A powerful twist on tie-dye is coming to Birmingham.
Michigan fashion designer David Schlesinger
is bringing his one-of-a-kind ice dye designs
to Caruso Caruso this weekend.
And he joins us now to show us all of his pieces, welcome.
Thank you so much.
So how did you get into this?
So I'm a hippie at heart
and during COVID I wanted to keep busy and we all needed to
wear masks.
And so I started dyeing them after a love
of tie-dye from summer camp and my mom's been
in fashion forever, and a little hobby turned into a business.
I love that.
We can see how much you love it.
You got the glasses, the shirt.
Yeah, yeah.
You're really rocking it.
I'd wear it for sure.
Now, is ice dyeing different than tie dyeing?
So we're still tie dyeing.
Okay.
We're scrunching, we're tying.
There's a lot of different ways we can do it.
Ice is a way of allowing the colors to split,
and it takes a little bit longer, but we get
much more extreme-looking designs, which is really fun.
It looks very cool.
How much longer does it take compared
to when you're doing a tie dye design?
So what I'm gonna do in a minute here, this is kind of for television.
It's gonna be a one minute process
and then we sit for a day to let it set.
Wow, okay.
Show us how to do this.
Where are we starting?
All right.
So yeah, simple.
This is basic white t-shirt that's been soaked
in a chemical solution that will allow the
dye to bond to it.
Okay.
Then I'm just gonna throw a little ice on top right here.
And it's kind of fun in that different ice
will actually give us different looks.
Really? So you have to be particular about the ice?
You don't have to be. Anybody can do this and have
a great time. Kids can do it, whatever.
But if you want it to look really nice like yours does.
I mean, you're going to make something beautiful.
If you want it to be wild like this, spend some years.
So I'm going to throw a little bit of blue,
a little bit of pink, and a little bit of yellow.
And then one lucky person
from your studio will end up with a shirt tomorrow.
Oh, nice. So you're just sprinkling it? There's no real technique?
There's a ton of technique, but we don't have a ton of time for that.
Yeah.
But I just wanted you guys to be able
to see how easy it is if you wanna get involved
in it.
So that's a blue.
Can I try the yellow?
Yeah, you can do it.
Please, please.
I'm gonna do a little bit.
Yeah, do it.
I don't wanna mess up the color.
Let's get it all over here.
Okay.
And this can be yours.
So you layer it a bit?
You can layer it and then you think yellow
and you can mix colors and you kinda
get different, let's say a red and a blue will make a purple.
Very nice.
Now do you wanna lay it on thick, sprinkle it?
Depends what you're looking for.
The more you lay it on, the brighter it'll get.
If you wanted a little more pastel, you can just do a little bit.
Okay, we're gonna leave it here,
we're gonna quit while we're ahead, I don't wanna mess
anything up here.
No, you did an incredible job.
Thank you, thank you.
Yes, and nobody spilled.
Look it, we're in business here.
Yeah, nice and clean.
So what's next after we do this?
So then we set this aside in a warm corner for about 24 hours,
wash it, dry it, and you've
got magic.
So it's gonna melt through with the ice.
It's gonna melt through
and it'll kind of do a little wavy action, yeah, and you'll
get something cool.
Very cool.
For sure.
You have obviously created a very successful business with this.
Talk about how it's been going.
It's been incredible.
I'm from here, born and raised in Detroit,
been in Los Angeles for 30 years.
And fashion's always been in my blood.
My mom started a company called Skinny Tees in 2009.
Really?
That's your mom?
That's my mom.
I love her T-shirt.
Yeah.
Tell her I said hi.
She's great.
I will, I will.
So it's been in my blood forever
and I never really had, I didn't know how I was gonna
get into fashion.
And then, as mentioned during COVID,
I started making masks, COVID ended and I started doing
T-shirts and merch and working with bands
and it's turned into a real thing.
And then I took it from simple T-shirts
and socks to cashmere and women's apparel.
And I'm in a bunch of stores
and now I'm doing this pop up at Caruso Caruso today and I couldn't
be more thrilled.
So you'll be there today.
People can check you out, get them some cool eye style fashion.
Yeah, I'll be there from 10 to 4, you know,
Caruso Caruso has been around since 1981.
I've been shopping there since I was little,
so it's just a real fun full circle to come
back and you know, did some pieces with a nod to the Great Lakes here.
I'll hold this one up.
Actually, you know, did some fun.
Yeah, just some really fun, you know, nice.
So yeah, it's really exciting.
I'm thrilled to be here.
And thank you so much for having me.
We're happy to have you.
You did fantastic.
We'll have his information.
