-- Join me as I drive north into the real Canadian Winter, to visit my buddy, Shawn James from the recently popular youtube channel, My Self Reliance, in his off grid log cabin he built in the forest with hand tools. We explore his land for animal tracks, and future cabin and homestead building sites, we cook bear ribs, and steak on an open fire outside the log cabin, cut firewood for the woodstove, and enjoy the cabin life. The next day we set off on an icefishing camping trip, with a supermoon! .....but that is on next weeks full length video :) Hope you enjoy.
Joe visits Shawn James at his hand-built log cabin in the Ontario wilderness for a winter getaway. The trip focuses on the craftsmanship of the cabin, the utility of specialized winter gear, and the preparation for an upcoming ice fishing excursion, all while navigating the challenges and comforts of extreme cold weather.
Hey guys, how you doing?
Joe here, thanks for joining me.
I'm pretty excited.
I'm on my way up to see Mr. Shawn James
at his log cabin he's built.
We're gonna stay here overnight.
Tomorrow we're gonna go ice fishing,
stay in a canvas tent.
Stay along, I
think you're gonna
enjoy this one.
Hello, Mr. Shawn James.
How you doing, buddy?
How you doing?
Good to see you.
All righty, it's cold.
Yeah.
Oh man, this is nice.
Thank you.
Look at this.
Warm, inviting fire.
Bam.
Nice and warm in here too.
We're cozy.
Yep, hang your stuff up there and settle on in.
You have your lunch here?
Yeah, no, but let's eat for lunch, have you?
No. Nice.
Lunch day!
This place has changed a little bit since I saw it last.
Yeah, I don't even think,
there wasn't a floor when you were in here.
No, it was a half floor.
Yeah, you're still working on it, but this is all new.
Like, it looks, it's like a, like a house,
like a, like a log cabin.
Look at this, he made a chair, you made that table?
Yep. Nice.
Some people recognize the legs,
come from a local shelter.
Oh, it looks like Striped Maple under there too.
Yeah.
And then these are,
Sean's referring to our old shelter.
Those are from that, nice.
Is this my bed?
That's your bed. Oh, snap.
You're making it just for me?
Yours and Cali's.
Aw, piss.
Dog bed. Dog bed.
On the same level.
That's pretty cool, man.
The fridge here, keep my food down in the icebox.
How was that, digging that out?
It was real fun.
But it's been effective.
It's 22 degrees Celsius up here,
and it'll be about two to three degrees Celsius
down in the block.
That's handy, dude.
Yeah, it's perfect.
Yeah, summer and winter kind of thing.
Very cool.
Very cool.
Yeah, so it's a work in progress.
A little bit more to do.
Next phase this week.
So Tom will start making the countertop here.
Got a sink that's going in there.
A couple of shelves.
maybe like a jam cover here
and then a couple of chairs back there and then
pretty well done like interior
that I can get working inside. Yeah it seems like
you've utilized the space
in it pretty efficiently. Yeah and we were talking
earlier, my wife and I,
about putting a door through here so cut a door through there
onto a covered porch so a full screened in porch
so we can overlook the stream.
Yeah it looks bad there's a little pond back there.
Yeah. Nice. Yeah very cool man
this is this is awesome pretty uh you feel pretty accomplished over
this i would i feel very
accomplished you know i'm just working away at it
and wasn't thinking too much about it but now
that it's done i do have to admit the first time i sat by the fire
and had a meal by myself and
and got comfortable when it was freezing inside i think that's
when it really hit me that i did
it on my own i used to have done oh yeah this is nice
to be here i can't imagine the uh like i
built some shelters and felt accomplished
but this is pretty cool man yeah making it home
man just hanging things everywhere i'm loving it everything
in here is pretty personal there's
stuff on the wall the bear the deer antlers
the paddle here everything has a story behind it
that's very cool still got some tools on the wall
that'll come down with some finished construction
that's part of the motif, no, very cool, very cool
man, next week i'm gonna make a cutting board
To be fair,
Sean did
offer me some.
To be fair, my wife made enough for me.
