We're getting new details tonight on that hazmat scare at the state
capitol last night that forced evacuations at the executive tower.
It started when a staffer opened an envelope filled with white powder.
And that prompted a huge response from police and first responders.
Today, Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes
is speaking out about all this.
Fox and Taylor Wertz joining us now with more. Taylor.
Mark and Christina, Secretary Fontes says he wants people
in Arizona to know that his office is trained
for things like this so as not to cause any disruption.
to the voters of Arizona.
Here's what the scene looked like last night
when we first got here around five o'clock.
Secretary Fontes says that his office
recently increased security ahead of the midterms,
but no one expected something like this.
Around 3:30 yesterday afternoon,
a staff member opened an envelope
that wasn't addressed to anyone specific
other than the office.
Fontes says his office is trained for things like this.
So following protocol, authorities cleared the floor,
got hazmat on site, isolated that staffer
and one other exposed employee, and locked down the area.
Initial DPS testing revealed the powder was not hazardous,
so no one has to quarantine any longer.
While it's still unclear exactly what the substance was,
Secretary Fontes has a strong message for whoever sent it.
But when you're threatening staff,
when you're threatening elections officials,
the people who are actually working to ensure that every American,
regardless of their party, can get their vote,
that's not political anymore.
That's an act against our democracy.
And in my view, that's what has to absolutely stop.
American politics has always been rough and tumble.
Candidates are rough with each other
sometimes. The folks who are just clerks like
the one in my office opening the mail,
they should never have to work in fear.
The FBI tells Fox 10 it is looking into
who could have sent that envelope
and whether it's connected to similar incidents that happened
across the country this week.
Live at the state capitol, Taylor Wertz, Fox 10 News.
