Paco Gómez - Photographs.

Paco Gómez (1918–1998) was a Spanish photographer whose work bridged documentary practice, architectural photography, and artistic experimentation. After moving from Pamplona to Madrid in the late 1940s, he became a founding member of La Palangana, a collective that rejected pictorialist conventions in favour of direct realism. This group laid the groundwork for the Afal movement, which defined post-war Spanish photography and opened new spaces for critical, documentary approaches in a tightly controlled cultural climate.

From the early 1950s Gómez collaborated extensively with the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid (COAM), producing a vast archive of architectural and urban images. Published in Arquitectura magazine and other outlets, his photographs documented Spain’s modernist buildings, urban expansion, and peripheral landscapes during the Franco years. His work balanced technical precision with an unembellished documentary clarity, positioning him as one of the most significant visual chroniclers of Spain’s mid-twentieth-century built environment.

Alongside his architectural output, Gómez pursued a personal practice attentive to marginal spaces, vacant lots, and transitional urban zones. His images reflected affinities with the German Fotoform group, particularly in their attention to abstraction and form within documentary contexts. Though not widely known during his lifetime, his archive has since been preserved and studied through the Fundación Foto Colectania, where it is recognised as a crucial contribution to Spain’s photographic heritage and the broader history of European post-war photography.