Do you have any mustard?
I actually do, I think, in the icebox.
Well, that makes my day.
Yeah, I'll eat some of those.
Oh yeah, hot peppers all day.
I'm going to mix up some salmon.
Boys
and girls,
thank you.
This is luxury.
It's going to go soft.
I don't know if we're going to make it out contenting an ice fishing.
That's a very true statement.
it's funny you get uh where i've gotten used
to i've mentioned this before but i've gotten used to
cold camping over the last several years well since i lost my cabin
or got rid of my cabin first
cabin was that the year 2000 or 2001
so i've been basically cold camping in winters and not um you
know having the luxury of a heated cabin
so it's starting to go soft already even though it's only been a
couple of months yeah i never uh used
the hot tents until maybe last year as well yeah i like
them there's two you know it's two different kinds
of camping right i'll still do both but
let's get this real quick well look
at the difference with um well we're getting older
too I guess a little bit I am but if you look
at um the hot tenting wasn't really mainstream until
recently you couldn't get tents unless you went to the great big blues
or a guide tent you know
right oh yeah yeah yeah so now it's more available
and more information out there a lot heavier right
so it's not stuff I like to explore when I go to do stuff, so.
Yeah, they're good for a base camp kind of thing
and then go from there or whatever.
Yeah.
Definitely has a place.
So do just bivvies, right?
Oh, mustard!
Oh, I'm gonna, uh, you got,
you got a pot of coffee, pot of water on right now?
Yeah.
Okay, cool. I'm gonna make up some coffee.
Oh yeah?
Yeah.
Oh yeah! I've, uh, I've adopted the coffee ways.
Yeah, I actually just said to my wife,
I don't think Joe will actually drink coffee.
Yeah, so I do now. This one's caramel. I don't know.
It's Colombian. It's legit coffee. It's the JivaCube stuff.
That's awesome. I remember seeing that on TAO Doors.
Yeah.
Anyways, so, they're good.
I've never tried that. So what do you do? You stick it in your cup?
Yeah, you can try one if you want to. That one's caramel.
Yeah, do you mind?
No, go ahead. Yeah, yeah, for sure.
I'll make you an espresso tomorrow.
Oh, fancy pants. All right, cool.
I might be bouncing off the walls of an espresso.
But yeah, they dissolve after a while,
they're super hard, the Colombian, and then they taste
really good.
I don't put anything in it.
Yeah?
No.
Will was putting like coffee and sugar, so I don't think it needs it
at all.
So there's...
Yeah, there's multiple in it.
Okay.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
There's just a stick one in there.
Come on.
That's awesome.
That's very, very easy
Yeah, very good.
Flip them out.
You can buy them anywhere, or what?
Oh, it's travel to you,
or I should probably have a link to it.
Wood stove really warms this place up, dude
I got
my down booties.
I threw those bad boys on.
No peasant life in the cabin.
This trip is going to be split up into two.
We're staying here, Sean's cabin, the full day and night tonight.
And then tomorrow we're going to get up early and hike out from here.
Sean knows there's a pretty cool lake,
a couple set of lakes we can go to.
We're going to hike out that way with our sleds behind us.
Sean's got an ice auger, as you can see right here.
We'll be drilling a hole, ice fishing all day.
And we'll set up the canvas tent, the snow trucker.
So it would be almost as comfortable as in here
Yeah, well, yeah, actually when they're
when the wood stove's humming it's hotter.
Oh, yeah, cause it's smaller. Yeah. Yeah, it's almost unbearable
And then you have the option of staying up all night
and stoking the fire, just letting it go and
Oh, that's I go to bed. I don't yeah,
I'm not trying to get up and stoke the fire or nothing
No, if I brought a sleeping bag that wasn't rated for it, obviously
that'd be part of it, but yeah, I know I don't like to get up and stoke the fire
No, my sleeping bag, the mummy bag from Mac,
it's down to minus 30 or something, and it does.
I've been down to minus 38 in it, and I've been warm.
Yeah?
Oh, yeah, it's awesome.
That's the same one you used last year?
Yeah.
