A smashed window, a store ransacked in Marseille's old port.
Inside, rioters destroyed electronic equipment,
leaving this shopkeeper and his employees powerless.
Life has become so hard with the rising cost of living,
but I can't condone destroying people's livelihoods.
I have eight employees supporting their families.
Now they face temporary layoffs with bills to pay.
What's happening in France's economy is incomprehensible.
On Saturday, a local police station was targeted,
which, according to the mayor of Marseille,
was understaffed during the demonstration.
In the wake of the damage,
Benoit Péin is demanding answers from the government.
I don't have the words to describe what I never
would have imagined experiencing in this city.
Rioters and looters attacked what
is most precious to us, our public property.
They attacked a city hall, they attacked a police station,
they attacked law enforcement,
They attacked high school students.
I'm demanding that the truth be brought to light.
Péan also questioned the figure of 30,000 rioters
reported by the prefecture of Bouches-de-Rhône,
calling it far-fetched.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez is expected in Marseille on Monday,
where he'll meet with the mayor and local police.
