The 2026 US midterm elections are shaping up to be a high-stakes battle for control of Congress, with record-setting political spending, major campaign promises and growing concerns over election security dominating the race.

Elon Musk has emerged as the biggest known donor of the election cycle, contributing approximately $366 million to federal political committees, including more than $276 million since July to support Republican efforts to retain control of Congress. His donations include $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund and substantial contributions to America PAC. The scale of his spending has intensified debate over the influence of billionaire wealth in American politics.

President Donald Trump has also made a headline-grabbing promise, pledging a $5,000 dividend for every adult American citizen if Republicans win both the House and Senate.

However, the proposal has no detailed implementation or funding plan publicly established, and analysts have questioned its cost, legality and feasibility. The estimated price tag could reach approximately $1.35 trillion, making congressional approval and funding central questions.