Is that synthetic?
No, it's down.
What's it called? A storm? Really good.
Nice.
In the cabin here, which I didn't know either,
even though it's not fully changed,
If I let that die completely, that wood stove,
it's about 10 degrees Celsius when I get up in the morning still.
After having it fire up the day prior?
Up till literally, yeah,
if I stoke it for the last time, say 11 at night.
Right.
It dies completely to the point that it's actually cold
and I can take the ash out.
But the heat in the walls,
these logs heat up and just release the heat all night.
So you're getting 10 degrees Celsius in the morning.
Yeah.
That's pretty decent.
Yeah, I go to bed, it's like 22, 23.
That's not unbearably cold in the morning.
No, in fact, most of the night I have to keep my sleeping bag open.
My house in Huntsville was colder than that.
The morning when we woke up, I swear to God.
Yeah, actually, my first house was a story home.
It was really well insulated, but we heated it.
Well, we had electric like you did
in Huntsville, but we didn't put it on.
Yeah, we barely put it on.
No, we couldn't afford to.
No, no, who can, right?
Yeah.
So the wood stove would die.
Come home late at night and it's like two degrees in there.
You just bundle it up.
trying to watch a movie is impossible yeah have
a couple kids yeah trying to
sharpen up this be sure
so I'm just put a strap on that I sharpened it last
week as you saw before I headed out
with my wife ice fishing so I'll just touch
those up this is actually a Mora everybody's
into the Mora knives so this
is a Mora auger ice auger
so it's kind of an old style and I've had this
forever and nothing really can happen
to it you can replace the blades if you do
chip them they love painting the baby blue on stuff yeah
so for you guys don't
know that or haven't watched which probably isn't too many of you Sean
James here has a YouTube channel called
my self-reliance and he's built this
cabin by hand with with hand tools
and he's got a whole list of catalog videos
was building it from the ground up starting
when last spring yeah like may last spring till now
and he's still he's done the cabin 90 percent done
the cabin as you can see tons of stuff more
to do on it more homesteading stuff to do so check
his channel out i'm sure you guys will like it's
very interesting he's blowing up right now it's uh you got
to get on in on the ground floor
got a couple of new knives here Joe brought up for me from
Adventures Corner I don't know
do you know anything about these things i do yeah i do um
this is the fisherman model
this is his first I believe first run at the take of
the fisherman models so he had a little bit of trial
and error with the sheaths
but came with a really really quality
sheath I think yeah oh they made it in
house oh yeah everything yeah everything
so we got pretty good bend on it for a
pull knife and that's cedar that's
a cedar wood with OD green spacers so
So it's really nice. I've never seen a cedar wood handle before.
When I saw that they were doing that,
I was pretty interested in it, and then it turned out to be yours.
And then he sent a matching Classic, which is a really nice knife.
I'm actually pretty jealous of the color combo on this one
and the whole getup, but they're matching.
Cedar
with green again.
Nice knife
there.
No, no, you're good.
But yeah, and then a matching Firesteel, so thanks to those guys.
thanks guys appreciate it very cool I
got you I showed you mine so I got the
same when Sean's order came
to my house I got mine I got the white one
with the orange and then the matching fishermen
as well we'll try to get those
put to good use especially that fisherman come on I'll teach you how to
trout fish, yeah, well to find a grocery store, I got the guy
who commented the
McDonald's thing. I got him back. I'm sure it's him.
I saw a comment the other day about
a true Canadian leaving without camping or something.
Don't forget to put the McDonald's
or the Tim Horton out of frame.
I was so trying not to just write back Tim Horton's. Like
an asterisk. I didn't do it. I didn't do it.
I should have done it. For the record, I wanted
these, it's not Sean knows I can't, yeah it's true I
can't even make it easy, we have to stop twice on them
yeah, well I think we've uh stayed in here
and chatted long enough catching up, we don't go
now we're not going at all, right? I'm losing light
so uh not really, but it's gonna get dark in a
couple hours I think we're going to go outside
and fix up the fire pit, there's a lot of snow
around there. It needs to be dug out.
