AI Generated·May contain errors
to register to vote in the midterm elections.
KTVU's Amanda Quintana is in Martinez now to
explain this process and also tell you why if you don't register today,
you can still vote.
Good morning, Amanda. Good morning, yes.
So today is technically the last day to register to vote
online, but there is a safety net just in case you forget today
or for whatever reason you don't get
online today to do that,
you do have other options to make sure that you can vote in that
November 3rd election. So that would mean
that you would have to conditionally register to vote and
you have to do that in person
and then you would fill out a provisional ballot. Now with this
process, your ballot will be counted once
your county elections office has verified your
information. So if you miss today's online deadline,
you still have 14 days to make sure
you can vote. But again, you have to go in person
to a voting site to do that. We are now two weeks
out from election day
and early voting already started two weeks ago here in California.
Everyone already registered should have received
their mail-in ballot already as well. You currently
have three options to turn those in.
You can mail them in, you can drop them off at a drop box, or
you can go to an early voting location.
Now, according to the State Registrar of Voters,
More than 89% of Californians
who voted in the June primary cast their ballot by mail.
So, if that is you, remember to do things a little earlier.
These ballots can be long in some areas,
so make sure you're filling it out,
paying attention to all of that, and getting it in the mail early.
For now, live in Martinez, Amanda Quintana, KTVU Fox 2 News.
All right, Amanda, thank you.
And to talk more about this, we're joined now by David McEwen,
our political science professor
from Sonoma State hey David good morning good morning Dave happy
Monday happy Monday this is this is a key day
the last day to register talk about that and talk
about the races we should be focusing on yeah i meant
to add a nice lead in there i mean look
there are three ways to cast your ballot
if you've received your ballot obviously you can mail it
you can have it in a drop box you can take it to uh
then put it through the mail uh many voters
though are worried about the processing through the mail
so many voters are going to actually
even though they're voting by mail normally they're going
to actually go drop off their
ballot for example at a ballot box uh as we look
at key races obviously in the bay area some key
races would be CD11 that would be the race
to replace Nancy Pelosi between uh between Wiener
and Chan if you look at CD14 that's
the Eric Swalwell replacement where Aisha Wahab won the
special election is currently fulfilling
his term running against uh melissa
hernandez there's some down ballot races
that are hugely important uh i'm gonna talk about kind of
the lead in there on what happens for some
of these regional races look uh there's measure rtm
that's the regional transit measure about
in five bay area counties there's a lot of local measures
for schools for libraries
for what happens within counties there's some down ballot races in the
insurance commissioner that no one's really
paying attention to, but it's really hugely
important in California. And then you've got 14
ballot measure propositions, obviously headed by
the battle over Proposition 40.
So all of those mean that you have to make a plan to vote.
To do that, you can go to different resources
and find out about different positions. And also,
you can pay attention to areas and websites like vote411.org.
You want to turn your ballot in
early. You want to have a plan to vote
because this is a very important midterm election.
and we have to vote david you tell them
so if you got if you do not register just to be clear
if you don't register by today there is something
that you can do to be a part of the process
that's correct david if you haven't registered
by today what you can do is you can go to your
county registrar's office or you can go to a voting facility
or a voting center you can ask
to cast a conditional
or place a conditional ballot that's really called a provisional ballot
You're voting provisionally upon having
that information you've provided verified.
So there is a mechanism for this.
And also, if you have one of your vote-by-mail ballots,
you need that postmarked by Election Day as well.
So that combination of being able to cast
a provisional always exists here in California.
We're very much about encouraging people to vote.
And if you vote by mail, make sure you have a plan to get
that in well before the postmarked deadline of Election Day itself.
So now, you know, the main thing David McInnis says,
you have to register to vote.
Got it. You got it.
All right. David McInnis, our political
science professor from Sonoma State.
Always good to see you on Mornings on 2. Pleasure to join you.
All right, David.
