Great California Shakeout earthquake drill

Today is the Great Shakeout, an annual statewide campaign reminding all of us to be prepared in case the next big earthquake hits. KTVU's James Torres, live in Hayward, where local leaders are about to talk emergency preparedness. Good morning, James. Yeah, good morning, Pam. What you hear today won't be any different than what you've ever heard before when it comes to getting ready for that next big earthquake, but local emergency officials say that doesn't make their message any less important. Today is the Great Shakeout, which also includes the Great Shakeout Drill. More than a million people throughout the state of California will take part, and that means fairs, demonstrations, resources offered by the state's Office of Emergency Services. Locally, reps here will encourage you to sign up for AC alerts if you live in Alameda County to stay on top of emergency notifications. Then, later this morning, around 10-15, your phones will sound off, signaling to you that the Great Shakeout drill is getting underway. That's your chance to practice what to do in the event of a major emergency. We'll hear from local leaders here at Hayward City Hall coming up in just a few minutes talking about the annual Great Shakeout and some of the best practices that you should keep in mind in the event of the next big earthquake. For now, we are live this morning in Hayward. I'm James Torres, KTVU, Fox 2 News.
