After one week's therapy, I went out in the muck and the mud and the grime and the grit yesterday and collected among other things leaf mold which i have been dying to collect so here's here's i'll give you a play-by-play here's um here's father fish now this this is a a stream that... I like that ponytail. Yeah. Yeah, right. Keeps it out of my eyes. I'm going to lose weight. See that gut? That's going. That's going, going home. Right. By the end of the year, that's going to be down by 25 pounds. All right. You can do it. I'm going to get slim and fit again. All right. Okay, so here we go. Let's see if... Let's see if I can turn it on. Oh, God. This thing is, I don't even know how to turn this on. Come on. Honestly. There it is. Okay. All right. Here we go. Oh, no. This is an hour and a half away. Now, I'm walking in mud. This is about almost went over there. Caught myself with the net. This mud gets about two foot deep up to my knees. And so that's why I'm walking. Yeah, it's impossible to walk in. I'm sucking my foot out of the mud in order to take a step. I have booties on, which means they didn't pull off my feet. If I'd have worn tennis shoes, I'd have lost them. I'm trying to get over there. You can see over here, you can see the leaves laying on the bottom. That's what I'm after. Oh, yeah. One more step now. One more step, and I'll be there. You can do it. I can do it. I know I can. I know I can. You did do it. There it is. There's the step. There's the step. As it goes down and down. See how it goes down? You're getting deeper and deeper. Two inches of mud. Two feet, I mean. Down to my knees. I'm in mud up to my knees. But I got the leaves. And that's what I needed in order to be able to do the next video, which is to set up an aquarium with a food web. And I've now collected the last element that I needed for the food web. See how muddy it is? But it's a beautiful place. We got 50 Elasmobranch there yesterday. Oh, wow. Really magnificent. just absolutely amazing i discovered this place about a year ago i was driving down the road and i saw it and knew instantly that this is what i have been looking for for years it's two ditches running about 500 yards on either side of the road and it's running water and it has i've i've caught so far six different species of fish in it plus about about 10 different kinds of plants an enormous variety of plants so all right here we go now i found i found a walking stick there you go that and this is going to make it possible for me to get back otherwise i just go down and down forever it was what i went at the two foot level that shows an experience uh look at you now what i got to do is get rid of the net and the bucket so i'm going to throw them up on shore and i like that and here we go the return trip that's 81 years old there guys that's pretty tough and with the hip that gives you trouble yeah i tell you well the weight's the big killer i gotta get that weight off i started cardiac rehab uh this past week i've never been able to do that because i didn't have any strength in my legs now that's improving look at that is it up up and away all right man if i'm getting around if i'm even still here at 81 if i can get around like that i'm doing something you did a great job look at all right that i think you need that is fun that's a lot and i love when you share that that's really cool because that's things that some of us don't get to do or see so that's pretty cool i had so now we get to learn about the leaf litter so right exactly um i got a call from kyle who i met at Aquacella wants to go to go collecting so i'm back in touch so we'll see if we get a collecting trip up that would be fun all right chris travis here hey chris nice to see you mermaids chorus david j watch those ankle biters i know no leeches yet i'll tell you what happened though was there last week and i felt a burning on on the top of my foot and it just was aggravating and i just you know what do you do it burns so you know i just kept going i realized that evening it was fire ants. Apparently one, one fire ant bit a ring of about six bites in a circle. Well, you know, I learned a lesson years ago. When you get bit by a fire ant, what you do is leave it alone. You do not scratch it. You know you can put calamine lotion on it, or something, but you don't scratch it because it'll create an open wound that'll take forever to heal. So it's still better. You know what? It's actually it's almost gone. Ten days later. They make metal long poles. Yeah, well, I know. But it's not as exciting. It wouldn't be near as much fun. really well you know i had two nets there with six foot poles but they were big like three foot wide big net and i wanted a guy was i was aiming for something that i really i did not expect the mud that's what it was when i went in there it looked like this is going to be a breeze and it was anything but. I think there are a few Elasoma in there. but you never see them glory don't you worry about gators brad says or the snakes he is in well i'll tell you what i'm going out i'm going out um crabbing soon and i've got a yeah i've got a i got a picture here somewhere where in the world is oh here it is check this out so this So, this will drive you. You just have so much wildlife. uh jacob flaxton's asking a question yes you want me to read it sure go ahead said he added leaf litter to my top layer of sand tank has been set up for three weeks or so water is starting to brown a little probably from tannins releasing will this clear up over time as the tank matures yes that would be yeah where is it give me a time stamp on that oh i got it Jacob Claxton. Oh, let's see. Water's starting to brown a little. Yeah, well, it will, but it may not. You can clear it up by doing water changes. But tannin water is actually very healthy water. If you're looking to keep tetras, live bearers, South American snakewoods, tannin water is really desirable. so don't feel like it's a negative it's not at all a negative it's really something that's very positive if it gets too dark and you don't like it just do some 10 15 percent water changes and you'll be able to get it back but it's not a problem don't worry about it uh brad says i I think I heard Mary say hard decoders. If you wanted to talk to them about the dying fish in a wall stud the other day, what is he referring to? I don't know if he's talking about