Sally Rooney's books have sold millions of copies worldwide.
Some of them, such as Normal People,
have even been adapted for the small screen.
But her publisher said Wednesday it had decided,
with Rooney's agreement,
to halt sales of her work in the U.K. in any format,
but adding that it would continue to sell her books elsewhere.
The publisher said in a statement,
current legislation in the U.K. has led to circumstances
where Faber could not pass on U.K. earnings
to Sally Rooney for her work.
I oppose genocide. Support Palestine Action.
The move relates to Rooney's pledged financial support
of a pro-Palestinian group in the UK
called Palestine Action.
The group has targeted defense companies linked to Israel,
and the British government designated
the group a terrorist organization
following a break-in at an airbase last year.
That designation makes it a crime to be a member
or to support the group.
In a statement, Rooney said,
I have made every effort to be honest with the public about my beliefs
and intentions, and I am wholly prepared to accept the consequences.
More than 3,500 people have been arrested
for supporting Palestine Action since July of last year.
The group's co-founder has challenged the terrorist designation
in court, and the Supreme Court is due to hear an appeal next month.