Sean brought some bear ribs and some grass-fed beef steaks.
Grass-fed beef steaks. Some bear. So yeah, we'll do that.
We'll grill those guys up outside of
the cabin instead of sitting in here
and cooking on the wood stove. Grilling is a little bit
tastier. Oh yeah, yeah. I'm actually saving them
to actually go outside with the two
cold and lazy. That's that whole getting soft thing.
Yeah. All right, cool. Yeah, let's go do
Look at that,
it's a little
brighter out here.
So that's the fire pit we're talking about.
Where did you get that metal thing, the fire pit thingy?
My buddy Kyle in Barrie, Ontario has a machine shop.
Actually, he's got a pretty cool little Instagram page,
Iron Arts.
Iron Arts.
Or Iron Hiker, so he made this little hiker
out of railway spikes.
Okay, oh yeah.
Yeah, and he goes to Killarney
and he'll put that on a little ridge,
a close-up photo so it looks like a full-size person oh
that's cool yeah i've seen things like
that before with like little like bigfoot statues yeah yeah yeah well
that's kind of cool yeah i
haven't
used it yet
so this is good
there you go
so sean's gonna
let me use
his fancy
axe tell me
all about that axe please chopper one usa this is uh
this is one of the original models i think they
were made from 1978 to 1986
or something like that went out of business or you guys shut down
on production for a number of years,
and they just kind of made a resurgence recently.
I did a review on this and a couple of other channels
like Crazy Russian Hacker and Wrangler Star,
and it's kind of been a resurgence.
People are interested in them again.
Can you show me the, yeah.
It's the way it works.
There's just a spring in there, a pin with a spring,
and when it bites into the wood,
when the bit bites into the wood,
that spreads quickly and just shoots the wood open.
splits it like crazy yeah cool I'd love
to give that thing a shot yeah it's not
much you don't need to swing very hard
you come straight down on it nice long
handle
and less
energy for
sure cool oh
man I almost split
those
chopping
block yeah
so no power right you don't have to like put any oomph into it wow okay
and because it starts and it's
very blunt anyway
because yeah it's not biting in so you don't waste energy
biting in and trying to get it out again dude
that's insanity that was no effort at all
granted these are pretty straight grain pieces yeah
but I'm sure well that's
when I was testing it in one
of my videos I got the chunkiest maple that old
gnarly knots and everything still still a couple swings
but should have taken me five or six
right that's nuts you can't even do it too hard
because you're searching for your
wood the whole day. That's pretty cool.
A whole bunch of people ordered it right after I did that video.
Oh yeah? Yeah. Should have had an arrangement. Yeah.
Where's that affiliate link for the axe? The axe affiliate.
That's nuts, dude. That really makes things a hell of a lot easier.
And by all accounts, these springs do last a long time.
actually that's how I found out they're
in business again I was looking for spare
parts so I should at least have them on hand
but yeah they have a website again
so you can get them so the only thing
that would go is the pins yeah or the
springs would weaken right this is pine
that's cedar yep that's the cedar offcut
It's like I feel like I'm
not swinging it like
nearly hard enough
Well, I'm pretty impressed if I ever need a splitting axe.
This is where I'm going like did this this brand for sure
There's no doubt in my mind. Well, it's still crack
What do you want to what are these things run do you think?
70 US maybe?
It's not that bad.
No, it's not like you're paying much of a premium
Dude, for a tool that's going to make your life easier?
Yep.
Pretty cool.
There we go.
Okay, well, fixing up that fire pit didn't take too long, Sean.
Now what do we do?
Now what do we do?
So we're going to go take a walk down to the old shelter we built,
the old shelter location.
Some kids built it, I think.
Some punk kids, yeah, didn't know what they were doing.
But yeah, so we'll go down to there, the lumber location.
we'll go check out the pond maybe see if we can see any animal tracks
so we'll go on we'll go on
a little winter hike right on the edge of a winter deer yard
so like two miles up the way here to the
north of us there's major one of the biggest deer yards
in Ontario tons of deer but also means a lot
of wolves hang out in this area
so we're right on the southern fringe of where they come down to
there might be some wolf tracks or moose down
in here fringe you might have heard sean talking
about it earlier but we're pretty lucky right now we don't have
to use snowshoes same thing
with my last trip. There's a lot of snow, but there's a crack.
