US VS EU? EU Explores Emergency Measures to Protect Court | Times Now World
Oct 20, 2026
This is on the ICC, again.
The EU co-conclusions ask the Commission to prepare
for a potential activation of the Blocking Statute.
Yes, Antoine.
We in the European Union feel the same as Japan,
that obviously we want to do what we can to protect the Court's work.
And for the moment we have, as I said last week,
we're in contact with a number of the state parties to the Court
to see what practical measures we can put
in place in case the sanctions do go ahead.
And on that, from here, from the podium,
I don't want to go into the measures that are being explored,
but obviously the Dutch are very much leading on this work
in collaboration with the Commission and the other member states.
And I would imagine, but again,
I can't say with other parties to the ICC,
so things that can be done to protect the court's work
in case we arrive at the end of this six-month period
without any other alternative,
but the blocking statute still remains on the table, as we said.
So here it's still too early for us
to hypothesize about where we might end up,
but all options are on the table,
and blocking statute being one of them.
The right to peaceful protest is a fundamental right
in all democratic countries and must be protected.
Those who demonstrate peacefully must
not be conflated with those who commit violence.
Arson, looting and attacks on people
or public buildings are unacceptable.
We support the efforts of the French authorities to protect people,
property and public institutions
in full respect of fundamental rights.
It is national authorities that are competent
for law enforcement matters
and investigations are currently ongoing at national level.
We have another question for Markus there.