maybe something that came up in a chat the other day, but he also, Brad, put in the Discord link. I don't know when it was. Chris Trapp, around what year did commercial fish food show up, Father Fish? Well, gee, you know what? The very first manufacturer that had any kind of national distribution was Wardley. And Wardley started in about the 1930s. So they've been around almost 100 years. They're in their 10th decade. So it'll be 100 years shortly. And this is a brand new. I mean, they're still around. They're still manufacturing. In fact, when I moved to Florida in 1991, they had a large distribution center where they were wholesaling the complete spectrum of pets. I don't think they had dogs, but they might have. They had all of the small rodents, hamsters, rats, mice, chinchillas, guinea pigs. They had all of that. They had birds, a wide range of birds, lots of finches, parakeets, canaries, big birds as well. And they had fish. Now, I don't know if they were doing saltwater. They were doing freshwater. And they had a huge operation. The year I moved to Florida, they dismantled that entire facility and moved their manufacturing, which was a separate component. I think it was already located in New Jersey. They just shut down the Florida operation, got rid of all the animals, got out of animals altogether. I had friends who got magnificent birds, and they had been there a long, long time. So they had developed some things that were really kind of exciting. The buildings are still there. It's been 30 years later. Their ramshackle, of course, just fallen down, and a lot of greenhouses and buildings that no longer have roofs. But I didn't get in there. I got here just as they were leaving and never really got a chance to see the operation. But that was Wardley. My grandmother, my grandmother fed Wardley fish food. That's really where I remember it from, from my childhood in the 40s. She had a little tin of Wardley fish food. A man bug. Lady Diane said she had that forever. Hard to code her. There was anacharis and water sprite. And that was it. You either got anacharis or you got water sprite. And then the next one that came along was Valisneria. So then there was Valisneria. Now we had three. Now we could actually design a tank. I'll tell you what, with what's happening, I have a farmer I work with who ships in from Holland and other places around the world. So he gets everything. He's a pretty high-end guy. And I'm just constantly astounded. at the incredible variety of plants that are available. His normal availability is probably, I don't know, I want to say 250 to 300 different species of plants at any one time. It's just amazing. Plus, he does bog plants on top of that. He does insectivore plants, whatever they're called. um he does some he does some air plants um you know so he just has an enormous variety of stuff so i can get lilies from him i get bog plants and i get stuff for people's ponds yeah great supplier just got me a new plant oh that's what whose is that i have that book i think i have that book. I don't know where it is. I'm just looking at my I do somewhere. I have lost track of my library. It is a nice book. It's a great book. I just miss sitting down with a book and just you know, like looking at pictures and reading. I can look on the internet all day but there's just something different about reading. It's a great way to learn too, you know, because you can refer back. What do you got there? If you've got any number of fish in a tank, you really have to be sensitive to having adequate oxygenation and you may not be able to have a tank without any mechanical device unless you've got a lot of plants and a few fish. You can do it, but you can't have a lot of fish. That's very nice. It's actually very pretty I like it. What size is it? I guess it's approximately 16 to 17 gallons. Three and a half. it's kind of square nice tank and a 15 watt light oh yeah it is so there's one more thing I figured out actually as the temperature increases the plants I guess tend to grow fast yeah you're doing well it's very nice thank you so much thank you Thank you so much. I had to go to work the last few days. my son it's an early start for me like five o'clock so yeah you are you're a work yeah you're a real workaholic oh you've just you got so much going on i don't have the energy to do it anymore that's a young man's habit he's just out trouncing around in the waterways in mud get gluttony yeah i did a little video earlier of of a trip we took yesterday out to a mud hole where i collected leaf litter and it was it was great fun let's see if we can pop it up again maybe oh lady diane look at father fish malik watch this man go i mean i mean i'm in two foot of mud and a foot of water i was catching i had to get leaf litter so i could do something i'm trying to put together I'm trying to put together a food web tank and I needed leaf litter so that's what I was after and I was able to get some and I did it without falling in which is amazing. Well the mud was up to my knees. It looks like it's beyond your knees now. Yeah, six inches of water and two feet of mud. I would be scared to do that actually. And there's the last step. Yeah, me personally now I would be like, no, I'm not doing that. Well, I did not expect it. It just kind of came upon me there I got the leaf there it is that's what I went for I've got a net full of leaves Pardon, are you in Louisiana because it looked like it I'm in Florida okay that makes sense Florida looks like Louisiana yeah they're kind of interchangeable in a lot of ways plus he's Dodging alligators and pythons and different stuff. Did I show you the alligator? Where's the alligator? Yeah, I was catching blue crabs, and I had this guy beat me to it. I would not let you walk no more. After you showed me the last time, I'm getting in the water now no more. Oh, it's great fun. it's great fun well we've run over guys we need to say goodbye hang in Malik don't go away you can stay in there too Mary but we're going to run big city better there she is yep Amber what is she talking about oh I think her Facebook got hacked it was kind of bad that was not from amber oh dear david j hello david hey sunset jan jason sear craig doniger he said he had a craig earlier i think that's it have we got everybody yeah we've run over guys we're gonna we're gonna run i'll be here it's 5.30 Sunday evening.