Even though we're punching
through, we're
not punching through much.
Really too sure what
these tracks are, but
they're all over the place.
You can tell they're
not hooves.
In themselves, too, though.
Which
is normally a fox, right? Yeah. Going in their own track?
Yeah, exactly, yep. And this is
prime firewood over here, these dead cedars.
You see a lot of this sometimes, or a lot
of the time, actually, in old ponds or even in lakes,
these tall dead cedars. They're
Completely petrified wood, rot resistant,
make great firewood, but they're always super hard to get
except for the winter time.
This is the area that you hear
the wolves howling from normally?
It is, yeah.
Yeah?
Three people on the entire road
that live here full time.
The next guy up, which is a few miles,
he befriended a pack of wolves six years ago.
So they come and hang out on his driveway.
They can do howls with him.
Oh, man.
One that's about six feet, six years old this year.
Six or seven feet long, pure white.
That's pretty cool, that's cool
Smart it's not
a far-fetched
for me
to believe it
Whoever watched
that that big old
Shelter build video back
in last March we'll recognize this spot. Oh
Look at that. She was a biggin. Oh, man.
We put some work into this thing
I forgot how big it was what do we camp out here for two nights?
We built a campfire for two nights, two nights.
Oh, yeah, cuz the first thing
First night
Captain Morgan
Well, I'm glad that didn't happen
yeah we slept one night before the shelter was done
and then another night with it
back to the shelter hey just don't worry nothing happened
that's a shelter that's shelter guys
blame it on kids but no what happened was the uh
the one support tree got uprooted that's all that
happened but that stood for what six months seven months
that probably happened we had some fall
rains I would say that root ball got loosened up
and then it pushed it over
when the beauty of this is that nothing goes to waste
so what you see here I've
got well I made the table legs
that you saw earlier right in the cabin yeah yeah
I'm building the stairs up to the upper floor out
of this the kitchen and then
the remaining ones I'll build
the workshop walls structure I'm gonna start
in the spring I get more use out of it
that way now it's season oh I knew this
is gonna happen i was like we're just you know
this is money in the bank for later yeah it's
like a log cash yeah exactly you can really see just how big it
is or big it was um yeah this is
a fun project we we wanted to build this together
and we had a good time doing it if you guys want
to check out that video like i said it was from last march sean
and i both have a video of that
on our respective channels i think mine's called
um no i don't think i know i know it's called 48
our camp and build large semi-permanent adirondack shelter
on newly acquired property
she's a little long on that one
but you know what yours is called i don't even have a clue anymore
uh if i can remember if i remember i'll link it
in the description both of ours but uh yeah that
was fun then that was i guess there would have
been ice on that little thing because we were
walking back and forth cutting wood we did walk we
were a little sketchy we walked the edges
on the way over here but i know we got across yeah well it
was then we heard water running
these are all balsam fir logs tons of balsam
and fir around here this is actually a really
cool spot remember we thought that it
was a nice spot oh beautiful i've been back a couple times
since then and the stream's running it's actually
a really nice spot really nice uh when you look
out across the meadow and watch the sunrise
this is where we had that deer backbone or the deer
rib yeah that's right yeah yeah
that was the ribs yeah we did learn something about uh making things
with balsam firs don't sit on it fresh
because all this sap gets all over your clothing
in fact we're both wearing the same pants we
are both wearing the pants that we wore on the last
march trip to do this and i've got
also for a sap all over the butt of these pants my wife is not
impressed Washington State.
The moose tracks going up through the deep snow here.
I had a feeling there was moose back here again.
I saw them last spring, but they haven't been that many around.
So this is just a single moose walking through.
Pretty good sized track, so it's probably a bull.
where he came through also
and it got melt so
it's frozen now and it's pretty
defined.
