In 108 AD, the Ninth Legion inscribed a dedication slab at York. By 165 AD, it had vanished from Roman military records. For seventy years, popular culture blamed Scotland — Rosemary Sutcliff's 1954 novel depicted the legion annihilated by Caledonian tribes. The story is wrong. In 1971, historian Eric Birley proved officers of the Ninth served on the continent after its supposed Scottish destruction. Tile stamps at Nijmegen place the legion in the Netherlands around 120 AD. The current scholarly consensus: the Ninth was destroyed in the Bar Kokhba Revolt in Judea, or lost in the Eastern wars against Parthia. Not Scotland. The East.
