🎬 ABOUT THE COMIC 🎬
In the early days of motion pictures, slapstick vaudeville comic Billy Bright (Dick Van Dyke) is a silent screen favorite -- on a par with the Chaplins, Keatons, Lloyds and Langdons -- with the lovely Mary Gibson (Michele Lee) as his leading lady, and Cockeye (Mickey Rooney), his constant comedic associate. After wooing Mary away from their director, Frank Powers (Cornel Wilde), Billy uses their wedding as a comedy sequence in the first film to be made by his own, newly-formed company. Yet, as Mary soon discovers when his name surfaces in a divorce filed by a Hollywood financier, Billy is having an affair with another leading lady.
On the opening night of his first triumphant, full-length feature, Forget Me Not, Mary leaves Billy to wed her former boyfriend, Powers. Driven to drinking heavily, Billy's work suffers and he finds himself washed-up once “the talkies” arrive.
Years later, after reminiscing about the old days of comedy on Steve Allen's television show, Billy talks himself into a job -- doing detergent commercials. But, now old, lonely, and virtually forgotten, he spends his waning days living in a rented room where he watches his favorite Billy Bright comedy, Forget Me Not, on television.