I'm not sure
how well it'll
show up in the camera but look at the
hue of
blue spruce there
compared to the pine. The hue
of blue.
Blue hue. Don't need snowshoes
here. What are you talking about?
This is the
burn. We're in the lightning. I would say
two years ago lightning hit just this one
little island. Burnt all these trees up.
Are there still some remnants?
Yeah, we should be able to see all the new trunks.
Cool, let's go check it out after we get out of this snowdrift.
There's a theater outside
into actual wood.
Lightning, fire, the old mother down.
Alright, Shawn, you think that ax will split this wood?
Look at the grain on that bad boy.
Look at that, like a twist on a walking stick.
It has
a nice
homely
feeling
to it.
You know, like, you can go in there,
just get warm, basically, is the thing.
Ah!
Oh, man.
Oh, man.
I think
I saw a
negative
20-ish
sleeping
pad
tonight.
I stopped at MEC on the way up here, Mountain Equipment Co-op,
Canada's version of REI, as I've said many times.
And I stopped to see a buddy that works there,
but he talked me into this pillow.
So I've had the same pillow for quite some time.
It's worked out fine for me,
but it's losing its pillow-like features, so it's on to the next one.
This one seems pretty cool.
It's actually way smaller than my other one.
My other one was down, and it didn't roll up or pack down or anything.
It kind of just smushed like down does.
This one rolls up, and that one lost its filling,
and it was really kind of flat, so I guess I'm blowing this one up.
There's a little valve here for I think a pump,
but it didn't come with a pump unless I'm supposed to roll this bag up
No, I don't think so.
So we'll blow
into her see how it goes.
So it's like this soft
Fleecy kind of feel to it.
It's got a little contour and some bubbles some bubbles in there
And I'm sure I'll probably end
up doing this one of these
and letting some air out.
Thanks Brendan
Brendan's the friend that works at Mac
if you didn't catch on to that. Time to light the beacons
You can smell that
cedar like crazy.
Yeah, beautiful.
You know, somebody said,
when they saw me cutting log ends off, that I should have left
them on.
What you normally do is leave them
on until you need them for emergency firewood.
Oh yeah.
But, there's not going to be too many emergencies here for one thing.
No, but it's good.
It makes sense.
Yeah, it does, yeah.
It's really something cool to think of.
Yeah, if it was a wilderness cabin.
Right.
Because yeah, that would be like kiln dried almost, by the...
Yeah.
Plus three
on my thermometer,
but that was sitting on
the floor in there, away
from the wood stove,
so I'm going to hang it maybe over on the outhouse out there, on
the outhouse out there, and we'll see how cold she is.
My hands are pretty cold.
Oh, is it?
Yeah.
Well, that'll work too, right?
I forgot to put that in.
Derp-a-derp-derp.
It's just a big-ass outhouse.
Can't miss it.
It's pretty big, right?
Oh, man, I shouldn't be holding my tripod with no gloves.
This is cold.
It's sitting at almost negative 11 maybe,
negative 11 Celsius, so I guess I don't need
to hang mine.
I'll hang it in the cabin.
How about that?
That'll make sense, right?
Hang it in the cabin.
I'll hang it kind of near head height.
We'll see the temp.
Temp's is short for temperature.
Stick with me, boys and girls.
Gloves
on.
Look at my gear pile.
Sean's nice, clean cabin.
Everything's immaculate.
it's got all its own spots where it needs
to be and I got a gear pile making
himself at home this light I got a light
for the top of my camera as you can see
it seems to be working out pretty decent
be good for like watch go over on the
corner if I shut the light off I shut
the light off pretty big difference gets
all grainy right now my lens is getting
a little foggy too so you can take that
into consideration coming in and out
of the cabin with the wood wood stove going
That happens. I got these gloves for ice fishing tomorrow.
These ones aren't gonna cut it
It almost has like
a glass breaking sound
with the axe lovely
blends in very well
in my camera
He's sitting up eating something. Yeah
The fly
all
stacked
up inside
and out
fire gone
Sun just set sky was nice and purple and pink actually
very pink getting firewood and did not have our cameras
That's
really
nice,
dude
So I don't know how long that this thermometer has
been sitting up here, but I'd say about an hour or so
Let's check it out plus
11 or 12 Celsius, so that's pretty decent.
