In this 3rd and final video in the Bushcraft Basecamp Series, Scout and I camp out in the lean to. add rain protection, cook food, drink some beers and have a good time.
Hey folks, Joe and Scout out here back at the Bushcraft Base Camp.
We're going to do an overnight tonight
with a wool blanket, cook some good food,
have some beers, should be a nice time.
So just kind
of picking up where we left off last time,
I want to hammer in, hammer back
these lengthways support poles so that I can fit
another log on top.
So I can just, move Scout, you already took my heavy stick,
Move. Now I can put another full log back here
and give myself more space to lay down on.
Apologize for the sound. There's a whole lot of wind.
30 kilometer an hour winds all day today.
And it's whipping through these trees like crazy.
No more yellow on the trees,
they're almost bare. So lots of wind noise today.
Hopefully it dies down at night.
Too shabby. I am going
to use a sleeping pad.
I'm not going
to put it up right now.
But yeah, sleeping pad on top of the logs,
my wool blanket on top of me, fire in front.
Just a grand old time.
Some of you guys voiced your concerns on my shelter
not being enough protection from the rain,
and I think you might be right.
It's a little short, it's a little steep,
so we're gonna add rain protection,
and for that I need to tie a second ridge pole
above my ridge pole that I have now.
So right now we're just out looking for a long,
straight,
dead piece of wood.
I can probably just push it over.
I don't need to chop it.
Second ridge pole is gonna go about head height
and it is going to go on the same side
as the first ridge pole on the back side of the shelter.
So we'll get that in there.
Maybe I can rest it up there for a second.
So I got smart and pre-tied the Canadian jam knot
around, loosely around the tree.
That way I can just potentially slip
the ridge pole through
and tie her up.
So these Canadian jams, same thing I was using
in the first
video to tie
the ridge pole.
And just like in the other video,
I tried to do tension it with the stick
as opposed to pulling it with your hand.
But in the other video, my stick broke
because it was too small,
but this is a substantial stick.
Tie it as tight as I can,
and I'll do an overhand stopping knot.
Okay,
I
think
I
did
it.
Sturdy enough, my five
by seven tarp should
be big enough
to go seven feet this way and then five feet this way.
If I start it on here, if I tie it off here,
and tie it up off to some trees,
I'll get a good awning for rain protection.
I'm gonna get out of this sun,
and yeah, let's see if it works.
So I want to tie this overlapping the pole,
so that if rain drips on it,
it drips down this and off the back.
So I'm gonna get it overlapped, just wrap it,
and maybe tie it off on itself.
Doesn't have to be anything tight right now,
I'm just trying to get it secured on there,
so I
can see
if this
is even
going
to work.
It all looks good except for in the middle,
but if I pull this tab and tie it down or tie it back,
I think
we're
doing
good.
Now this works, it's non-intrusive, I can take it down.
It's gonna protect me from rain, snow when it comes,
but I'll be taking this down every time.
This isn't bad, and I'm not worried
about my fire burning
this at all.
Scout's over there playing around.
He's usually right under my feet,
So I'm glad when he goes off and sniffs around
and pretends to be a dog for a while.
So it's 2:30 now.
I have until about 5 o'clock until light's gone.
I've got to collect a bunch of firewood.
That maple I took down earlier was no good.
All rotten.
But I've got to make a fire, get firewood, cook up some food.
I'm getting pretty hungry now.
I might have a snack.
I'm going to make some sides to the shelter.
Right now it doesn't have any sides to it.
um basically done done everything uh that i want
to do with this shelter like i don't mind having
this tarp above me for rain protection all i really wanted
this place for was like i said to
sit down and have a fire have a little bit
of wind protection from the back sleep out here if i needed
to um yeah and this is this is done i'm pretty pretty happy with it
so i am going to add sides
like i said sides are imperative to me
so we'll do that today but other than that yeah i'm pretty
pretty pleased that my little chill out spot back you know
so I took your advice
I took the trim the the lip hanger advice most of them maybe they're
growing back a bit
but got a fresh new fresh new do I snipe the mullet you
can't have a shaggy man a shaggy mane
and a shaggy face you gotta you gotta
snipe the mullet
every now
and then you know
the old mullet
sniper something
else guys that's not too
bad yeah living large
on that one oh look that
Scootie lays down next to me like a big boy.
He's such a suck. He's such a suck scout
I think I'll do his pound steaks
in and sandwich logs in like that going up
That's what we'll do
I've got to find a stake a very long stake that I can use
and pound in and still have length
So I came across this here tree
that got bent down by another tree falling
And that's what we're gonna use
because there's a long straight piece I can get on it
You always have to be very careful with this kind of situation.
