Chinese navy ship brings free care and medicines to Abidjan
Oct 16, 2026
A Chinese medical ship arrived at the port
of Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire on Thursday to offer
free medical consultations and medicines to local residents.
Beyond the humanitarian work,
the Chinese mission serves as a framework
for sharing experiences with the Ivorian Navy.
I heard that there was a Chinese medical consultation ship here,
so I took the opportunity to come in for some checkups.
I have to admit I was impressed by
the warm welcome
and above all the quality of the care.
They told me I have a cataract
but my blood pressure is too high so I cannot have the
surgery.
I have to go back to town to see my regular doctor
to get this done because they don't
have enough time and my blood pressure is high
so they cannot schedule me for the surgery.
Well known in the field of trade in Africa
and especially in the Gulf of Guinea, China
is entering the humanitarian sector as well
in an area previously dominated by Western
countries.
China also sends medical missions
to several African countries every year.
The initiative being carried out here is part
of what is known as naval diplomacy, primarily
aimed at raising awareness
of the Chinese Navy among African populations, especially
in the Gulf of Guinea.
It's not just military ships that can dock here.
Medical consultations will continue through October 21, 2026.
