In just five days, the Brewers start game one of the World Series.
It has been more than four decades since
the last time the team was in this spot.
And tonight, one Brookfield man says he holds
a special connection to that 1982 moment.
Our Derontae Matthews is in the newsroom with his story.
Derontae?
Hey, Christina.
There is no question to whether Marvin Barthoff is a Brewers fan.
In fact, his whole family is.
But one person who may have him beat was his younger brother, Bobby,
whose life has a link to the Brew Crew's World Series run then and now.
Milwaukee, the scene for Game 3 of the 1982 World Series.
October 1982, the Milwaukee Brewers enter the World Series.
Everybody was there. I mean, it was so crowded.
Marvin Barthoff was there for Game 3
when the Brewers faced the Cardinals.
It brings back a lot.
But to him, the best part
of the day happened just moments before the game started.
I was just so proud of my little brother at that time.
This was his 17-year-old brother, Bobby Barthoff,
throwing the ceremonial first pitch.
He was so happy just to get out of the hospital.
Marvin says when Bobby was 13,
his younger brother was diagnosed with leukemia.
He says before the 1982 World Series, Brewers pitcher Don Sutton
met Bobby at Children's Hospital and the two became friends.
He says Bobby's fight encouraged the team on its way
to the World Series, leading to Bobby throwing the first pitch.
That is the ball that he threw out.
Signed, encased, and preserved.
Now a treasured memory as just eight days later.
He was 17. He wasn't even 18 yet.
Bobby passed away.
I miss him. I miss him.
And knowing that he was so happy at that time.
But Marvin still keeps his brother
by his side whenever he watches a Brewers game.
Even more so this year, now that nearly 44 years later,
the Brewers are going back to the World Series.
Games Marvin says he won't be able to see in person.
The price of tickets nowadays is a lot.
Whether watching in person or on the screen, he's wishing for a win,
hoping a few guardian angels can shine a light on the brew crew.
There are two Bobs up in heaven,
my little brother Bobby and Bob Uecker.
And I think it would just mean
so much to both of them to just pull it off.
In game one of the World Series is this Friday, October 23rd.
Marvin says that will be 44 years
to the day his brother Bobby passed away.
October 23rd, 1982. In the newsroom, Derontae Matthews, Fox 6 News.
Wow, what incredible timing
with that that you just said there,
to the date almost that his brother passed away. I know he's
not going to the game, but did he say what he's doing
for the first game? Of course, he says he's
going to be watching, but unfortunately,
because these ticket prices are so steep nowadays, he
won't be able to attend in person.
Yeah, something we've heard from a lot of Brewers fans. Maybe
they'll go down. We'll keep an eye on it. Derontae, thanks so much.
