England has three Kings who were named Richards, as well as two pretenders wanting to be the fourth.
The three King Richards were renowned for their courage, and two of them (Richard the Lionheart and Richard III) were accomplished military commanders.
Tragically, all of them, with no exceptions, met violent and dreadful ends.
This video looks at the life and death of the first two of the King Richards of England.
Richard I, the Lionheart
Richard I (1157 – 1199) was King of England from 1189 until he died in 1199.
Richard was known as “the Lionheart” and was famous for his bravery and military skills.
He defeated his father, Henry II, to win his crown.
Richard was Duke of Aquitaine at 13 and allied with the French King to defeat Richard’s father, Henry II, to win the English crown.
He also occupied Sicily and conquered Cyprus to save his sister and wife.
Richard led the Third Crusade and won victories against the famous Saladin.
On his return from the Crusade, Leopold of Austria imprisoned him when he had to pass Austria due to a shipwreck.
Leopold hated Richard after Richard tore down his flag during the crusade, for Richard saw Leopold as lower in ranking.
As the English King, he spent less than six months during his ten-years-reign in England and saw England as his source of funds for his conquests.
Tragically, he died besieging the small castle of Château de Châlus-Chabrol in France after his mom, Eleanor of Aquitaine, paid his ransom.
Richard was shot in the shoulder by a young boy using a crossbow and died of his wounds a few days later.
Despite his wish to free the young assassin, his commanders flayed and hanged the boy alive.
We hope you enjoyed this video, and please join us for the final part of this series on the tragic death of King Richards.
