AI GeneratedA political panel discusses the tightening race for the Texas governorship between incumbent Greg Abbott and challenger Gina Hinojosa. While Abbott emphasizes his strong economic record and job growth, Hinojosa is gaining momentum by focusing on affordability and working-class issues, making her the most formidable opponent Abbott has faced in recent years.
They have shut down, Abbott has shut down the street in front
of the governor's mansion where we were originally going to have this.
They put moving trucks there, which I guess tracks with the polling.
I didn't know he'd start moving out, so.
Democrat Gina Hinojosa taunting the incumbent and kind of pimping
fresh polling, which has her ahead in two of the last three surveys.
Meantime, the governor stumping in East Texas,
pushing his economic record just up the road in Huntsville.
We rank number one for the most new jobs.
Number one for the most economic development projects.
More Texans have a job today than ever before
in the history of our state.
And importantly,
the median household income is higher than it's ever been.
And the poverty rate is lower than it's ever
been in the history of Texas.
Got to say, panel,
Gina Hinojosa has gone from sacrificial lamb to legitimate contender.
How are you seeing this race with 16 days to go?
Sergio, I know you're a Gina fan.
Absolutely.
I mean, she's doing extremely well.
You know, she's campaigning hard.
She's appealing to the working class women.
She's focusing on public education.
She's against rewarding billionaires.
I mean, she's doing a phenomenal.
And I think that Texas is ready
for the second woman governor of Texas named Gina.
Look, I opined this week and said,
I think that Greg Abbott is going to win because of his economic record
and because independence will break his way.
And I think that, you know,
corn and voting Republicans are going to vote his way.
And that's going to be enough, Charles.
Yeah, I mean, I think he's taking it seriously
because he should, and this is probably
the most formidable opponent he's had.
I mean, going back to Wendy Davis, she
was a formidable opponent, but I think she was
too far left and was on the heels of kind
of the whole abortion bill thing or whatever
that was.
Her filibuster.
Filibuster, yeah.
And then the opponents since then have really
not made a dent, but she's actually making
one, I think largely because of the
environment and the climate that we're in.
And so he's taking it seriously, but I think
if anyone has the least to worry about on
the ballot, it's probably Abbott.
All right, Bill, what's your take on this race?
So the difference between Paxton and Abbott,
as I said earlier, is that independents are not
breaking six to one against Abbott like they are against Paxton.
And Republican leaners are about
20 points above that. So if I had to bet money on this race,
I'd bet that Paxton loses and Abbott
holds on. But it's going to be a very close race,
and it all gets down to turnout.
But the two issues that are just killing Republicans right now
is affordability and
corruption and they're seen as the party
that is endorsing corruption that largely comes from
the president but it bleeds down to campaign contributions
at the state level and all sorts
of other things and the problem
is you can argue all day long about the economic stats and i think
everything greg said was true
but that doesn't really cancel out when you go to the gas pump
and you look at it and it's you know four
or five dollars a gallon so what i hear is that if gina
wins everybody's gonna win that would definitely probably yeah go ahead
but but the governor's
sitting there complaining about all these things
but dude you're the one that's been in charge
these are you have responsibility for this you know
not anybody else her new ad that she just
put out i think it's very clever
when she says they talk about me being woke i'm gonna talk
about everybody being broke i think it's
an excellent ad i like that quickly bob she's she's
a good communicator and you're right she's
the most accomplished candidate to run against Abbott
but Abbott's a fighter and he's got a great record
to stand on I think people should look at her
record in the legislature
and make decisions based on that all right still ahead a fresh
round of money woes descending on Houston City Hall
the problem this time property values on the decline
