A novelist’s home should have a little romance, and Chatawa Cottage has it in abundance. Join us at 710 North Union Street in Natchez, Mississippi, for a look inside a house whose generous rooms and distinctive architectural details make “cottage” seem a rather modest introduction.

Dating to the turn of the twentieth century, Chatawa Cottage was home to Natchez novelist Alice Walworth Graham, whose books included The Natchez Woman, Indigo Bend and Lost River. Graham studied writing under Robert Penn Warren at Louisiana State University, and her fiction drew upon the history and imagined lives of the region she knew so well. Her family’s connections extend next door to The Burn, placing this house within a much longer Walworth family story.

Inside, hardwood floors and surviving historic mantelpieces give the rooms their character, while jib windows offer a particularly intriguing detail: these openings combine a raised window sash with small doors beneath, allowing passage between interior rooms and the porch. The spacious front porch and rear gallery extend the living spaces outdoors, overlooking grounds that feel remarkably expansive for a home so close to downtown Natchez. Renovated kitchens and bathrooms add another chapter to a house that has continued to evolve.

Come explore the details with Our Restoration Nation as we look beyond the listing and into the history of Chatawa Cottage. What does a house reveal about the people who called it home, especially when one of them made her living telling stories?
