At 12th and Jackson, relentless drug use
and crime are forcing businesses to make some tough choices.
Fox 13's Dan Griffin talked with one man who is taking a chance where
others have ultimately opted to leave, but even he has his doubts.
Four months ago, Mayor Katie Wilson's office promised
a new approach to address drugs and crime at 12th and Jackson.
But in that time, businesses have said things haven't gotten better
and some have decided to move on.
I hope it to getting better in the future.
So I like give it a try.
Oscar Hsu moved in this month
at the former Henry's Taiwan Kitchen at 12th and Jackson.
The old signs are still up,
but the 28-year-old hopes his Chinese fusion spot,
Sweet Intentions Eatery, will succeed in his first ever location.
He operates delivery only for now.
I don't feel very safe. Of course, I have to park my car
in front of my restaurant and I keep my eye on my car.
Four months after the mayor's office pledged
to tackle crime and drug dealing here,
Hsu says the trouble remains obvious.
We saw Seattle police in the area.
Last week, there was one guy.
He tried to throw things through the window, just behind the window.
I was in the kitchen, but I heard the sound, so I came out.
It's jarring, but he's not giving up.
His message to the mayor, support this neighborhood.
We don't want to see any like smokings or drugs around this area.
We see a lot of restaurants close in this plaza.
Now we have asked the mayor's office
for any data that may show how many arrests or
diversions have happened since June.
As we get that new information, we will update our reporting
on fox13seattle.com and the Fox local app.
At City Hall, Dan Griffin, Fox 13 News.
