He's investigating suspicious mail sent
to the Wisconsin Elections Commission,
Congresswoman Gwen Moore,
and now Fox 6 has learned Marquette University as well.
Jason Kelvey in the newsroom with what you need to know. Jason.
Kim and Ted, the FBI
and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are investigating and
trying to find the sender or senders.
The scare comes as Wisconsin gets ready for early voting
to kick off tomorrow. Fox 6 is first to report
that a suspicious mailing was sent to the Marquette
University Law School poll.
The Milwaukee Fire Department hazmat crew responded, and the
university tells me the tests found nothing dangerous.
Congresswoman Gwen Moore already
said her office in Milwaukee received mail
with a suspicious substance. She says mail will no
longer be sorted at that office.
And the Wisconsin Elections Commission says it, too, received
suspicious mail with a powdery substance on Wednesday,
and it, too, was deemed to not be
dangerous. Obviously, this kind of event has
no place in Wisconsin elections. Wisconsin election
officials are very busy preparing for the election,
but we won't let this kind of thing
be a disruption, but also know that we are very well trained
and prepared for these types of
things and that we have been for the last few years.
And so I don't think that this shook
anybody because we're ready for these types of things.
And I'm just getting some breaking news
here on my phone from the office
of Representative Mark Pocan in Madison.
They say they did receive a suspicious piece of mail,
came to their downtown Madison office today.
It was close in appearance to the other letters received by offices,
including Congresswoman Gwen Moore, recognized as such.
The statement says it was not opened
and the Madison Fire Department was called
and responded along with a hazmat team.
Initial tests on site came back negative.
Again, nothing dangerous.
And just a reminder that early voting kicks
off tomorrow across Battleground, Wisconsin.
You can check with your local clerk for hours.
Milwaukee will open 11 sites.
The State Elections Commission says
if you're returning an absentee ballot by mail,
they urge you to put it in the mail by tomorrow
to give it enough time for it to get back to your local clerk.
Otherwise, you can check with your clerk about dropping it off.
And Milwaukee does have 15 absentee ballot drop boxes,
including at all library branches.