It's about a live negative 11
or 12 outside
It's probably dropped even more now a while when we looked
and it's that inside so nice and comfortable
They're gonna go out and sit
by the fire now cook up some steaks and bear ribs
It's Sean look at Sean over there. You see him shut this off
It was kind
of creepy just
watching him
work out there.
Put a base of ice
and significantly big logs down.
Sean's treating me
to some steak
tonight.
Those things look really good, dude.
Whole beef, actually.
Didn't plan on it.
Good price.
Five bucks a pound. Finished.
Grass-fed Dexter beef.
My favorite.
What is Dexter?
It's the species of smallest.
We raised them ourselves, actually.
So they're only like...
Like Great Dane size?
Yeah.
Really?
Yeah.
Huh.
Full-sized deer.
That's about 600 pounds live, actually.
We got the whole thing,
which means I'm eating beef every second, right?
220 pounds of lean meat in the freezer.
So that's the size of the T-bones.
You see that?
They're smaller.
Those are the bear ribs?
Spare ribs?
Spare ribs.
Spare, bear, bear ribs.
Bear, spare?
Spare.
Potatoes
are
looking
good.
We'll grab the last of the bear ribs off of him.
Hello, feast.
Okay, that hand's a little warm.
Handle's a little warm.
There's a lot of comments saying, how is he picking up the pan?
There's a little black handle.
Oh, I saw it. Is that it? Yeah, a little silicone
cover. Oh, look at those fancy pants.
The mystery is done.
Big ol'
plate
of ribs.
Minus 20.
Are outer layers up? Yeah,
they're lower than those.
is not grippy at all.
It's like anti-grippy.
It's like fun little skis
around the fire
when the fire melts.
You get the icy slope towards the fire.
The dangerous slope.
They are very warm though.
Right now mine aren't, but they will be in a second.
Do you like spinach?
Yeah. No, you do?
I seem surprised by that.
Martin, this is well done buddy.
I got you
one of those.
Check out the name on it.
It's true.
I'm not joking.
We are not going on a long dark voyage here.
It's a strange trip.
The
cabin
lights,
man.
Yeah.
So the
temperature
is dropping
more.
It's negative 15 outside.
And for some reason it's keeping up.
It's positive 15 on the inside.
When it was negative 11 outside, it was negative 11 inside.
negative 11 inside and now there's negative 15
outside positive 15 yeah obviously it's just
coincidence or whatever yeah it's funny it's funny it made me laugh
that's actually my last
video was minus 22 outside plus 22 inside right
at all yeah before i do that i wouldn't buy so much
wood just let it hit that that ratio on its own
call it good cheers yeah yeah yeah all right
Sean, what's
the temp over there 25 degrees
Celsius would you have known that
if the Fahrenheit wasn't put
on the conversion yeah all right
so sorry what
what 20 20 degrees 25 degrees Celsius pretty well 80 79
or 80 Fahrenheit okay
That's the coldest, literally this is the coldest part of the cabin.
It's the furthest from there.
Okay.
It's the north wall, it's the coldest.
Up there, I bet it's like 40 degrees.
Well, I have mine here,
which should be a little bit different, I assume.
I got just right at 20, I think.
Is that what that says?
Is that what it says to you?
Maybe, well, we're going to call it 20-ish.
Oh, it's right on it.
It is right on the...
With the kinking knife.
Oh, excuses, excuses.
anyways it's around 20 to 25 in here uh
and let's go outside to the outhouse
outside to the outhouse oh sean
and then we'll this one's saying 28 over here 28
oh my gosh it's warm it's toasty all right ****
the thing don't let sean to get mad at me for
for letting all the the warm air out we're
not light we're not warming up the outside
my mom used to say okay i can't really see
because this light is so bright in my in my
eyes so i'm gonna turn it around outside
we got negative 15 right on the dot
and that it says it's
what like two or three degrees fahrenheit something like
that so my day all right let's go
Let's go back.
