MMQB podcast in a minute.
I'm here with Gilberto Manzano, Connor Orr from Sports
Illustrated and the MMQB.
The Jameis Winston experience, we talked a lot about it. Jameis
Winston joked about it.
It reared its head today with two picks, but then we got J.J. McCarthy
leading one of the more spirited comeback attempts,
Gil, I think I've seen all season.
Did he earn the QB one job from here on out?
I think so, Connor. I honestly forgot that J.J.
McCarthy was playing for the New York Giants
but uh Jameis Winston was you know he was a roller
coaster he plays well then you forget about
the backup yeah this guy's the guy uh why did nobody
else pick him up and then boom the roller coaster goes on the way down
so uh yeah two interceptions
you had to pull him and then you go back
and you start thinking why did Harbaugh bring in JJ in the
first place he called up the brother Jim Harbaugh hey how good
was this kid at Michigan should i
take a chance. And that moment right there was when I thought,
okay, Harbaugh does not trust
Jameis Winston. He wants to get off the ride.
And when it went down, he immediately pulled out and
said, let's go with your Jim McCarthy.
So to me, I think he's going to start probably the next
month or the rest of the way.
Really interesting situation too, because McCarthy was dealing with
a lot of disadvantages in this one,
including the fact that all the Giants needed to do after they
kicked a field goal to go down seven was boot
the ball out of the back of the end zone because then
And they had two timeouts and the two-minute warning.
Their kicker couldn't do that.
And so the Giants got the ball back with just seconds left to play.
And McCarthy still had a crack at the end zone on a fourth and one.
And I'll tell you what, he was close.
And I think he might have tweaked his throwing motion a little bit.
He's got a little bit more air under the ball,
a little bit more zip under the ball.
Giants fans, I can just tell you this, Gil,
are going to be obsessed with this guy from here on out.
Oh, yeah.
Even on that play, I thought he was going
to convert it because he was playing so well.
He was playing inspiring football.
He was making throws he didn't make in Minnesota.
And then I started telling myself, well,
it's easier when you have Malik Nabers, but
in Minnesota, he had Justin Jefferson.
And it's like, okay, this guy's completely different.
He's starting to figure out how to play
with a number one wide receiver, how to make life
easier.
And then you're seeing the big throws,
why he was a first round pick, some mobility too
as well.
So I don't know, Connor, if he does this,
you know, from week in to week out for the
next few months here, I started asking questions about Minnesota.
What happened with Kevin O'Connell?
know why is John Harbaugh bringing out the best McCarthy
because this is a different guy it
happened just a few months ago where he lost
to Kyler Murray he was number three on the depth
chart that Carson went
so what happened to JJ overnight practically well like you say in the
NFL a hero turn can happen at any moment it's better than Cam Scadabo
and Jameis Winston in
the doghouse I can't believe I'm saying
this but this is JJ McCarthy's town now
