Its unfortunately obvious...
Oct 15, 2026
Unfortunately, it's just obvious now.
Look, we didn't want it to have to come to this,
but at this point, you have to ask a
serious question about the Habs goaltending.
It has not been the start to the year that Jakub Dobesh won.
Then look, Montreal managed to get him some goal support.
Josh Anderson has been the Habs' best player over
the last stretch of games.
Nick Suzuki coming up clutch.
Lane Hudson doing lane train things, just like he always does.
But when it's not enough to get four goals in regulation,
to have some questionable penalty
calls, to just not being able to execute on the special teams
when you need to, and to
still have four goals in the game and to not get the win,
it does hurt a little bit.
Look, I think there are some overreactions out there to Jakub Dobesz.
I still think we obviously have to think back
and remember what he did in the playoffs.
But I also don't think it's ridiculous for fans
to be at least mildly concerned and the
numbers actually back it up we're going to dive
into everything that happened and let's just start
with the game scorecards we'll get into Dobesh in just a bit
but i have to shout out Josh Anderson
if you liked Josh Anderson's game time
and you want him extended leave a like on this video we'd
love to hit i don't know i know there's not going
to be as many people watching this one after a
loss 500 if we can hit 500 likes i'd be thrilled thank you
so much Josh Anderson though i mean i
kind of want to extend him right now this dude's
on pace for some ridiculous numbers I mean I know
six points in seven games is like you can't really extrapolate
that out over the whole season but
after his game tonight here were stats coming
in to the game two goals to assist with four points
in six games now he's up to four goals
and two assists after his two goal performance tonight
four goals to assist six points in seven games for Josh Anderson
and I love this right I do love this
but part of me thinks that this is a problem,
and let me know down below if you disagree with
me right now, but I feel like I shouldn't be looking at box scores
and seeing Noah Dobson
leading the team in shots
and Josh Anderson leading the team in goals. Again, I don't think
it's a bad thing, and the depth is good,
but I'm still waiting for the top guys, not named Lane
Hudson or Nick Suzuki, to kick it up another notch.
Caulfield has been hit or miss so far
this season. I think he's still creating good chances,
and Montreal in general is creating a
lot of good chances Yuri Slavkovsky has had
his moments tonight was not one of his better games
last game was it is what it
is and of course without Ivan Dmitrov without Oliver Kapanen who
again I think we sometimes forget has
been a top six player for a large chunk of his time in
Montreal not to mention being without Mike Matheson
and there is a lot going on right there are a lot
of injuries this is the second night
of a back-to-back you take what you can get but it was
also the second night of a back-to-back for Washington
so you needed your top guys to show
up your top level guys can they get points can
they produce can they put you over the top alex
Tuch showed up for Washington Hudson
and Suzuki did for Montreal but what about the others well
Ghuli to be fair to him of course coming back
from an injury it is what it is Jack Edermus
was a great deep pairing Hudson Dobson absolutely
dominant Ghuli Carrier on the other hand got
dominated in this game and i'll just bring back this game score card
and that just proves it not
even close the worst defensive pairing in this game
by a mile um but again i i can't really hold
that against Ghuli coming back from injury fine
but you still need to do a bit of a better job
clearing out the front of the net if you ask me
but if we take a look at the forward lines
this is where i'm starting to have
an issue right like now Slavkovsky Suzuki Comfield which has been
our best line for years they're getting matched
up against other top lines and we're seeing this
happened again where Washington is able to sort
of not always of course you still generate chances
but sort of neutralize these guys at 5-5
and then you got to have the depth show up and to be fair
tonight they did Texier Denault Boulouk my goodness
that French-speaking line is so freaking good
they are so good at controlling the puck
in the offensive zone being aggressive making smart
defensive plays Alex Texier has looked
so skilled this season I don't know if anyone else is feeling
that, but when the puck is on his stick,
I'm trusting him to make the right play a lot,
he's dangling around defenders,
Phil Denault is incredibly responsible, Zach Boulouk now
up to 5 points in 7 games,
how can you not like what they've been doing, Kratunuk
Anderson, some great plays between Newhook and Anderson,
getting him 2 goals, the Beck
Evans Doc line, you know, not as much usage,
of course, but, you know, they were fine,
I thought that, you know, they did control
some high danger chances, Beck had some good
chances, Charlie Lindgren was actually really good
in net for Washington, and I did before