There can be a lot of torque,
a lot of tension when a tree has bent another tree over.
But in this case, it's actually cracked it already,
it's not going to really barber chair
on
me.
And it did still, it did still shoot back a bit.
Okay, so we're good there,
it's still in frame, nope I'm not.
Cut it as long as I can, there's actually a fork,
a Y on it and I'm going to leave that
on because it's always useful.
So let's cut it just
a few inches above the Y,
or above the crotch I should say.
Okay, this should be big enough.
Get this bad boy back over
to the base camp.
Thinning it all out so however much needs to go
into the ground will go easier
with less resistance.
Next up, I have to get a new one of these,
a new working log.
This one is garbage.
It's falling apart, it's making stuff bounce off.
It's
done,
it's
rotten
out.
Even better,
so that's the plan.
Just
layer in
big logs
like
this.
You can start to see my progress here.
This definitely is not finished.
I do want to come up the whole length of the way.
But what I also want to do is take my saw
and cut these kind of on a diagonal,
following the lean-to back
so that it doesn't look so obtrusive and big.
But right now I'm just working with my silky saw
and some of these iron,
like I just chopped through this iron wood.
It's a lot to work with.
So I'm going to wait until I come back another day
with my buck saw, my Egawa Canyon Boreal 21.
And that way, and actually more paracord or twine
because I don't have,
I'll probably use twine I don't have any more to spare today
so I'll tie the pieces onto the log
as well right now you can see I have a peg drove
into the ground on that side one on the other side
one here this one is tied to the tree tight
but in all honesty this is loose like these are these
are very loose so I can shake them they don't move
but I do want to secure them so like I said
again we'll come back saw them all down neatly tie them off
but it's 3 30 now i don't have any
firewood that has to be my my goal now
to go get some firewood time to go get some firewood like
i've been talking about for the past 20 minutes i kind
of like this whole like building as i go
thing like just doing it slow a little bit here
and there i had thought that this this camp out
would be the culmination of building on it
but i can still keep keep adding to it if i want to
making little tweaks here
or there that's fun makes me feel like honestly it makes me feel like
a kid again building building forts in the woods
because that's all it is right i'm just playing
i'm just i'm playing bushcraft no seriousness about it
at all i better start looking for trees
not talking to the camera
that is some dense oak super
old i really wish i brought
my buck saw
It's
just
too
much
for
this.
These
are
my
big
fuel
pieces.
These
things
are
super dense that they have
to be split down for sure.
Stay back scope back
This stuff the the bark of it
that's already starting
to fall off starting
to peel off easily is the stuff
I'm going after this kind of stuff here
I don't want to try and have to pry it off
because then a lot of the times it's too
Too hard too solid to use properly so that should be all right
I've been buffing up this grapevine bark for a couple minutes now all
of what I had turned into this
This is what you're going after super fibrous stuff
And that should should take
the spark from a fire steel
and flame up gotta flip it over upside down
After it's
going
but it's not
keeping a
flame close
fails just
give her
this was not
easier than just making shavings I just try
to do something different but
whatever looks
like it's gonna
work I don't
imagine my fire
is going to go
higher than this really the winds blowing it
a little bit but the flames
are probably about here this tarp
is maybe warm it's right on the cusp it's
like in the middle of the fire
and the heat can escape out the sides there's no
no concern at all for me
and if it does get spark holes in it I'm gonna patch it
up it's not a big deal at all you got to use
your stuff people are always so concerned about using
nylon near a fire and stuff like that but i do it all
the time putting this oak on so that when it
comes time to put my sausages on some oak coals stay lit
not like last time i've went around and
gathered a bunch of dead ash that i can cut up later
and burn so i've mentioned it before but
i know there's a lot of new subscribers
to my channel people who might not have seen those
videos the spot i'm in right now is very noisy
because i'm near a highway and surrounded by farm
fields so there's lots of trucks and traffic noise
but it's what i have around here and i'm
appreciative of it for when i can't get to the places
that are more remote and wild so my go-to
is this rice, this Uncle Ben's rice
um not the microwave one, this is called Fast and Fancy and
and I always like the fine urban wild rice.
Sometimes the chicken one's all right.
But, yeah, super cheap, man.
You can sometimes get this at the dollar store for a buck.
Look how small it packs down.
And if you ate this, you would be full for a couple hours for sure.
So we're going to make this up and then some sausages,
cut the sausages up, put them in there a little jambalaya style.
That's probably not a jambalaya.
Probably not a jambalaya.
So they're saying you've got to mix
this in with 500 mils of water and butter.
