Brewers win NLCS: Coach Pat Murphy speaks

You know, if a team comes into this team and beats them four straight, it doesn't mean we're going to, but it means we're capable. How does this team, you know, a team can fold up when Joey hits a home run like that. You know how teams, any sport. You guys, not even this game, all games, you guys always seem to pull it together. How do you guys not let it just deflate? That's it. The response is what it's all about. You know, in sport, you know, I use the analogy all the time of boxing. you know when you get hit you can't say oh my and go to the corner and say hold on a second hold on a second you know oh this is awful oh this is terrible why do i do this you have to take the hit and maybe not even let the guy know that he hurt you and then you got to step back in and respond and maybe you're shaken up maybe you need to take a knee but you definitely get up and you finish the fight and i mean i think these guys have shown that i'm just so proud to be part of them you've been around the city milwaukee for a long time now and you may have been asked this so I'm sorry if I'm repeating it, but what does it mean to be able to deliver a World Series to those fans and to that city? Yeah, I mean, I don't look at it that way, you know, that I did anything. I look at it like I'm proud to be part of it. I look at the guys, and they'll be remembered forever. They're not going to remember me. They're going to remember the guys. They're going to remember Contreras and Yelich and Ashby, you know, and Jake Bowers and Miz, you know, but they're not going to remember me. you know what I mean, that comes and goes. But 50 years from now, they'll have something to sit back and go to a game and look at it and say, wow, you know, I was part of that team in 2026. What does it mean that national audience will now get to know these guys and hear their different stories? Yeah, I hope so. I mean, their stories deserve to be told, but, you know, you get one shot at it sometimes, you know, and what's important right now is they grow as individuals, become great dads, you know what I mean, great husbands, great friends, great sons, and that this helps them understand the importance of that because it's about family, and this team is like a little family, and they'll stick together for years to come, I promise. What do you think Yuke would say about tonight and this team right now? Yeah, he'd be so happy for the guys, and those who knew him well, they're all thinking about Yuke today because uh he he helped us you know he knocked that ball down in that first game to let us know that he was there and he was watching so his presence was known and uh yeah i'm happy i'm really happy because i know he's up there smiling we talked about family what does it mean when you saw everybody go to their families pick up their kids hug their significant other i mean that's it you know i mean that's that's what this whole thing's about A lot of families persevere. A lot of families go through a lot to go through a major league season. You know, it's not just six months of the season. It's an extra month for the postseason, and it's two months of spring training. And a lot of times that's, you know, nine months out of the season, and that's a lot of travel, and that's a lot to put up with and take your kids and take them out of school, the travel. It's hard to put it all together and keep it together, and that makes these guys even more special. Pat, when you took over three seasons ago, Could you have imagined being in this spot? Yes. Why? Because that's what I believe in. I believe that you can pull a group of guys together and you get a bunch of gamers that believe in winning baseball and believe in standards, and I believe they can do whatever they set out to do. And they're learning that lesson right now. But you've got to stay the path. And it may not be easy, and it may not happen, but it's in there to happen. Was there a moment in time you knew this team had it? I mean, every team says at spring training they're going to win it all but but we didn't say that okay was there a point this year we just talked about you know understand what it means and the discipline it takes to be in the now and then do the things winning baseball things and hopefully you just keep your head down and then someday they tap you on the shoulder and say hey the season's over you know there's no more games and hopefully you've accomplished something we don't talk i never talked about wins i never talked about championships i never talked about World Series didn't mention the word only talked about one thing getting your head down and keep going keep responding relentlessly quickly keep responding and they're going to tap you on the shoulder and say hey no more games go take a rest get ready for next year and hopefully at the end of that you can look up and it says Milwaukee Brewers World Champs that's a that's what we're thinking of thank you thank you
