🎸 My Metal Roots - Kiss: Born in Thailand, raised in Germany (thanks to my dad's military service), my journey into metal began when my brother introduced me to Kiss. I was initially skeptical about these face-painted older men until I heard their iconic 1974 track, "Deuce." It blew my mind and set the stage for my love of metal.
🎩 ZZ Top: A Blend of Blues and Rock: Transitioning from rock to metal, ZZ Top entered my life with their iconic 1983 hit, "Legs." Hailing from Houston, Texas, ZZ Top's unique blend of blues and rock struck a chord with me. The song's infectious rhythm, combined with the distinct sound of their guitars, forever changed my musical preferences.
🕶️ Dusty Hill's Legacy: As we celebrate ZZ Top's influence on my musical journey, it's essential to remember Dusty Hill, who sadly passed away in 2021. His contributions to the band and the world of music left an indelible mark.
🤘 Metal Evolution: From Sabbath to Metallica: After ZZ Top, my exploration of metal expanded to include legends like Black Sabbath and Metallica. These bands shaped my evolving taste in metal, setting the stage for a diverse and exciting musical journey.
🌌 Future Deep Dive: Night Wish and More: Stay tuned for future videos where I'll delve into my growing appreciation for bands like Night Wish and explore the vast landscapes of K-metal and J-metal. The metal journey is a constant evolution, and I'm thrilled to share it with you!

Patty shares her personal history and the musical journey that led her to discover and love heavy metal. From her childhood in Thailand and Germany to her life in the U.S., she discusses the specific bands and songs that shaped her taste, moving away from mainstream pop toward the defiance and unique sounds of rock and metal.
Hi guys, it's Patty. How are you? I hope 2024 is great for you so far.
It's seven days in and hope everybody's
doing well. It's a little cold here.
This video is a little bit different. I wanted to share a
little bit of myself and a little of the journey
of how I eventually became to listen to metal
music um a little history about me born originally
in Thailand um I am a mixed uh I guess
mixed ethnic person for to be exact um adopted
my dad's uh retired military I've lived in uh Germany
uh for for a while while he was stationed there
by the way uh he was stationed in Zweibrücken and
And he's, you know, the base is not there anymore.
Then we went to Frankfurt and then eventually,
you know, we came to the U.S.
But there is two groups that helped me with this journey.
The first one, I remember my brother,
you know, bringing in a album and it was Kiss.
You know, he's walking in with his album and, you know,
I was like, OK, this is the weirdest thing ever.
why are these you know older men have you know
um paint on their uh you know on their face and
this is ridiculous i can't believe you
do that anyways he put the um album you know on you know
back then they had like large albums you know not cds
or digital anything like that and i fell
for it i could not believe that this was great music keep
in mind that i am you know from thailand
you know i didn't really listen to anything
and then when i was in germany i was still like a
young kid so you know i didn't know what music
was so this was great for me i was like okay
what's that you know near near near you know i i remember asking
my brother that he's like well
that's the guitar and you know this is the drumming
and you know and stuff like that
so i fell in love with Kiss okay um if you don't know
who Kiss is they're an amazing freaking iconic
band um you know originally they formed in 1973
so you have Paul you have Gene you have Ace and then
uh then you have Peter those were the original um Kiss members
and the song that i truly truly
liked was Deuce believe it or not um that is a freaking great song
and you know what everybody
wants to play or you know cover that song
which is ridiculously amazing so um it came out in 1974
four um but obviously you know by then i was only four
and i was still you know in Thailand
so um you know i discovered them later in this song
so this song was kind of cool because i did
not know that um uh Lenny Kravitz um actually you know covered it too
and uh i checked out that and
i have to say he did a darn good uh job regarding
that um you know Kiss was so different from me
because i felt like you know i was lost
and you know i can live vicariously through them
you know so you have these guys with like you know the white paint face
and you got you know
the star it was just like crazy
so i fell in love with uh with Kiss and the next uh group
that i was introduced to you know even
though this is like you know rock rock and roll i eventually
you know you know move over into metal
