Timeline of Queens: England vs France: 1200-1300
The Queens of England:
Isabella of Angouleme (reign: 1200-1216):
She was the second wife of King John, who loved her and reportedly stayed in bed until noon with her.
Historians called this beautiful English Queen the "Helen of the Middle Ages."
She shocked England by marrying her daughter's fiancé after King John died.
No English Queens:
Henry III became King when he was only nine years old.
Half of England
and all of his French
Territories except
for Poitou and
Gascony was in rebel
or French hands.
Half of England and all of his French territories except for Poitou and Gascony were in rebel
or French hands.
Henry III never married
in the first 20 years
of his reign.
Luckily, he was the longest-reigning Medieval King of England and did marry a Queen when he was 29.
Eleanor of Provence (reign: 1236-1272):
She was the wife of Henry III of England (m 1236-1272) and was fiercely loyal to him.
Eleanor was the younger sister of Margaret of Provence, the French Queen.
Her two younger sisters, Sanchia and Beatrice, married the Kings of Germany and Sicily.
Although loved by Henry III, the Londoners hated her and once pelted her barge with stones, rotten eggs and vegetables.
Eleanor was the mother of Edward I (Edward Longshank) and directly supervised his education and upbringing.
Young Prince Edward defeated Simon de Montfort at the Battle of Evesham to free his father.
Interestingly, Eleanor was the only English Queen without a marked Grave.
Eleanor of Castile (reign: 1272-1290):
Eleanor of Castille was the Queen of Edward I. They married in 1254, 18 years before Edward was King.
They were very close, and Eleanor travelled with Edward on his crusade and other wars and conquests.
Edward missed her after her death and once wrote about his wife, "who living we dearly cherished, and whom dead we cannot cease to love".
Margaret of France:
Edward only considered remarrying in 1293 and married Margaret of France in 1299, the granddaughter of his aunt, who was 40 years younger than him.
Can this vast age difference between Edward I and Margaret work?
Was Margaret able to fill the gap in Edward's heart?