Butter, but I never put butter in and they want you
to put the seasoning stuff in beforehand
But sometimes when I don't have a way to measure my water
I'll just I'll put this in after because I can dump some water out
But I do have a way to measure on the side of my Nalgene
Seasoning packet mix that bad boy up
and then they got instructions on how you should do it
But all I ever do is put it on a boil and make sure the rice doesn't
stick to the bottom start burning i stir it every now
and then and then once it's almost done i just
move it off so it's just in residual heat not right
on the flames easy peasy takes like 15 minutes
not even we're
gonna use
a trusty old pot
hook she wants
to slide wants
to slide sideways
there's definitely
heat trapped in here
this little oh
the moon's out sweet uh
this little
shelter with the fire reflector i could feel radiating heat
not that i'm gonna need it it's
not it's not getting too cold at all
so yep well i hope you guys like this this little series i
don't know that i'll make any more
in this series i'll still come here and i'll still do stuff to
the shelter and and putz around the woods
and have fun and make a fire and stuff but i don't
know that i'll put it in this series i usually call those videos
when i'm out in this specific
wood the HD bushcraft videos
but I don't know I need to make a certain name for them all when I
come out here but I got some some trips planned
maybe I should maybe I should crack a beer whoa
let's just hit my set my camera maybe I should crack
a beer what do you guys think yeah all right
talk me into it it's uh 5 30
the sun's down moon's up residual light left not gonna have
light for too much longer
so the choice remains do i try one that i've not tried before at all
first or do i drink one that i know i really like
first i'm thirsty i think i'm going to give the
new one a shot i think i'm going to give
the equilibrium ESB extra special bitter by Knuckle
broke a shot
smells good
that's different
she's bitter wow
she's bitter that
is a weird taste
It's not bad. It's far from bad, but it's weird Mike.
Have you tried this kind Mike weigh in on this Mike Michael?
Has anybody tried this? I imagine you'd have to be Canadian
because they're from Canada
But yeah, give me your thoughts, give me some ideas
on good craft beers
They don't have to be IPAs, good craft beers that I might
be able to get my hands on in southern Ontario
So my rice is done
and there's still
some water in it
I took it down off the off the pot hanger put it next to my
sausages right on the on the coals
on the grill here with the lid off so that
it can evaporate all the extra water
these sausages are cooking up nicely, oh
yeah this is gonna be good, I'm excited yeah
that water is getting out of there
quickly as soon as I took that lid off
and brought it down here, it's happening
a lot quicker, you can see the steam coming off
of it, very good, I like to tie
scout up to a tree
when I'm out here not for fear of him running away but for
fear of coyotes drawing him out there
are big coyotes out here and I've seen
them before, so all I do is tie a bowline
on one side wrap it around so that it's
through a loop and then I'll give him a lot of lead
so he can get up and walk
around if he wants to, we're not gonna
do that just yet, that's not till I go to
bed, oh yeah she's just about done, sausage
is too, okay tell me this isn't
cool, how much is that gonna help
for filming, that's that through night, a big
flashlight just pointing right directly up at my tarp
on the ceiling, that is fantastic, I couldn't
ask for better lighting
and I got mood lighting if I want
or daytime very cool so these are nearly
done just like to open them up a little bit ah poop
so the inside gets cooked as much as possible
they're pre-cooked anyways it's
no big deal but a little ashy
on that one she's hot all right i'm
almost done man this flashlight
is awesome like it's daytime it's daytime gonna hook scout up
with some food too i brought his own
but i know he'd appreciate some rice and sausage with it
so give him about half
a sausage give him some
kibble some rice okay
maybe a little bit more
kibble under there you go buddy we'll have to let that cool
but that'll be a nice good meal
for him and then i plus i got all
that to give to him if he wants it
so he'll be good back up
buddy there you go food
and water good boy already
you're done already
no way kibble's not doing it
for you drink your water here good it's windy
super windy why'd you kick over your water bro
oh my gosh yeah this is good pretty uh pretty
relaxed right now i got nice fire light in front
of me that's all you're seeing
is light reflecting off a fire or from the fire
my doggy some good food
this beer is growing on me too
I need friends I need some
friends guys well that food was good hit
the spot I got some a little bit of
chocolate later on excuse me
for dessert Scouts licking his plate clean I
give him a little bit more rice he's right underneath me
now ball keeps
sliding on him ah what to do now hey what to do
it's uh it's only 20 after six and it's pitch black
did i say i need friends
so this light the TN42 it's a search light and they say it's one of the
most powerful uh LED lights it's got
a Cree XHP35 high LED and it's capable of 2000 lumens
with a max beam of 1550 meters it's got a lifespan
of 20 years it's got technology to prevent
overheating their modes range from firefly
at 0.8 lumens low 38 lumens medium 256 lumens high
