm not busy
and I'm not doing anything how about we start knitting up
this wow I don't know if you can see the fluff that just came out
I don't think it's fluff it's obviously fiber
that's what makes this house this area so like
it there's constantly bits of fluff um it's
because of all the spinning I do um these two
skeins I hand spun myself and these are made with merino
and bamboo and then now we can get on to
making a Sophie scarf with these. So I have two as I say.
I can't actually remember the meterage.
I do know that this one has slightly less meterage than this one
so I am going to knit
the Sophie scarf until I finish this first hank
and then decrease the rest of it.
I can't remember what weight these are.
I think this is an Aran weight potentially.
DK to Aran weight yarn depending
on where you're looking at it from. That's just my
my thoughts looking at it that's not the actual amount
but I also don't really care um just as
long as this works so that is the plan today I don't really want
to waste much time I want to
use as much time as I've got to knit
this the only thing that I have on today is I'm getting
my hair cut which is why my hair looks a little bit of a mess today
because I have tried to prepare
a wee bit for getting it cut um so if at some point
in this video my hair is shorter and looks
different don't mind it it's just because it got cut
or it's getting cut so yes this
will be my
Sophie scar
and let's get
on please
excuse
the mess that
is for here
I decided
before
I actually cast on I would double check what
this is and this I think comfortably comfortably fits
in a worsted weight
so I'm thinking I'm still going to do the Sophie scar however what I'm
going to do is instead of doing it in a 3.5 mil i
am going to do it in a 4 mil um because i think
there's still some squish to it
and i think i should probably swap i'm going to start off with
a 4 and see how it goes i will not swatch not properly
but i will start off see how it goes
if i need to move a 4.5 i'm going to 4.5
that's me now just buying the pattern so i should from here
be able
to just start
now so we
are now an
hour in i did
actually get
to about here
and then go
so i was like 20 rows in or something like that and then
when i need it um i needed bigger needles
so i have swapped to 4.5 needles
so it's still going to be a bit denser but i think that's
working you can't really see the inconsistencies
of the yarn that much um maybe you can if you look
at the i-cord but on the actual thing i don't think there's much
of a difference so far um as
i say that's taking me about an hour
but i did have to frog from here and then redoing like the
first 20 rows again and i am about 60 rows
in so not too bad uh with it being merino there's a
little bit of itch but nothing like shockingly
so um i'm not sure if white is for me um so the
option is for me either to gift this or to dye it
but we'll see how it turns out because I'm not
entirely sure how big it's going to be.
This is how much I've still got left for doing the increases
so we'll see how that goes
and then I'll have all of this for doing the decreases so that's about
200 grams of yarn but I can't remember as I say the yardage on it.
I'm sure it was bigger than
Sophie's scarf but smaller than Sophie's shawl
so I thought I would just get the Sophie's scarf
and then just as I say knit on.
I don't really have much to say. The I-cord has wee moments
where it hurts my hand, nothing exceptional.
I've tried to be looser with how I knit the I-cord
just because I don't particularly want
to be having any trouble with my hands while I'm knitting
but because I am an hour in it is now about 20 to 11
so I am going to take a wee break
I'm going to go and edit a video and we'll see what's what.
I never have to use a row counter
to count my rows however I find it quite difficult
with this to know where I am because the I-cord
obviously is you only knit it every second row
and the garter stitch each purl bump is two rows
i suppose i could probably figure it out
because i'd have about 30 like well not garter bumps but
like um 30 i-cord stitches on either side but i
am just finding it easier to use my roll counter
on my ipad that i'm using with loose loop
and just going from there i will come back to you
when I have
done two
hours. See
you later.
So this has
pretty
much just
become a
couch vlog
I think
at this point and right now I've just realized
that without the blanket behind me I'm merging
into the couch. Let me show you my two hours of progress.
So here is where we are now. I've done
approximately 30 centimeters in length
and it's actually the width of the smallest size now so
we're at like 11 centimeters across but bear in mind my gauge is off.
I think my gauge is like
16 stitches along which means it's closer to the shawl
and this is how much I've still got left of
the first ball with all of the second ball still to go.
So I'm thinking if I want to use this all
up I might be worth just doing Sophie's shawl.
This does mean it's not going to be finished today
which was kind of my thought process was hey let's
do a day-long project however it does mean
I'll probably finish it still this weekend
as I mentioned at the start of this video I have
two days that are pretty empty the only thing I have going
on is getting my hair cut today
other than that nothing so yeah this is about 30 centimeters
which means it is not as long
gauge-wise as the Sophie scarf I think we're gonna go
and wing it to make it a shawl type thing
that is my update because it's gonna be the shawl I don't know
if I'm gonna do an hourly update like
I was doing um I think I'm just gonna continue until I reach halfway
and then maybe speak to
you guys
then. I know
I said the
plan was to
finish it
this
weekend.
I have done
almost
nothing
to this. I did a little bit earlier
but you're talking like I barely made it and then
and then the decreases. So that is a plan now.
I instead actually spent about six hours
sat in front of my spinning wheel
and managed to finish up spinning my first fleece that I had. It
was only 100 grams and honestly I it's a questionable one
but I've spun them up I'm
not plying them now so I can focus on my knitting
but here's what they are they are Leicester long
wheel and you can't see it unless you're looking
at them I don't think you can see it on camera
these look really like silver they're so silvery
um like the luster on them is amazing um however
I spent about five or six hours on that I'm gonna say
that part of the reason I didn't do much
next day is my finger was really sore
so last night I started a test knit a color work test
knit that I'm doing and it's at fingering weight
and I think the tension I had was really like
pressing on my finger because for ages today
and last night my finger was quite sore um it's almost
like it needs to pop like i can't crack my fingers
but it feels like it needs to crack
essentially so i took a bit of a break
and got really fixated on doing my leicester long wheel
because i had figured out i'm not gonna like
the whole of this week until today it's not clicked
for me what i need to do i've been trying things
and i'm like this might be it but um something
always fell off but today I managed to just sit down sort it.
It is now half
four on Sunday evening I am gonna try my best
and see how quickly I can knit down
this but I don't think we are finishing it this weekend.
It is what it is but yeah I
thought I owed you guys this update
considering I have done nothing since
this morning and that's just sometimes it's
a way of it I mean I don't know what to tell you
that is just sometimes the way of it
so i'm gonna do this i will catch you when i've made some
progress
okay
bye
i'm
taking
obligatory
croissant
bowl
what
else
do
you
do
with
a
sophie
scarf
for
sure um i've not tried it on yet
but it has been blocked this is probably the way i am going to
have to style it but i can keep focusing
or mark it with my lip balm if i'm really cold i can just
take this snuggle myself up yeah here is how it
is could have done with being a wee bit longer
yeah happy with this this will keep me
warm enough but also is compact enough
that when I fold it up it's that size like it's
not big it's not like any of my big
bulky ones so there we go here is what is left
so I'm going to use this I keep
saying about in a color work like I have a color work plan
but I will probably be
using this in some sort of color work.
I have more information on that.
That is all. I hope you've
enjoyed. I'm not sure if this video is long
or short at the time of editing it and putting all
of the clips together.
We're sat at like 50 minutes but I'm hoping this video is not much
longer than 20 minutes in the end. So I love you and Louise.
I hope you enjoyed. Please let me know
what you've been working on down below.
Have you made a Sophie scarf? What did you make a Sophie
scarf in? Obviously mine is merino and bamboo
but I want to know what everybody else has put them
in probably people have done them in cashmere
and for that I'm jealous if you enjoyed this video
also please make sure to like and subscribe
because it lets me know that you're enjoying
these videos and if you want to see me more
