Former local government official sues municipality she was terminated from
Oct 15, 2026
A former official from a small community outside of Fredericton
is now suing the municipality and several former council members.
Marjorie Turner served as Chief Administrative Officer,
Clerk and Treasurer for Sunbury York South
from September 2022 to June 2025 when she was terminated.
At the time of her termination,
Turner was charged with violating the Local Government Act
for failing to provide documents
to members of the public for examination.
Those charges were dropped in early August.
Now, she's launched a lawsuit against the municipality
and five former officials.
None of the claims made by Turner have been tested in court.
All the defendants have jointly filed
an intent to defend notice with the court.
In her statement of claim, Turner alleges
that the named councillors harassed her privately and publicly.
She alleges that one violated labor laws
while another used her as a scapegoat to advance his political career.
She claimed that another former councillor brought forward
a motion alleging she misappropriated funds.
Accusations, she claims,
undermined her professional reputation and credibility.
She claims that Larry DeLong,
who was acting mayor at the time of Turner's termination,
circulated allegations that the plaintiff was misleading council
and should be dismissed for cause.
She also claims former mayor David Hayward
was constantly ignoring the plaintiff,
questioning her every move
and holding meetings without her contrary to the Local Government Act
to the point where she was obliged to take medical leave
for the severe anxiety panic attacks and
stress caused by the harassment in her statement Turner says
that the stress caused her to go on
workplace related medical leave
and that she's been getting benefits from WorkSafeNB
she also claims that her termination was without cause
the municipality did not respond to a
request for comment and Turner's lawyer declined to comment.
No court date has been scheduled.