780 lumens and turbo which
is 2000 lumens it takes four 18650 batteries which is nuts it's a pig
but there's a charger for it
so you don't have to keep buying batteries and uh yeah it'll last you
20 years like it said so i don't know depending
on what you need it for i'm using it for this
it's freaking awesome for this and then to have around
the house too you can never never have too
many flashlights as i'm learning i'll put the link
in the description where you can find one of these
i get a lot of questions all the time about
um asking me to do a video about my like spooky
experiences in the woods and stuff
or my scariest experiences in the woods and like i hate to be a
stick in the mud but like i honestly don't have
any it's it's it's boring it's a boring answer i
know but i don't have any somebody pointed out to me
the other day on a video i'll probably link it
in the description i'll write it in the description there's
a certain point in a video where i'm out
here at this specific spot
and in the background you can see like a human-like figure it's blurred
out because the depth of field with my DSLR walked past where i
am and i like whatever people put
like put that all the time in my comments
and it's a chipmunk or it's like scout or but like
it was i was i was alone and i had no clue
and this is i can't remember what video it is but
i'll find it i'll put it in the in the link
but that's probably the freakiest thing and i just
heard they put that comment like yesterday
the day before now i'm out here camping so that's
kind of got me a little a little sketched out
um buddy brian actually found on devil's night
out here a rabbit with his head cut clean off
the head was gone it was just a rabbit body
so that's strange an animal wouldn't do that and it wouldn't
be clean but like yeah nothing nothing
real crazy man even
when i saw that bear on Vancouver Island it wasn't wasn't really like a
scary thing or a worrisome thing at all
but i don't know no bigfoot stuff either guys i'm not
I'm not, I'm not, not a believer,
but it's a far stretch for me, it's a far stretch for me,
good times, just having fun in the woods,
you know, that beer's done, looking forward to my
next one, but I still got some time to go,
it's not late enough yet, guys, it's not late enough
yet to drink the last beer,
that's gonna do a lot, just having
this little bit on my head,
keep your head warm i'm gonna stay warm i'm gonna stoke
the fire a bit too it's not that cold it's
just the wind whipping through i
can feel how's that how is that
headlamp mounted to the camera
i think it's time guys i think it's time
not vader time some of you'll know what that means
time for the Karma Citra this thing is freezing cold super
into it right now it is nine o'clock
very grapefruity
very grapefruit
juicy oh fantastic
beer look
at them curl look
at that look at them
curl that's my martin tribute
my martin scrambled o's shout out look
at them curl look at it
bashmaster so this side isn't completed
and it's done a different way than the other side where
there's logs or what i did today but my backpack fits
and the wind is coming predominantly from
this way but my backpack fits right here nice
and flat up against the wall and my
head my whole body's gonna be below
my my backpack anyway so this is gonna be a
nice windbreak for me sit right there
and yeah I feel nice and protected in
this thing man I'm looking forward
to going
to sleep tonight tell me that
doesn't look like
a lightsaber
on them. There we go.
Nice and flat and it can join its buddy.
We'll pack those out in the backpack.
Waiting all day for this. All right guys I'll see you in the morning.
I hope that I have a good
night's sleep. I think that I will.
Good night. Good morning.
Had a great night's sleep last night. I slept
from just after 10 till about 5 in the morning.
So super refreshed. It's about 5 40 in the morning
right now my mommy is coming to pick me up at seven in the morning
so i need to get up get this
fire going make breakfast pack up
and hike my butt out of here pretty quickly i got no light
it's daylight savings time
my head's on fire
so i got two packs of oatmeal
this morning i'm gonna
let them sit while i continue to pack up i slept
pretty solid i was i was kind of chilled because
i just had that wool blanket
so i slept with all my clothes on i ended up taking my puffy jacket
it off i was too warm um right when i first went to bed
but then after out through the night it got
got chilly with just that wool blanket
and i didn't have the fire going the whole time i didn't
stoke it once i went to bed at all there was such
a good base of coals this morning i was able to
blow it back to life like you saw always like
that just rekindling the fire i was expecting it to get
a little bit lighter for my hike
out of here i'm running out of time
all right there should be time to
start making my way out of here there's enough
light now where i can see without using my head
lamp which is good try
and see if i can make it back it's gorgeous out here sun's coming up on
the other side of me making good time i made it out
of the woods okay guys that's it i'm out at
the road now i just gotta wait for my mommy
my mommy to pick me up i hope you guys enjoyed this
i hope you enjoyed the video i hope you enjoyed
the series this will be the end of the series but
i will continue to come out here like i said
so thank you very much for watching
leave a comment and uh yeah have a great day guys take care