i get to the whole goaltending situation um just wanted
to show you this most career assists by a
player through 86 nhl road games in nhl history i just thought
this list was ridiculous so just
wanted to show you that but the obvious story
of tonight is simply Jakub Dobesh, is it obvious
i think it is, i think it's safe to say Jacob Fowler gets
the next game, Jakub Dobesh, i don't
have his exact stats after this game
but it's around an .850 save percentage, i do have the
advanced metrics though they don't paint
a nice picture, Jacob Fowler on the other hand is rocking
a 1.91 GAA, three games started, four games played
um .908 save percentage, two wins, one OT loss, uh
he's actually, sorry, three games played, three
games started, i thought i saw somewhere else
he had four, i would have, it doesn't matter, 59 saves, he's
been so good, i have to ask you guys
a question, is he your number one yet? i don't want to overreact, right
and i think it's hard not to
after a game like that after a sustained stretch
of play from Jakub Dobesh, the thing is Dobesh has
been at his best when he has gotten game after
game after game after game gotten to a rhythm
then he settles in, and that's when Jakub Dobesh is at his best
when he has been historically at his
worst I don't have the numbers to back this up
but it certainly feels like it when Jakub Dobesh
has been at his worst, it's typically
been when he's fighting for his position with other goalies
and he can't get into a rhythm
on the other hand, Jacob Fowler can just step in whenever, play a
great game and then earn the spot back, Dobesh has done
that in the past but it's kind of more
Fowler's thing, so i ask you again, type
Y for yes if you think Fowler is now sort of I don't know
like de facto the number one
or no, if you still think it's Dobesh for now, because i totally
understand if you think that and I kind of think
that myself still I think the confidence in the
team is still going to be in Jakub Dobesh
especially after what he did in the playoffs
you've given the benefit of the doubt
but another nearly negative two goals saved above expected is
not going to help your case
and coming into this game Jakub Dobes ranked sixth worst in the NHL
for total uh goals saved above expected coming into the minus four
and after his performance
Tonight, he jumps all the way down
and jumps over Darcy Kemper for third worst in the NHL
behind only Dustin Wolf
and Kevin Lankinen with a similar rate stat because he would
have four games, same as Wolf, same as Kemper,
that Devon Cooley's pretty rough there.
I don't know what's going on in Calgary.
And then Lankinen is Lankinen.
I don't know what's going on there in Vancouver.
Well, I do know, but it's rough.
The thing is, too, like, you can say, oh,
well, some of the goals weren't his fault.
Yeah, sure.
I mean, that last one, I think, was there
was one that was tipped right in front of
him.
and like there's not much you can do there
but in general when you're out high danger
chancing the other team 13 to 2 you had 13 to 2
were the high danger chances this is also a
Charlie Lindgren stat sort of it's not just a a hab stat
and a Lindgren stat too because he was
phenomenal in net for Washington
and 5v5 Montreal absolutely dominated the play uh in terms of high
danger chances the special teams today were bad
the first two penalty kills both led to goals i'm
still not I actually should double check
if that first one by Cairo was technically a power play
goal or not because I'm pretty sure I saw
on the screen that it was even strength when he scored
but either way it doesn't matter it was essentially a power play goal
because we didn't have like full
strength on the on the ice
so really two power play goals given up right away our power play
couldn't really get it going without Ivan Dmitrov it's
a little bit tough and then Jakub Dobesh like
just can't make the saves when they matter I think I think
that's what's irking me a bit because a
few of these were like you should save
those because they're kind of straight on like that
last shot from Justin Hall I know there's bodies in front of him
and it tipped up high I think off
Evan's stick but it sucks that it sneaks past your arm
and there's still a gap there I don't know
look I've never played goalie I'm not going
to pretend to to you know tell him oh you need to
do this with your technique
because that just makes me look stupid but you know like I don't
think it's ridiculous to say that I think Jacob
Fowler should get the next start and then I'm a
little bit disappointed with the start of the season
of Jakub Dobesz and I think you guys would
probably agree and if you do let me know if you don't hey
also let me know we love all the
interaction that will do it for this episode
though thank you so much for tuning in every
single day even on days like this by the way
if you made it nine minutes into a post-game video
where we lose on a Wednesday night I think we've earned
your subscription we're on the road to 30k
we have 78 days left we want to do it by the end of the year
so if you want to help us out with
that goal it'd be really appreciated I'm your host Josh Goss
and I will catch you all for the next one
