In Costa Rica, a fisherman named Chito rescued a wounded crocodile he found on a riverbank. Despite the animal's dangerous nature, Chito nursed it back to health through dedicated care and affection. This act of kindness forged an extraordinary, lifelong bond between man and reptile, challenging the perceived nature of predators and capturing worldwide attention.
Some of the most dangerous animals on earth live in rivers,
and crocodiles are among the most feared.
But one morning, a fisherman in Costa Rica discovered
a wounded crocodile on a riverbank.
What happened next would change both their lives.
Gilberto, known to everyone as Chito, lived in Siqueiras, Costa Rica.
He spent his days fishing
and sometimes guiding tourists through the jungle.
He loved wildlife, especially unusual animals
that others preferred to avoid.
Chito lived near the Reventazon River, where crocodiles were common.
These powerful predators could grow over 5 meters long
and weigh more than 450 kilograms.
Most locals knew to keep their distance.
One morning, Chito took his fishing boat onto the river as usual.
The air was warm, and mist covered the water.
As he paddled along the bank,
he noticed something dark lying partly in the water.
At first, he thought it was a fallen log, but as he approached,
He recognized the long tail, rough scales, and narrow snout.
It was a crocodile.
The animal wasn't moving.
Chito waited, expecting it to disappear into the river.
Instead, it remained completely still.
Then he noticed something that made him look closer.
The crocodile was still breathing.
Chito carefully stepped onto the riverbank
and approached the crocodile.
That was when he noticed a terrible wound on the left side of its head.
Its eye was missing, and the surrounding skin was dark and damaged.
Someone had shot the animal and left it to die.
Chito suspected a farmer had attacked
it after losing cattle to crocodiles.
The wounded reptile was extremely thin,
weighing only about 70 kilograms.
Most people would have walked away,
knowing how dangerous even an injured crocodile could be.
But Chito couldn't leave it there.
He returned to his village and convinced a few friends to help him.
Together, they carefully lifted the weakened crocodile
into a boat and brought it home.
Chito knew he couldn't keep a wild crocodile openly,
so he hid it in a small pond surrounded
by thick forest behind his property.
For the next six months, he devoted himself to saving the animal.
Every day, he brought fish, chicken, and medicine to treat its wound.
But the crocodile refused to eat.
Determined to help, Chito even began chewing fish before offering it,
hoping the softer food would be easier to swallow.
Slowly, the crocodile began accepting food from his hands.
As the crocodile grew stronger, it began recognizing Chito.
He spent nights beside the animal, talking,
singing, and even hugging and kissing it.
He believed the crocodile needed affection
as much as food and medicine.
His wife was furious when she discovered what he was hiding.
She warned him that the animal could kill him,
but Chito refused to abandon it.
Over time, the crocodile gained weight,
its skin became healthier, and its wound healed.
Chito named him Pacho.
After six months, Pacho was strong enough to return to the wild.
Chito released him into the river and watched him disappear.
He thought their story had ended.
But the next morning, Chito found Pacho lying beside his front door.
The crocodile had returned on his own.
When Chito called his name, Pacho responded.
Chito realized the animal wanted to stay.
His wife eventually demanded
that he choose between her and the crocodile.
Chito chose Pacho, believing their bond was irreplaceable.
Years later, Chito married Olga, who accepted Pacho.
Together, they built a family while the crocodile continued growing.
Pacho eventually reached over 5 meters long
and weighed nearly half a ton, yet remained gentle with Chito.
Chito began swimming with Pacho,
hugging him and even kissing his snout.
Whenever Chito entered the water, the crocodile rushed toward him
with its mouth open, then closed its jaws and gently touched his face.
Their extraordinary friendship continued for more than 20 years.
After a ranch worker witnessed them swimming together,
news of their bond spread worldwide.
Television crews and scientists traveled to Costa Rica to see them.
Some experts warned that Pacho could attack Chito at any moment,
but the crocodile never showed aggression toward him.
The Costa Rican government eventually allowed Chito
to keep Pacho legally,
provided veterinarians and biologists regularly examined him.
Every Sunday, visitors gathered to watch their performances.
Pacho responded when Chito called his name,
rolled over, lifted his head and tail,
and even winked his remaining eye.
Most astonishingly,
Chito placed his head inside Pacho's enormous mouth,
and the crocodile always let him pull away unharmed.
Despite their worldwide fame,
Chito never forgot the wounded animal
he had discovered on the riverbank.
He had simply wanted to show Pacho that not every human would hurt him.
What began as an act of kindness became an extraordinary friendship
between a fisherman and a wild crocodile.
