Who are the looters? Are they politically motivated?
Thieves and opportunists? Black bloc activists?
On Sunday, police stations like this one in Bordeaux were under strain.
Over 2,300 people were detained.
Some for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Others for theft and looting.
These two students were just released.
People were smashing up stores
and handing out clothes and distributing them.
We took what was handed to us and left, and we got caught.
First, we were there to protest.
After 24 hours in police custody, you have time to think.
It was stupid. Normally, we never would have done that.
This young man was accused of breaking
into a luxury store on Saturday evening
while it was being ransacked.
I walked in and saw a beanie. I was tempted to take it, but I didn't.
There was a guy who was taking the whole shelf. His bag was full.
Since the riot police were there,
we didn't have the time to take the bag.
Sometimes the looting is more organized.
According to a police memo,
scouts often send word to vandals to come when the timing is right.
And the Interior Ministry claims that within
the throngs of peaceful protesters,
they identified individuals
who belong to groups that target government institutions.
They're on encrypted channels and message boards.
There are also in-person meetings,
as these are known associations and groups that have physical offices.
From there, they spread the word.
Word was also spread on social media.
In this TikTok live video, some users commented with instructions.
Don't do the shops, find and aim at state buildings.
And in this video, the target was even more specific.
7pm, everyone head to the Elysee in Paris,
spread the word, copy in all the lives, share everywhere.
According to France's Chamber of Commerce,
over 2,000 shops were impacted,
with damages in the hundreds of millions of euros.
The state is still assessing the impact to its institutions
and public spaces.