My little booties.
Put my little booties on.
Poor
handle.
Little Dick Perenike style.
Uh,
negative 15.
Yeah.
And that's only like 2 or 3 degrees Fahrenheit,
which doesn't sound very cold to me.
I know.
The rope that I have on the sled is not bigger distance height.
So, it's just paracord on it.
It's not wide enough and it's not long enough.
This is some old school rope I've had for years.
Got it from Canadian Tire probably.
I had this before Will and I went on our first Algonquin trip,
so that was like 15 years
or something anyways bigger thicker rope maybe 20 feet long maybe
a little bit long but i can always
bunch it up cut it a little bit
because the ends were all frayed i'm just going to burn it up it
burns just like paracord most ropes do melts at the end solidifies
so it doesn't fray anymore
it's easier to get through things too
so on my sled i'll have to make the holes bigger i made
my own holes uh paracord through but get this through
but that's all right the idea of having
the longer um rope is it helps going up
and down uh hills is there many hills you think shall we
go it would be steady downhill nothing i don't know
so i'm way out then yeah perfect you can
push them so anyways make it a little bit easier
on myself uses my sleds outside so i'm not going
to bother put it on uh today
but i'll look definitely uh in the next video show you how
i'm doing that and what i'm doing
so i'm going to split it up into two videos if i haven't already
said that today i'm going to end
this video tonight i'm going to go to bed and then tomorrow
will be the ice fishing video and the camping video
and stuff i'm not i'm not really 100 sure
what order i'm going to upload them in either
so it's a whole mystery stay tuned just for the
mystery you heard it here folks yeah that heat
is pumping out of there yeah i guess it is worth
I like it yeah put that screen
on there you don't need to you got all that rock
in front yeah it's not gonna pop out
that far I know that's a very good yeah
fine i'm like
your thing on
fire anyway
fire fights
kids stick
with us kids
alright we're gonna turn in here soon so whoa
turn soon it's almost 11 o'clock
but I got to go up upstairs and see Sean's
Sean's quarters
No, he's not up there
Oh, pass him
See Sean's quarters
Come on, Sean
Oh, this looks a little bit nicer than what I got downstairs
I am appreciative of the bed you made for me
Don't let it sound like I'm
Oh, wow
Yeah, this is alright
It's quite warm up here, Sean
It's like unbearably warm, actually
Yeah, it actually is
I definitely need a window up there
So, I'm going to shut this off so you can see the whole effect
Look at that, the lights and the deer antlers
It's too hot up here
You're not going to be able to sleep up here
This is unbearable
Oh my goodness
Very cool
Not literally
What
is that
90
Alright guys I think that's where we're going to end the video
For this one for me
Yeah it was a cool time
Cool day out here in the one man's
Log cabin in the forest
The Canadian wilderness
Yeah no
good times and tomorrow will be a good day too we'll go
and we'll ice fish like we said so we'll
start off early in the morning head out uh find
a suitable spot to camp we'll set up that tent
we'll get some uh ice fishing done auger
a hole manually, hopefully catch some fishies
cold weather so a bit of a challenge just to fight the weather off
yeah so that'll be good lots
of fun uh sean has promised fish
Thanks for watching this video guys. I appreciate it.
Like I said earlier check Sean's videos out,
check his channel out, my self-reliance
Be sure to tune in for the video that we're going to shoot tomorrow.
It'll probably be up in about a week
I believe again, I don't really know which order I'm gonna set them up
in so maybe that's all I'm gonna avoid but watch both videos
That's yeah, that's a cool day tomorrow. Actually, this was cool,
but tomorrow will be I think maybe a little bit more cool
Yeah, I'll be more of a camping kind of thing, outdoor adventuring.
Yeah, I haven't done that this year yet. Yeah for me
I'm looking forward to it. I'm sure we're gonna get on some fish.
So yeah, your your time's all been wrapped up in this
Hey, yeah, yeah, so yeah, it'd be cool to go.
All right guys. Thanks a lot