was ZZ Top now you're telling me they are so iconic and of
course Legs Legs originally came out in 1983 i love
the song you know how the video starts all
you see is these beautiful gorgeous girls legs three members with beard
and glasses i'm like
this is it i am in heaven i love i love them i
still listen to them you know and uh gosh uh we
also have to remember uh Dusty Hill he passed away in 2021
but uh yeah they were formed ZZ Top
uh was formed in 1969 in Houston Texas
by the way my dad is from Houston Texas
ooh um you know they have a different blend it's a little bit of blues
and rock and you know it
gets boogie it's just a different sound
and they all play this unique guitar i saw i have to bring
this up i saw that um Elwood Francis he played
a gigantic 17 string bass okay i'm going to describe
it to you okay by the way it's huge 17 strings it's yellow
and that's uh that's phenomenal if
you don't know who he is you uh you should look look him up okay
but Legs changed me i couldn't
listen to pop i couldn't listen to you know hip-hop
but you know ZZ Top gave me that uniqueness
of the sound of the rock and roll a little blend of you know uh jazz
and blues amazing amazing
amazing you know um when I you know
when I found um ZZ Top I would go home and I could not wait
I think it was uh MTV and what's I forgot the other show uh
but I could not wait to um see
ZZ Top every day because you knew you knew like I left you know
for school at like I think seven
o'clock and I knew by the time it came back
because you know all they do is just kept you
know playing the same video I knew ZZ Top it
was either going to come like after like Twisted
Sisters by the way that's another um great band love them
or um Van Halen you know when you see
those two you know ZZ Top legs was coming you know up
and you know that song changed me drastically
and you know I didn't want to play it I think I
do have it yeah I I have it prompt I'm gonna
actually
play it
here we go
I love the
song check
this out
but you
know it was
back then
you had
big hair and you know everybody was listening to you know like Madonna
and I was really not into
that i knew that zz top had such a um you know unique uh
a sound and um i just i just really
fell in love with you know Billy Gibbons
and and and Frank um and by the way Legs topped the chart
okay it was crazy it was like everywhere everywhere
that you turn you know everybody
was always playing uh this song um i think it hit number eight
in the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S.
and they did a dance mix and i think it was like number 13
and um yeah they i think yeah they won
the MTV Video Music Awards for like best group
so that song right there was was the thing
for me between you know them
and uh you know Kiss although in my high school you know I would play
them constantly and um you know I think
that you know it kind of drew me towards like heavy metal
uh instead of like you know you know Madonna I'm
not saying Madonna was bad because at the time
everybody you know she was like so popular okay
but I was really not into that I was really into
you know the guitar the you know uh the bad you know
with the with the the leather and just
you know like the defiance
and um but it's great it's not a bad defiance and um you know till this
day i you know i i love ZZ Top it's on on my Spotify
and uh you know in 2021 you know when
Dusty passed I was like really you know I cried
I you know I couldn't believe that because you
know he was like you know one you know an iconic person
that you grew up to that you love and you
listen to and then he you know
and then he passed away it was like you know I'm getting teary eyes
it's like heartbreaking you know what I mean
because you know it they influenced me so much
of what i listened today and just seeing
a great artist like that just pass away was just like oh
my gosh you know please don't take
the other two away please stay healthy you guys but yeah and
then you know after i listened to them i you know i listened
a little bit of uh Black Sabbath and
then of course Metallica
and then eventually i think the next video i'm gonna talk about you
those two where i eventually you know uh spurred out
to different countries of um you know my
metal journey and you know my metal journey
is still you know evolving you know i'm still
learning you know more about Nightwish uh by the way
which uh you know when i do deep dive and then
of course uh you know all the other K-metal
and and J-metal um so i'm really excited about this
so it's like something different
and i hope you like it um you know this is just me you know uh
just sitting here um you know talking about you know
the passion that i love and i know y'all love
um you know metal too so do me a favor if you like
